This remembrance day, may 4th, we are proud to present the Jewish storyteller Raphael Rodan. Rooted Storytelling Workshop - Drawing powerful inspiration from our origins. In some fairy tales, they will tell you about a chest of gold that is buried under a tree. What is the secret of this image? If you imagine the storyteller as a tree, you will realise how important his/her roots are to the process of finding stories to tell. They hide knowledge and secrets more precious than gold. For us it raises the question: how can we draw inspiration from our roots and our origins? In this workshop, we will examine this question. Raphael will guide participants through a gentle process, in which they are encouraged to playfully dig under the tree and discover a chest full of meaningful stories. Me and Mr. Jansen - An engaging solo storytelling show that invites the audience to venture beyond concepts such as “right” and “wrong”. It all started when the storyteller stumbled upon a black and white picture of a razzia in 1943. In the image, he recognised his current home in the centre of Amsterdam. An older couple was being pulled out of the building by men in white coats, officers of the SS. What must a storyteller do when faced with such a story? He peels the layers off the past, waking up sleeping ghosts, like the Dutch barber who used to live on the ground floor, Mr. Jansen. The big hit of The Amsterdam Storytelling Festival of 2022 returns! The Shushiki band then performed outside of Armenia, for the first time in the band’s history. With their wonderful tones and golden throats they immediately conquered the hearts of the festival audience. Of course there needs to be a follow up. That is why festival director Raphael Rodan travelled to Armenia, to create a musical storytelling with Tamara Atensyian, Meri and Nare Kartashyan. SHADES OF A MOUNTAIN Have you ever watched a mountain from afar? A mountain you desired to climb? To breathe the air from its peak. To watch the view that spreads underneath its wings. Yet standing under it, you asked yourself whether it’s possible. Perhaps It’s just too high… always there just outside of your reach. Winking at you from above. Many of the Armenian songs express a longing such as this. In their stories it would be the mountain of Ararat that is for laying across the border out of their reach. But what if it’s just a metaphor expressing a longing of a heart that is seeking to be whole? One of the things I love about my work is getting to see things I normally would not know about. I was blown away by yesterdays performance during the opening of Storytelling Festival (there are 4 more days! @storytellingfestival). Three recent gruaduates from Mezrab Storytelling School did a piece around their own experiences. Stories you'd normally only tell your best friend one night. But this night they shared them in a full theater weaved together by songs. The last song actually contained a story my spiritual teacher always uses. How a pearl comes into existence starting of as a grain of sand or parasite irrititating the oyster. The best way to close off and frame two tragic powerfully told stories (@betalozay + @naomi24houston). Beautifully sung by @eriksjoholmofficial (directed by one of the two festival bosses @raphaelrodan) Sadly enough there are no plans yet to play this piece again..
