🔵T. is from Afghanistan. He came to Greece unaccompanied and a minor. He has never lived in Afghanistan since his parents were also refugees in Iran when the Taliban started the war. In Iran, as an Afghan, he had no legal documents, no right to go to school, not even a sim card in his name. In Iran, he had been racially attacked as a child, because he is from Afghanistan. Of course his parents had no rights either. As he was in danger, he left for Europe even though he was only 15 years old. In Greece, he came to KYKLOS, learned Greek, found friends, networked and socialized. Through social services, he arranged for the necessary documents for his life here. He joined the community and slowly became a teacher for the new students. He was in charge for mens language course. Although his students are older than him, through teaching, he has earned their respect. He remembers one day he was on the bus and met one of his students. His student got up from the chair and said "sit down teacher". T. didn't believe it, as he said "I felt like I'm somebody now". Through the vocational rehabilitation program he found a job and was able to live independently when he became an adult. In addition, through the housing program he found a home together with two other friends. At KYKLOS, he also learned to make soaps and cook. He made a life of his own. After 5 years he decided to set a new beginning in another European country but he could not make roots there, so he returned to Greece where he felt confident with the way of life, is not afraid and can stand on his own feet. We in fact also had the pleasure of meeting Farhad, a refugee, who came from Athens to participate in the Job Fair! More than 450 refugees and asylum seekers, along with almost 30 employers from all over Greece, participated in the job finding event - Job Fair organized on the island on February 27 and 28. This is the fourth employment event organized in Lesvos, with an increasing participation each time. Employers, who participated either physically or online, showed keen interest in conducting interviews with candidates, discussing with them the available jobs in various sectors, from tourism, catering and construction to agriculture, recycling and technology. Excellent energy and a great collaboration- well done once again to all that helped realise this! Empowering Trainers to Address Mental Health: GESSI Development and Humanitarian Initiative's Training of Trainers Event On Monday, February 6, 2024, a ray of light cut through the darkness of mental health stigma when GESSI Development and Humanitarian Initiative held an inspirational training session for its volunteer refugee aid workers. Led by Psychosocial Officer Assoua Esumuh Herget, the session empowered attendees with in-depth knowledge on depression to pass on to displaced communities. Discussing depression's intricate nature, demographics affected, symptoms, causes and treatment, the event was a compelling call to action. Equipped to detect signs early and provide support, GESSI's impassioned volunteers are now primed to uplift refugees worldwide struggling with mental health issues. By promoting understanding and resilience, GESSI is leading the charge to de-stigmatize depression and build more compassionate societies. Their training event sparked a flame amongst attendees to drive positive change through mental health advocacy. We started 2024 with the interjection of new energy into our all-women team here in Athens at #thepomegranateproject with the hire of Mariangela Psyrraki. ❤️ Mariangela has been active in the social work front lines ever since 2006, whether employed or in a volunteer/solidarity capacity. Mariangela brings with her 15 solid years of social work experience where in the last ten years, she has been working with migrants and refugees, a field she is immensely passionate about, either on the frontline or on the research side. She has worked with Medicines San Frontiers, Emantes and EKKA Mariangela shares AFW's values that we always prioritise quality over quantity and believe strongly that true empowerment comes through a holistic, interdisciplinary, participatory and anti-oppressive approach, and if her practice does not align with these values, it's not social work. Mariangela graduated with a degree in social work from the Higher Technological Institute of Patras in 2006 and received her master's degree in social work at the University of Nottingham in 2009. Tragedy once again strikes lesvos. Yesterday, in a force 9 gale, an overloaded boat crashed into the rocks at palios in lesvos. 57 people were taken to Mavrobouni temporary camp. 2 bodies were recovered, and one person is still missing. We are informed that the dead and missing are from Sudan. To send people by sea in such conditions is murder. There are no safe routes for people to flee. In September 2020, the refugee camp of Moria burnt down. While people on the move had to flee in a hurry, they found temporary accommodation along the road under the Kara Tepe refugee camp just outside Mytiline. The days that followed the Greek government opened up another camp (Mavrovouni) to accommodate those from Moria but eventually those from Kara Tepe as well. It's our greatest joy to be able to spread the love to so many kids over the holidays. Even while most of the team are rejuvanating to tackle 2024 with new vigour to support women fleeing violence and persecution, the Pomegranate Project never fully shuts down. We continue being available for any emergencies at our shelter or requests coming through our hotline. We strike a balance during this down time by making our annual trip to the Acropolis. The impressive Parthenon is visible from where our Project is located. Life here in the city of Athens can be chaotic, messy and overwhelming. It is easy to lose yourself in the grind of balancing children, learning Greek and finding stable work. Visiting the Acropolis with a new batch of residents this year was just as rewarding as last year, as we all enjoyed themselves, ending our trip at a very traditional Greek taverna. Integration is not just through Greek classes but through positive experiences. Here at #thepomegranateproject, our holistic model of protection and empowerment services aim to support women who are fleeing violence, conflict and persecution to recover, reinforce their resilience for reintegration into society. The camp is full of so many vulnerable people. This chair belongs to a boy aged 10 . He is fast to smile, a smile that lights up his face and the room around him. Those caring for the most vulnerable are not so fast to smile. Their hearts are heavy, trying to make the best of the overcrowded conditions. The cold and conditions are debilitating! Our team has worked so hard over the last weeks. We have increased the number of appointments because so many are in need. We are so proud of them, working every day to make life easier for others. Το μωρὸ έξι μέρες να τραφεί· έκλαιγε, χαλνούσε τον κόσμο. Η γυναίκα παρακαλούσε για νερό. Τέλος από ένα σπίτι της αποκρίθηκαν: "Ένα φράγκο το ποτήρι".
