Art & refuge Two days of printmaking Exploring the life, loss & sanctuary found by Joseph Herman in Ystradgynlais 1944-55 22 Yr 8&9 students of Ysgol Maesydderwen considered the refugee experience and importance of community - the solace found in landscape and human connection. Exploring Herman’s inspiration, a brilliant collection of striking, chiselled African sculpture, students assumed poses for studies in ink that reflect strength and resilience. Botanical printing - oak leaves, daffodil heads, onion skin clippings, iron filings - folded into cloth wound & bound around a Hazel stick before steaming - capturing ‘stains’ colours made by the sideways rain of the valley as Herman noticed. Quick sketches from life - figures & portraits before pen & ink details from memory, just as Herman did of his miner friends and their families. Carbon copies - blueprints from research images. Delicate illustrative styles emerging to Gelli plate experiments with mark making & colour. Fostering unity in Poland through our unique approach 🖌️ In a transitional shelter for the displaced Ukrainian community in Poland, a vibrant mural was brought to life in just one day. Children with special needs, along with their families from various backgrounds, came together to partake in this meaningful project. In the charnel house of sovereignty, a new logic reigns. Here, life bends to the will of the state, its value measured not by inherent worth, but by its utility to the machinery of power. These are the biopolitical subjects, the homo sacer – the sacred man, profaned. They exist in a perpetual state of exception, the rules rewritten around them like shifting sands. Laws offer them no shelter, their bodies mere vessels to be monitored, controlled, or simply discarded as deemed necessary. The air they breathe feels borrowed, a temporary reprieve before the inevitable erasure. Borders become porous colanders, filtering the “desirable” from the disposable. Detention centers sprawl like malign tumors, bureaucratic purgatories where existence withers on the vine. Necropolitics, this grim calculus, dictates their fate. Their bodies, mere ciphers in a morbid equation, are deemed expendable in the grand pursuit of national security or economic gain. Drone strikes paint the sky with a cold, metallic rain, delivering a clinical death devoid of ceremony or mourning. They are the living dead, haunting the periphery of society, their faces etched with the knowledge of their expendability. Their deaths, when they finally come, are footnotes in grand narratives, sanitized statistics in a leader’s televised address. Hanging in the balance is the very soul of a society that tolerates such a macabre equation. Refugees and climate change are intertwined issues as environmental disasters, such as droughts, floods, and extreme weather events, can force people to flee their homes. This phenomenon is known as “climate refugees” or “environmental migrants.” Rising sea levels, desertification, and food insecurity caused by climate change can exacerbate existing conflicts and trigger mass migrations. Addressing climate change requires considering its impact on vulnerable populations and implementing policies to support and protect those affected. After enduring destruction during the war, a local Ukrainian school in the Bucha region has recently been rebuilt, symbolizing resilience and hope for the community. To commemorate this milestone and celebrate the children, a mural project was chosen as a fitting tribute. Engaging children, teenagers, and teachers alike, the entire school community actively participated in every stage of the mural’s creation, using it as a canvas to visualize their collective dreams for Ukraine’s future. Painting together in the central hall of the school, all children had the opportunity to contribute, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration across the school. story time👇📜the last picture might be offensive for some people but it's part of the true story and the journey from my hometown to Europe. this is what this art work I created for the book called "transmigration und place-making geflüchteter kinder und jugendlicher" is talking about. the migration journey alot of people takes to find safety. the last picture was taken by my father, in this picture we had to sleep on the ground with no mattress, outside, because there was no places left. as you can see even in the hardest moments, we still have hope and smile on our faces. the third picture represents when i was drawing on the wall of a prison in Hungary, i was placed there because i was crossing the borders to reach Europe with friends and family!! it was 10 year ago. small detailed Description about the artwork: The artwork metaphorically portrays the migration journey. It begins with a person leaving their hometown, followed by a tank while he is navigating through struggles represented by a boat and the sea. Eventually, they reach Europe, but the trauma transforms them into a cocoon. From this cocoon emerges a butterfly, symbolizing resilience and strength gained through support. The person then climbs a mountain, signifying overcoming obstacles. Finally, they evolve into a bird, flying toward encouragement in the clouds. The shining sun represents hope and accomplishment. And today it gave me so much joy to hold the newest member of our beautiful family. OWC, as we lovingly call it, has offered refugee women a place to gather, learn a craft and earn meaningful income to help them integrate into a new community and life after decades in refugee camps. Our team in Jordan is leading inspiring projects with beautiful outcomes, while witnessing participants’ significant personal growth. Our artists are collaborating with students from Al-Karamah School in Aqaba. Hands up if you are a perfectionist 🙋♀️ I have shared my entire life with a perfectionist mind set. This personality trait has often stopped me from going after my dreams. The fear of failing or being criticised was more potent than the idea of reaching my goals. As an artist, I have thrown away more paintings than I can count. I have redone artwork numerous times. I have cried myself to sleep knowing that the piece I have created is not good enough for my own standards. But something has changed over the last few years. I have realised that life is too short to let my perfectionism dictate what I deem as worthy or not. An extract from 'Shaka's' story in the wonderful book by Tania Kaczynski, whom I met on a train to Cornwall. She is an art therapist, daughter of wartime refugees, and founder of The New Art Studio in London, which provides a community and space for asylum seekers to make art. Shaka (not her real name) was unable to return home when her work/student visa expired.
