"We often expect leaders to be heroes with superpowers: x-ray vision to foresee problems, telepathy to understand every team member’s needs, flexibility to adapt to diverse challenges, and stamina to endure relentless demands. This idealized view of leadership creates an unrealistic expectation of infallibility and invulnerability. . In the face of these expectations, our WIMPs play a critical and often misunderstood role by serving as a sort of armor, or leadership costume. I’ve identified six main types of WIMPs: the perfectionist, the hard-ass, the achiever, the people pleaser, the imposter, and the contrarian. . These protectors, though well-intentioned, are informed by the fears and limited understanding of our younger selves. While WIMPs intend to safeguard us, their strategies are based on misconceptions about what effective leadership entails. WIMPs urge leaders to maintain a facade of perfection, seek relentless validation, and hide any sign of weakness or uncertainty to avoid perceived dangers like vulnerability, criticism, and failure. They push for an unattainable standard of superhuman performance, forcing us to stretch ourselves in unsustainable ways. . This pursuit can become our leadership kryptonite, not because human fallibility is inherently detrimental, but because denying our own limitations cuts us off from our greatest strength—our authentic humanity. The award recognizes church excellence in Deaf Mission and Evangelism for work in providing farming, sewing, and welding skills for deaf and hard of hearing people. They also were recognized for forming the first deaf United Methodist Church in Tanzania. Yatosha, a ministry for deaf and hearing impaired youth in Tanzania, was started by Wesley College graduates. Yesteeday night, i attended the @aawellnessla "Real Men, Real Talk" event on May 16, 2024, at Amazon Studios in Culver City, CA. This event focused on mental health and wellness within the African American male community. It provided a platform for open discussions about mental health issues, addressing the stigma surrounding mental health among Black men, and promoting emotional well-being. The event featured prominent speakers, including mental health professionals and community leaders, who shared insights and strategies for coping with stress, depression, and anxiety. The discussions emphasized the importance of seeking help and building supportive communities to enhance mental health outcomes. "Real Men, Real Talk" is part of a broader initiative by the African American Male Wellness Agency, which includes physical health screenings and community events aimed at improving overall health and wellness for African American men. The agency's efforts are driven by alarming statistics, such as the high rates of hypertension and mental health challenges among Black men and the need for culturally competent mental health care. I love serving and working for my community, especially when we approach unusual and challenging moments; we come together and we show love for each other. It was hot and we got much exercise running back and forth to serve those in line….but, loving and serving others is what it is all about! And I love seeing how others show up in the community to help without being asked like Terrance L. Barber , Willie L Williams, Katrina Tuggerson & Adner Marcelin. Not for a photo opp, not for notoriety, but because they just care. In celebration of the final chapter at MPCS for our senior class, they attended their last chapel together recently. This special Senior Chapel was led by the seniors who lead our chapel band and SGA. The class of 2024 selected Mr. Wes Anderson as their most influential teacher and Mrs. Katherine Stiltz as their prayer warrior. Mr. Anderson shared some great words of wisdom with our graduating class. Here are a few takeaways from his speech: "Life isn't a straightforward path; it's filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. Mere knowledge of the Bible isn't sufficient; it's about deeply believing in its words, recognizing their truth, and embracing their transformative impact. As you step into the next chapter of your life, avoid comparing yourself to others. Trust that God has a unique plan and timing crafted specifically for you. Embrace each chapter as part of life's grand adventure. Keep in mind John 16:33, reminding us that while life may bring challenges, through Christ, victory is already assured!" Extremely grateful for an awesome opportunity this week at the Mt Soledad National Veterans Memorial. As we’ve had numerous groups helping to restore and improve our cross, I was able to climb to the top of the cross with another great Marine, Nathaniel Donnelly. Thankful for these awesome men and women who’ve dedicated so many hours improving our Memorial! Hoping that you all will attend our Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27, 2024 from 2 to 3 p.m. as we honor the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines of Sangin, Afghanistan. We invite you to join us as the Veterans Beer Club (VBC) celebrates our 8th Anniversary Event on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (PDT) at Protector Brewery (Miramar), 8680 Miralani Dr., Unit 128, San Diego, CA, 92126. The VBC purpose is three-fold: 1) Assist transitioning service members through networking, discussions of important events, introductions to industries across the region, and ensuring service members are personally introduced to leaders in aforementioned groups. 2) Translate our military service to community service, ensuring we continue our leadership into non-profit, volunteer, and civil service organizations. 3) Continue our sense of camaraderie, thus safeguarding the bonds established during our military service and ensuring there is a safety net of resources for veterans.
