Happy birthday to Lillian Kiesler! Born Lillian Olinsey on March 26, 1911, she was a performer, arts educator and painter. In 1964, she married Frederick Kiesler, whom she had known already since the mid-1930s, first being his assistant and later his close friend. After Kiesler's death in 1965, Lillian tirelessly propagated his artistic oeuvre for the following decades, until finally giving most material to the newly founded Austrian Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation, Vienna in 1996. The #ShrineOfTheBook 1965 designed by #ArmandBartos #FrederickKiesler in the #IsraelMuseum in #Jerusalem is a wing in the museum that house the #AleppoCodex and the #DeadSeaScrolls “The shrine is built as a white dome, covering a structure placed two-thirds below the ground, that is reflected in a pool of water that surrounds it. As the fragility of the scrolls makes it impossible to display all on a continuous basis, a system of rotation is used. After a scroll has been exhibited for 3–6 months, it is removed from its showcase and placed temporarily in a special storeroom, where it "rests" from exposure. Currently it houses the Isaiah scroll, dating from the second century BCE, the most intact of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Aleppo Codex, dating from the 10th century CE, the oldest existing Hebrew Bible.[4] A facsimile of the original Isaiah scroll is now on display in the Shrine of the Book.”

Ti considero uno dei più grandi geni, visionari e anticipatori di sempre. Abbastanza dimenticato. Ma meglio così. I migliori son sempre al bordo del campo di gioco a far partire le azioni. Non necessariamente a finalizzare. Decenni fa, in una giornata di studio, in biblioteca, balzando tra un libro e l’altro, senza una regola, per immagazzinare più visioni e conoscenze possibili, scoprii la “Shrine of the Book”. La vidi e decisi che avrei dovuto andarci. In pellegrinaggio. Oggi, come fosse stata la fine vittoriosa di una tappa montana del Giro mi sono commosso. Ho compreso ancor più perché nulla dell’architettura contemporanea mi comunichi qualcosa.Troppa sterile immagine. Nessun senso profondo. Nessuna discesa rotolante in un utero materno. Nessuna misticità. Ma tant’è, oggi caro Friedrick ti ho abbracciato, sentendo quell’Endless, quello spazio universale e senza fine che ti ha contenuto per tutta la vita. Che poi questo scrigno sia all’interno di una delle massime meraviglie da me viste dell’architettura, dell’arte e del paesaggio che è l’Israel Museum, beh, poco importa. Our fifth day in Israel started at Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the Holocaust. It was so moving, especially the memorial to the thousands of children lost. The Israel Museum was next and there we saw the Shrine of the Book, where the Dead Sea scrolls are housed, and a miniature model of Jerusalem as it was during the Second Temple period. After that, we headed to the Church of Saint John The Baptist and then drove through Mea Shearim, the ultra orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem. In the evening we enjoyed a spectacular "Sound & Light" show at the Tower of David Museum. It was really cold, but the visuals were so worth it! The Dead Sea Scrolls are housed in the Shrine of the Book, part of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The Shrine is designed to look like the lid of the clay jars in which the scrolls were found.
