Sundays at the museum! The Jewish Museum in Berlin, an architectural masterpiece by Daniel Libeskind, is a poignant journey through Jewish history. Its striking design, with symbolic voids, evokes the pain of the Holocaust. Through immersive exhibitions, it honors Jewish culture, resilience, and the enduring quest for remembrance, serving as a vital educational beacon for future generations. Have you ever made a family recipe or recounted a family story? This is l’dor v’dor (Hebrew for ‘from generation to generation’), the act of passing down traditions. To celebrate International Museum Day, we are inviting our littlest museum-goers to adventure through the JMA & explore the important role our Museum plays in caring for historical art & artefacts from our past generations for the very purpose of sharing their stories with future generations. Together we will visit our newest exhibition Andrew Rogers: Where We Are (opening 10 May) & explore @andrewrogersart’s beautiful works of art before making our own sculptures & personal artefacts. Amit porterà in mostra l'opera A Transferable Safe Space. —— Maryan S. With all the horrendous and devastating videos and graphics of the atrocities happening in Gaza, I am (ironically) reminded of my visit to the Jewish Museum in Berlin @juedischesmuseumberlin. For me, this particular museum is one of the most influential museums I’ve had the chance to visit. The museum’s building and interior are used in such a clever way to make the visitors experience feelings of being exiled. Especially the garden of exile astonished me, the cobblestones and standing tiers are placed and designed in such a way that it causes dizziness and disorientation. A feeling of entrapment takes over, even though logically you know that you are in an open space. Taking a step becomes heavy, making one reflect about how difficult it is to be exiled from one’s home and how difficult it is to start a new life. People in Gaza are being tortured, murdered and forced to leave their homes and lives without a prospect of starting a new one. After the genocide of the Jews ended, the genocide of another population started by victims that had gone through the same horrors. And it’s still happening, getting worse each day. We’re watching a live genocide and exile take place in real time. How is it that we are so deeply saddened by one genocide where there is a museum to teach people about it’s history in innovative ways, whereas we don’t stop one that is happening? Will we clean our conscious in a hundred years time building a museum about the current genocide? Or will that also be disregarded as the humanity of the people in Gaza is being disregarded? They are not deemed worthy of living in humane conditions (no water, no food, no medical supplies, not even painkillers) or even living at all. Children cannot dream of what profession they will choose when they become adults; either because they are dead, or will be dead soon, or are just too traumatized by everything that is happening around them. Why is one genocide regretted and mourned, whilst another is being ignored (and even disgustingly celebrated by a certain group)? #gazaunderfire #gazaunderattack #freepalestine #gaza #genocide #jewishmuseum #berlin.

Today at the opening of the exhibition "Frederick Kiesler: Vision Machines.“ 🤩 Congratulations to the @thejewishmuseum and guest curator Mark Wasiuta for the wonderful installation. Make sure to check it out!! 🗓 April 25 – July 28 📍The Jewish Museum, 1109 Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street, New York This exhibition delves into Kiesler’s (1890-1965) experimental design practice, focusing on his Laboratory for Design Correlation at Columbia University from the late 1930s to the early 1940s. It's thrilling to see two pivotal projects from the Laboratory showcased: the Mobile Home Library (never before realized), which aimed to revolutionize domestic space, and the Vision Machine, an ambitious apparatus designed to visualize human sight—from optics and nerve stimuli to dream content and images. In the photo, from left to right: Stephen Cadwalader (The Estate of Frederick Kiesler New York); Gerd Zillner, Director of @kiesler_foundation; Mark Wasiuta (Curator of the Exhibition); Kristina Parsons (@kmpars_ Leon Levy Assistant Curator at the @thejewishmuseum); and @stephaniebuhmann123 (Head of Visual Arts, Architecture, and Design at the @acfny). #acfnyrecommended #exhibition #jewishmuseum #frederickkiesler #newyork #nyc

Walking into the room in New York’s Jewish Museum where Israeli artist Zoya Cherkassky’s darkly vivid and intense drawings, “The 7 October 2023 Series,” were on display, one felt a visceral sense of assault. The immediacy, the urgency of the images was palpable. They seemed to leap from the walls, confronting the viewer with the trauma they embody. The works’ bright colors—saturated hues of orange, purple, green and red—created a counterpoint to their black backgrounds and evoked a feeling of queasiness and dread. Cherkassky began making these mixed-media drawings about a week after the war began. She created all 12 in the weeks immediately following. The drawings provide a snapshot, a window in time, raw in its intuitive response and reflective of the artist’s state of mind. “I think it was some sort of psychotic reaction to the shock,” she says. “It happened to me before, when the war in Ukraine started. You feel so helpless and don’t know what to do, so you just do what you always do; for me it’s drawing.” Click the link in our bio to see more paintings from the series and learn more. #Arts #FineArt #Paintings #NYC #JewishMuseum #JewsOfInstagram #Judaism #Israel #Israeli #Israelis

As Jason K. Friedman renovated his flat in a grand townhouse in his hometown of Savannah, Georgia, he discovered a portal to the past. The Cohens, part of a Sephardic community in London, arrived in South Carolina in the mid-1700s; became founding members of Charleston's Jewish congregation; and went on to build home, community, and success in Savannah. In “Liberty Street”, Friedman takes the reader on a personal journey to understanding the history of the Cohens. At the center of the story is a sensitive young man pulled between love and duty, a close-knit family straining under moral and political conflicts, and a city coming into its own. Join us at the Museum for a book talk with Friedman on Thursday, May 9th at 6pm exploring his experiences traveling from Georgia to Virginia, uncovering hidden histories and exploring the ways place and collective memory haunt the present. RSVP and pre-order the book at the Link Tree in our Bio.

@opera_laboratori @Opera Laboratori #museoebraico #jewishmuseum #ghettovenezia #veniceghetto #25aprile #Liberazione

Lucie Hallenstein wrote a letter to her son, Lieutenant Dalbert Hallenstein, every day that he fought for Australia in World War One. Each week, Lucie would make her way to the docks with a parcel containing news from home, gifts of knitted socks & scarves &, at one time, silk dress shirts. Lieutenant Hallenstein died in action on 02 September 1918. All that remains of his story, captured in the letters written by his mother & held safely—having been read & transcribed by JMA volunteer, Kay Ronec–in the Jewish Museum of Australia: Gandel Centre of Judaica Collection. On Anzac Day & every day, we mourn for the loss of life of all people in conflicts past & present. We also extend our deepest sympathies to those who return home but whose lives are forever changed by the impact of war. Please note that the JMA is closed today. We will be open tomorrow & ready to welcome you into your spaces. ✉️ Lucie Hallenstein to Dalbert Hallenstein, 1916. Donated by Dalbert Hallenstein, nephew of Dalbert Hallenstein. We love this carved wooden menorah from Rabbi Reena Judd's collection, but we were shocked to see another in a post by the American Jewish Historical Society! A copy with a lighter finish was used by the United HIAS Service in Rio de Janeiro in 1960. You can find several with different signatures and finishes for sale online. This one is signed "R. Joseph" on the bottom. I really wanted to like Berlin, but I didn’t… I almost lived in this city but now I’m glad I didn’t. Something about this place feels unpleasant, cruel and cold. Just as it should. The legacy lives on… Reading the book Hanna made me sick. Now delving into the Man’s Search for Meaning is a little more bearable but still awful. It’s important to remember the cruelty that’s once been caused and stand out against any continuation of it (of any kind). Not only for that (and for the food!), I’ll surely come back and give it a second chance. Danke, #berlin 🇩🇪

Heute Abend beginnt Pessach. Stattdessen isst man Matzot, ungesäuerte flache Brote.

It lasts eight days. One of the central elements of this festival is the family supper called "seder", during which the Haggadah is read, and symbolic foods such as matza (unleavened bread), which replaces bread, are eaten in memory of the hasty escape of the Hebrew enslaved people who didn't have time to let the bread rise. During these eight days, fermented foods such as corn, wheat, rye, or malt are forbidden. Other common foods are maror (bitter herbs), which symbolise the bitterness of slavery; karpas (vegetables), saltwater or vinegar, which represents the tears of the Hebrew slaves; and haroset, a paste of figs and walnuts, which symbolises the mortar used to build the pyramids. 📸 Illustration in "Die Pessach-Haggadah" by Philipp Schlesinger and Josef Güns (Vienna, 1927, 1st edition). 🕯️🌿 Passover, one of the most significant Jewish festivals, begins tonight. This document is a haggadah, a text used to tell the Passover story. On the first two nights of the eight-day festival, Jewish families gather for a special meal that uses ritual objects & foods, called a seder. Through reflection, gratitude & questioning, Jewish people impart the story of the Exodus from Egypt to the next generation. This haggadah was hand-written from memory by Rabbi Elchanan Loebenstein in the Hay internment camp in 1941. Without access to ritual objects, Jews in the Australian internment camps during WWII relied on their talents to create what they needed. The Hebrew text in the scroll translates to 'to next year being free men'. To all who celebrate, we wish you Chag Pesach Sameach. 📜 Rabbi Elchanan Loebenstein, Passover Haggadah, Hay, Australia 1941, ink on paper. Jewish Museum of Australia Collection 3328.
