Looking at festivals as they arise out of our work and connection with biodynamic work. Of course there are also the Christian festivals but that is another aspect and not the topic of this workshop. My interest in these possible festivals started when on the Beehive gardens, our biodynamic initiative, we formed a community garden in the 1980’s. About 15 families took part and as we all had young families we grew vegetables for about 75 people. Soon the need to bring those families together and celebrate the seasons became clear. We extended this further into looking at what specific festivals we could create out of the biodynamic impulse 🌀 Expressing our gratitude to nature and the great gifts biodynamic agriculture has given us. 📣Introducing one of the fantastic workshop teachers at Soil Soul Social Centennial celebration, Hans van Florenstein Mulder 📣 🌱Hans will be hosting “Inner Development for the Farmer” here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect from Hans workshop: In this workshop we will look at what Rudolf Steiner said about meditation in the life of a farmer in lecture 3 of the Agriculture Course held in 1924. “It is not at all a bad thing if he/she who has farming to do can meditate. He/she thereby makes him/herself receptive to the revelations of nitrogen……. We suddenly begin to know all kinds of things…...All kinds of secrets that prevail in farm and farmyard—we suddenly begin to know them……. We go through the fields, and suddenly, the knowledge is there in us. We know it absolutely. Afterwards we put it to the test and find it confirmed. …… The merely intellectual life is not sufficient—it can never lead into these depths.” When we regard the sense perceptible world as we do in natural science, we approach a one-sided picture of the reality of the world around us by only considering the physical material side of nature. However, in the “Agriculture Course” Rudolf Steiner complements this one-sided picture with the reality of the super sensible world, which is accessible through inner work or meditation and “Living or context Thinking”. I hope to be able to develop a picture how we can start on this journey of inner work to build a “New Inner Landscape “in our soul life which we can project out into nature. Every year a new structure emerges decorated with evergreens, flowers and other materials. Developmentally, the children entering their tenth year (the #nineyearchange) experience "a new feeling of differentiation between self and the outer world." Sooooo excited that our local library system put this book on their shelves! It's a brand new reprint of an older book, but the message is so valuable and brings Steiner's ideas to the main stream. It's really well written, and includes lots of quotes from his lectures. So, for all my local peeps, please take out ALLLLL the Steiner books, because the more they circulate, the more often they will order books like this. Also, if your library doesn't have a book you want, make sure to ask them to order it!

It should be said, rather, that a person's character will be correctly formed when study is also life." ~ Education and Spiritual Science; Rudolf Steiner, Berlin January 24, 1907 I'm continuing to read through the foundations lectures, and this quote has me thinking Steiner would have TOTALLY fit right in with the homeschooling crowd 😂 I mean, really, how often do we preach this very thing!!

As Steiner inspired educators, our job is to remember that the child is the curriculum and our most important task is to learn about the child in front of us. One of the ways to do this is to ask questions. But not questions we already know the answers to, because children know that we are expecting a certain specific correct answer. We need to ask questions that encourage the child to tell us how they feel or what they thought or what they think will happen or what they will do. We need to hear their answers in order to create a deeper picture of the child. The Child's Changing Consciousness is one of my favourite book of lectures. I think that before you can even begin to create a "curriculum", you need to know how a child develops through life and all the forces that are involved. Because #thechildisthecurriculum (thanks Annie @thechildisthecurriculum for that hashtag!) and to *really* understand what is needed, you need to understand the whole being. My favourite quote from today's lecture: "Notice the difference: If teachers believe in the truth of their images and the words used to describe them, their inner attitude will communicate itself to the students. Innumerable examples of this can be found. And so, similarly, imponderables play into the interesting question just raised. It’s not important that, as the teacher, one has the opinion: I know my subject, the child does not know it; now I will ask my question, pretending that I want to hear the answer to something I do not know. It does make a great difference, after all, whether I ask the child a question, for example, about the Battle of Zabern, and I know the answer but the child does not, or whether I know the answer and the child also knows it. The untruth would be in asking something I already know. But I could also have a different attitude—that is, I am interested in how the child answers the question. I may phrase my question to find out what the child feels and thinks about a particular point. In this case I don’t know in advance what the child will say. The child’s answer could have many different shades or nuances."
