I've been waiting to get my hands on this cassette for over 30 years, and I didn't care what condition it was in--but look at this perfectly preserved piece of Texas hip hop history!!! The first time I heard UGK was from this tape, not the Jive Records version, but the OG VERSION....THEIR FIRST PRESS EVER!!!!! It has the original version of 'Tell Me Something Good' that many UGK fans have never heard, but its the version I always rapped over the more censored & "appropriate" version that most of us are familiar with. Too Hard To Swallow was not UGK's first album like many believe, The Southern Way was. Once Jive signed them they were forced to change up the lyrics on certain songs, as well as completely remove others. As a result of the new heavily censored industry version, we also got the UGK: BANNED cassette, which had the unedited & deleted tracks that were all originally on this EP. Chad Lamont Butler (Dec 29, 1973 – Dec 4, #2007), better known by his stage name #PimpC, was best known for his work with #BunB as a founding member of the #UndergroundKingz ( #UGK). Butler formed the rap group Underground Kingz with best friend Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in 1987 in #PortArthur, Texas. In 1991, Jive Records signed UGK and released #TooHardToSwallow, followed by the critically acclaimed #SuperTight. The group's third album, #RidinDirty, reached 2 on the #Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and their momentum was continued with features on the popular singles " #BigPimpin'" with Jay Z and " #SippinOnSomeSyrup" by #Three6Mafia. UGK's fourth album, #DirtyMoney, was distributed in 2001. Due to Butler's incarceration in 2002, UGK would not release another studio album until 2007's Underground Kingz, which included the hit " #InternationalPlayersAnthem ( #IChooseYou)", featuring #Outkast. Bun B continues to pay tribute to Pimp C through his music, including the tracks " #YoureEverything," a collaboration with Rick Ross, David Banner, and 8Ball and MJG, and " #PopIt4Pimp" which was produced by Mouse and featured Juvenile and Webbie, off of Bun B's 2008 album II #Trill. Living with chronic illness is tough at the best of times!! There are occasions when you can put on some makeup, a nice dress and feel almost normal for an hour!! And there are times that you’re so fatigued you can’t move from the bed to the sofa let alone out of the house. I’m here to offer some shared humanity, compassion, tools, support and lessons I’ve learned to help you to live well with (and who knows to live even better with) whatever you are going through. Ultimately, the reason I’m drawn to help others and why I’m writing a book on my own experiences is, I suppose, my offering to the world; my guide of how to transmute and transform trauma and suffering into something more positive, more possible ✨✨✨ It’s the discovery of post-traumatic growth and developing a new ability and capacity to cope with the weight of chronic illness, for those either personally suffering, as well as those supporting or caring for them. It’s about increasing the positive and reducing the negative. Letting more love and light in and letting go of all you can’t control. Focusing on the good and increasing it when you can. After all, healing is not the absence of suffering, but the capacity to grow life around pain, loss and sorrow and manage to hold it all gently. The book I’m writing is structured around ten lessons, the first of which is INTUITION. I encourage you to trust your gut, (literally!!), listen to your body, lean in to what your body is telling you, even if medical professionals, friends or even family members are not fully listening or maybe, not really hearing you. If you need rest, have it. If you want to try some movement, do it. If you need connection, talk to someone. If you need peace or alone time, make space to meditate with some calming music. During the bustling and busy festive period / holidays, please ensure that you advocate for yourself based on your intuition - and find more ways to live in tune with your body and give it what it needs!! Prioritise your wellness. Each step forward is progress on the road to recovery and healing but it requires PACE, REST and UNDERSTANDING. Be gentle and compassionate with yourself 🎁💜❤️
The first half of November is stacked with some true classic 90's releases. A few debut albums like that of UGK, Wu-Tang, and the solo career of Method Man. Wutang's debut is named after a kung fu flick "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" from 1978, and made up of nine members… each member has four chambers, resulting in "36 Chambers". Crazy enough, 'Protect ya Neck' cost only $300 to record in the studio- paid in full with quarters (worth more than $600 today)... This successful debut led to each member releasing their own projects like Tical, Liquid Swords, Only Built for Cuban linx, and more. There's also an excellent live recording release of some of the greatest Roots songs- recorded and performed in places like Switzerland, Zurich and New York City. The sophomore album of Snoop Doggy Dogg would also be the last time he would rap under that moniker as well as under the death row record label until he bought it in 2022. The first time I ever heard UGK was on the “Low Down Dirty Shame” soundtrack, back when almost every soundtrack coming out was ☄️☄️☄️. That was a great way to get a sampling of other artists you might not have otherwise heard. That was the case for me. There wasn’t much UGK being played in the Bay Area that I heard. In recent years, I’ve listened to a lot more of Bun, especially his work with Statik Selektah. And this drop from @vinylmeplease is dope! A nice add for my collection. Chad Lamont Butler (Dec 29, 1973 – Dec 4, #2007), better known by his stage name #PimpC, was best known for his work with #BunB as a founding member of the #UndergroundKingz ( #UGK). Butler formed the rap group Underground Kingz (colloquially known as UGK) with best friend Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in 1987 in Port Arthur, Texas. In 1991, Jive Records signed UGK and released #TooHardToSwallow, followed by the critically acclaimed #SuperTight. The group's third album, #RidinDirty, reached 2 on the #Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and their momentum was continued with features on the popular singles " #BigPimpin'" with Jay Z and " #SippinOnSomeSyrup" by #Three6Mafia. UGK's fourth album, #DirtyMoney, was distributed in 2001. Due to Butler's incarceration in 2002, UGK would not release another studio album until 2007's Underground Kingz, which included the hit " #InternationalPlayersAnthem ( #IChooseYou)", featuring #Outkast. Bun B continues to pay tribute to Pimp C through his music, including the tracks " #YoureEverything," a collaboration with Rick Ross, David Banner, and 8Ball and MJG, and " #PopIt4Pimp" which was produced by Mouse and featured Juvenile and Webbie, off of Bun B's 2008 album II #Trill. Bun B released the final UGK album, #UGK4Life, in 2009. UGK 4 Life had been recorded, for the most part, in the time frame between their previous album and the passing of Pimp C. Outkast paid tribute to Pimp C during their Outkast At Last homecoming tour in Atlanta, playing Int'l Players Anthem (I Choose You) onstage with Bun B and dedicating it to the late rapper. #classichiphop #houstonhiphop

Exactly thirty years ago today 'Too Hard to Swallow' was released, UGK's classic debut album. Thanks to Bun B and Pimp C's ability to write visceral street rhymes, and Pimp C's Texas funk, the album is a certified classic with three mammoth singles so important to the UGK story.
