I captured this photo from the East Rim of Big Bend, nestled in the Chisos Mountains. I found myself in awe of the breathtaking scenery, transforming the "front yard" of my backcountry site into an epic front-row seat to nature's splendor. With the majority of the trail closed for Peregrine Falcon Nesting, I relished the solitude, having the entire rim to myself, a rare gift in a National Park. Traversing in total, a 20-mile loop from Emery Peak to Boot Canyon, ascending the East Rim, returning to Boot Canyon and winding around the South Rim, proved to be the most rewarding backpacking experience I've ever had. The challenge of reaching this remote location was eclipsed by the solitude and grandeur of the landscape. After summiting Emery Peak, I didn't encounter a single soul all day. Big Bend National Park, often overlooked, deserves far more recognition. While it may not be conveniently located near major Texas cities, with the nearest airport in Midland/Odessa, approximately four hours away, it's a destination worth adding to your bucket list. @blanka_aknalb and I made it out to Big Bend! Day 1 after the 7h drive we took a very toasty walk down to the Window. The park hasn't gotten rain but strawberry hedgehog cacti are flowering. Havard's century plants are shooting up stalks covered in giant agave bugs (Acanthocephalus thomasi). Walking back at sunset we got to see some of the park's booming invasive Aoudad population. TPWD manages them with helicopter shoots to give the few remaining desert bighorns a fighting chance. The fourth day of the eclipse road trip took me to what turned out to be the southern most point of the entire trip. Given the vastness of the park, I only had time to check out the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, which provided a taste of what the park has to offer. This drive offers endless scenic vistas of the Chihuahuan Desert and Chisos Mountains with ever my twist and turn as you head towards the Rio Grande.

Awesome trip to Chisos Basin and trek up the Pinnacles trail in search of Colima Warbler this past weekend with @warblerophile & @graycatbirder 🤩 We arrived in super heat on Thursday, but Friday was cooler and great weather for hiking & for birds. It took some dedication but eventually we tracked down this skulky little warbler in a stand of maples high on the slopes, and once found, the Colima Warbler sang and played in the trees for as long as we cared to watch them. In fact we ate lunch with our little songbird! So cute. (There’s a pic in there of a bird in the trees, but that’s a Mexican Jay, which also joined us for lunch - I didn’t get pics of the Colima Warbler but Ash & Anna did!) This warbler is a bird of the highlands in Mexico, but it doesn’t pay attention to human imposed borders and so its breeding range dips just barely into the US, here in the Chisos Mountains. Big Bend National Park is a spectacular park located in southwest Texas on the border with Mexico. It's known for its vast size (over 1,250 square miles), diverse landscapes, and remoteness. The park encompasses the entire Chisos Mountain range, which rises from the Chihuahuan Desert floor. The Rio Grande River forms the border between the United States and Mexico for much of the park's southern boundary. This creates a stunning backdrop of mountains, desert, and river that is difficult to find anywhere else in the United States. Big Bend National Park is a hiker's paradise, with over 150 miles of trails winding through mountains, canyons, and desert. The views from the top of South Rim are some of the best in Texas. If you're looking for a challenge, try the Lost Mine Trail, which leads to an abandoned gold mine. For a more leisurely hike, check out the short and scenic Trail of South Rim. We had a beautiful short trail that overlooked the Rio Grande River that was connected to our campsite at Rio Grande Village RV Park, which was right inside the National Park and had full RV hookups. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, javelina, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, and over 450 species of birds, including the always fun to watch road runner. If you're lucky, you might even spot a bighorn sheep or a mexican black bear. On Saturday I trail ran a beautiful slow evening 5K in the Chisos Mountains, on Chiso, Jumanos, Lipan & Mescalero Apache, & Coahuiltecan lands 🤩 It was for @rising_hearts Earth Day 5K 🙏🏼 Scan the slides for more info and more pics of this glorious route (it was Window Trail btw!) Always special and powerful to be in new (to me) mountains, to look out over lands where so many people and beyond human creatures have walked and run before, to feel privilege and sorrow and wonder, and the connection that goes with it if you dare to feel it deep 💜 I found out I made the @renew_earth_running team for 2024-2025 today, which is spectacular, and another sweet celebration on this Earth Day among all the earth days we are lucky enough to experience everyday! South Rim Loop + Emory Peak ⛰️ I hit a new hiking milestone at Big Bend National Park for the longest distance I’ve ever hiked. It was quite the journey. This hike was mostly a mental challenge (although my calves are still quite sore today). First getting over my fear of heights to scramble to the top of Emory Peak, and second, finding it within to complete the last 3.5 miles of the ~16 mile (26km) trail. It was absolutely exhausting at the end, but the views and the experience we were worth it! ✨ ~16 miles (26km) total 9.5 hours to complete 41,250 steps 240 flights of stairs climbed I can’t recommend Big Bend NP enough.
