In a mental health crisis, Big Bend residents have options for help. Few Americans are aware of a relatively new service — 988, a direct hotline named the “Lifeline” for mental health, suicide and crisis intervention. The 988 Lifeline system has not been widely promoted in the Big Bend, partially because the tri-county area has long had a hotline administered by PermiaCare that provides mental healthcare services locally. The ocotillo is one of my favorite desert plants. they can be truly impressive in their size (up to 20 ft - 6meters). to my surprise I learned they're more closely related to the tea plant and blueberries rather than cactuses. Planet Marfa played host to a rowdy crowd of arm wrestlers and spectators this past Sunday as the community gathered for “Armed and Generous,” an arm wrestling competition benefitting the Marfa Education Foundation. We are honored (and excited!) to announce that BBRSP Park Superintendent Laura Jennings won Superintendent of the Year at the Texans for State Parks conference this past weekend! Laura has been the Superintendent over Barton Warnock and the river corridor for the past several years and has been an amazing asset to Big Bend Ranch State Park. Sadly, Laura left the park just a few weeks ago for her dream job in Alaska and was unable to accept the award in person so we accepted on her behalf.
