Iditarod Update: Sean got back on the trail from Ophir around 9:30pm AKST with just under 6 hours of rest. Sean made the decision to drop Chaz(picture 1) for a sore wrist. Chaz is not only one of the best looking dogs on the team, he is one of the largest as well. When running long distances that large size and extra weight can wear on them! The dog that was previously dropped on the way out to Iditarod was one of Sean’s favorites, Bedlam. I think in a way he resembles Sean, light hearted, funny, but hard working! After some hip stiffness Sean decided it would be easier on him to be sent home. Believe it or not it isn’t usually a difficult decision to drop a dog. As much as you want the team to stick together mushers know that you can’t have a team without individual dogs being in top health! The words I got from Sean as I was getting on the plane were that it was a sunny day and the views were gorgeous. I’m so glad he is finding the time to “smell the roses”. Sometimes I worry that this experience is lost on the mushers due to the pure exhaustion, but it always surprised me how much Sean could remember from each leg of his race last year. The human mind is an amazing thing. Team Seavey is cheering for the boss man! His team went up the gorge like it was a walk in the park. I don’t know about y’all, but it feels like there’s a different energy in the race now that Dallas is back. Knock on wood but I’m looking forward to see Iditarod history in the next 24-48 hours! Iditarod Update: This handsome boy is Mater! He is so gentle and loves to be cuddled hence the low quality photos of him. If you’re close enough to pet Mater, photo shoots will go awry! Sean dropped Mister Tomater (our nickname for him) at Rainy Pass due to soreness in his wrist. Just like when we exercise and come up with a sore knee or shoulder, dogs will show soreness as well. What I find most incredible about Sean, and all the mushers in our community is that they are so attuned to their dogs that the second there is a gait change due to soreness they know. While it may be something that an 8 hour rest could cure, because the team wasn’t prepared to stop, Sean made a great choice in leaving behind the sweet boy to rest and ship off to Anchorage! These mushers have the responsibility to not only manage the team to make it to the finish safely, but to tend to each individual dog’s health. As a veterinary student it gives me joy to watch these mushers tend to their athletes in such a speedy manner. A less cute but equally good boy, Sean, left Nikolai a couple hours ago after a decent rest at the check point. Travis Beals was interviewed on the insider about the trail from Rainy Pass to Rohn, check it out! I think his thoughts may be shared by most mushers about the return jaunt through the gorge and up the steps. Sean said it was going to be pretty sketchy going back. Until then I know Sean is looking forward, and is probably just now hearing about the change in route after Iditarod. What a year. Our hearts are with Aliy Zirkle as she heals in Anchorage. Iditarod Update: Sean is minutes away from the Rohn checkpoint, and after conversing with his brother, Brendan, this morning we believe he is going to push through the checkpoint and try and cut down the next leg to Nikolai. We will find out shortly if he proves us right! The steps and gorge are some of the more difficult and technical aspects of the race and they are now behind him... that is until they turn around and have to do them again! I got word from Sean last night that he’s all good, but the run from Rainy Pass was slow, hot, and challenging. I can’t imagine. I’m sure he is going to run as much as the team can while it is dark and cool. That’s a normal occurrence during the race, mushers time their runs and rests with the sun. I want to bring some attention to the sled Sean is using this race. It was a VERY last minute addition. The night before the start Sean and another musher had an unfortunate head on pass where the latter’s snow hook popped off and caught Sean’s sled! It pulled the runner into a 20 degree bend. To say Sean was overwhelmed was an understatement. Luckily his good friend Tom Knolmayer, without hesitation, offered to lend Sean his sled. A coworker picked it up in Wasilla and Sean got to work packing it up just hours before the race started. This community is so full of incredible people, but today our spotlight is on Tom! Iditarod Update: Sean is 14 hours into the 2021 Iditarod! The crew got Sean and the dog team out safely, and as you can see from the picture Bishop’s stoke level was high! Sean blew through Yentna’s checkpoint last night and decided to camp out along the trail. Usually mushers do this to get away from other teams. There can be a lot of noise at checkpoints and mushers want their dogs to get as much rest as possible! Sean has since made his way to Skwentna (population 90!) and is resting for a couple of hours! The majority of what mushers share on social media are the highlights. The beautiful sunrises over crisp mountain views, happy dogs, epic trails, but often what our friends, family, and race fans don’t see are the tougher moments. In this photo Sean had just finished a 300 mile set on the highway. He got back to the truck in the early hours of the morning, where he took care of the dogs, fed and housed them so he could sit in the truck for 5 hours to attend the rookie meeting on Zoom for the big race. Let’s just say it wasn’t easy for him to keep his eyes open the entire time. This is a sneaky appreciation post for Sean, to let you know how proud I am of your hard work! Meet Bane! Bane is one of our smaller dogs, he is very vocal, sweet and loving! He gets jealous if you pet his neighbors and not him and will make his displeasure known. He has a smooth steady trot and has impressed us this winter as a 3 year old in his first season of iditarod training. Bane has a promising future!

Il sindaco chiama allora tutti i Musher e dice loro che a Nenana, la città più vicina a Nome, hanno il siero ma che bisognerà creare una staffetta con la quale andare a prendere l'antitossina. Seppala inizialmente non vuole partire, poiché Singrid non ha che lui al mondo, ma poi Costance, una delle infermiere dell'ospedale e figura meterna per Singrid, riesce a convincerlo a partire. inizia così il viaggio. Balto e Togo - La leggenda continua (The Great Alaskan Race) di Brian Presley, 2020 La pellicola narra le vicende dello scoppio dell'epidemia di difterite che, a gennaio del 1925, aveva colpito la città di Nome, in Alaska, portando alla morte di un primo bambino il 19 gennaio dello stesso anno. La città, purtroppo, si trovava impossibilitata a curare tale malattia in quanto il siero anti-difterico era terminato. Si richiese quindi l'aiuto di altre città, che subito si mobilitarono per aiutare gli abitanti. A causa delle pessime condizioni climatiche, per gli aerei era impossibile portare l'antidoto. Stessa cosa per quanto riguarda i treni (non c'era un collegamento ferroviario) e navi (a causa degli iceberg non potevano attraccare). Per portare a Nome l'antidoto, vennero quindi usati 20 mute (squadre) trainate da Siberian Husky. Il tratto, che prevedeva una distanza di 600 miglia con una temperatura che si aggirava sui -40°, venne portato a termine il 2 febbraio 1925, quando la slitta, trainata dal leader Balto, arrivò a casa con le medicine. Ma Balto non è l'unico cane a essersi distinto in questo lungo e faticoso viaggio. Un altro husky, dal nome Togo, percorse 91 miglia, utilizzando anche una scorciatoia su delle lastre di ghiaccio molto sottili per arrivare prima. Entrambi i cani appartenevano all'addestratore Leonhard Seppala, che in questa missione si era distinto anche lui per il coraggio e la determinazione. Nonostante il film dedichi più spazio a Togo che a Balto, tutto sommato l'ho trovato interessante e carino. È stato bello poter vedere di nuovo come si era svolta l'intera staffetta con i cani, come è stato interessante capire che non solo uno, ma ben due cani si erano distinti per questa missione. Di Togo, infatti, non conoscevo la storia. Nonostante sia un film che consiglio, adatto alle famiglie, purtroppo non supererà mai il cartone degli anni '90.
