Review Blankman 1994 DVD Rating: 4/5 Blankman is a silly take on the vigilante hero that’s funny in its own right without outstaying its welcome. This film was met with critical disdain on its initial release and I think it plays much better now. Filmmaker Mike Binder switches to comedy-parody from his previous films focused on character drama. Marlon Wayans at this point was attempting to find the right material for the leading character, but this would mark him down after the minor success of Mo’ Money. The film would prove to be a commercial disappointment and critics had no idea what to make of it. The superhero parody concept was anything new with Hero at Large being one of the few memorable ones, but none of them had been commercially successful. This film had the unfortunate task of opening one month after Jim Carrey’s The Mask grew into a huge box office and cultural sensation. I found this to be an underrated comedy that takes chances and the sequence with the mayor takes this in a more grounded direction. It’s enjoyable when you run with it and Wayans is certainly committed to his performance. This was a bold choice for everyone and sadly it never found a bigger audience. Final Movie of my Obscure Arnie Triple Feature: Bogged down by some bad 90s CG, a weak screenplay with some terrible one-liners, and not enough James Cromwell, Eraser (1996) isn't great but it has its moments. The rail gun stuff is cool, James Caan seemed to be awake and into this performance (not always the case at this point in his career), and the final act is a lot of fun with Arnie and his mafia backup saving the day. I mean I didn’t laugh out loud a lot, but I found it quite entertaining. The overall ridiculousness of the plot is what made it fun— something that is frequently forgotten in movies unfortunately. The soundtrack helped carry it as well, adding to the already quick pace. Interestingly, despite the haste of the story, the characters still seemed fleshed out enough to have fulfilled their respective roles and have complete arcs. This movie is a good example of a simple story told well and with some style. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dimitri: I thought Sugar and Spice was a pretty fun time. In terms of the film being a comedy, I didn’t think it was the BEST at its job, but it still made me laugh a few times. IMBD classifies it as a dark comedy, which I spo makes sense. This also felt unique; not just your average cheerleader/teen movie. I really liked the story, though. It made sense and it shows how people can indeed go to extreme lengths for friendship or love. Cinderella Man: 📀📀📀📀📀📀 (7/10 discs) ‘Cinderella Man’ tells the true story of James Braddock. A boxer who was once a contender, but then an afterthought during the Great Depression. After a chance encounter, Braddock gets a shot to do one last big fight at Madison Square Garden. It leads to a revival of his career and the rest is, as they say, history. An emotional true story that hits all the punches. Russell Crowe stars as Braddock, not a huge stretch to imagine him as a boxer but jokes aside he delivers a very stoic performance. Paul Giamatti plays his manager and a wonderful spot for him to be in Braddock’s corner. Renee Zellweger as Braddock’s wife might be the only swing and miss as she just seems to be in another film with the style of her performance. The boxing scenes are surprisingly great. Ron Howard directs them in a way not seen before just when you thought all styles of boxing scenes couldn’t be reinvented. “Why don’t we go lay on the bed and I’ll fill you in?” Now showing #Fletch! I’ve gotta admit: I was a little disappointed in this. I always heard it was one of the best comedies of the 80s and I only really found myself laughing out loud a few times. It’s not a total failure by any means and it certainly is quotable... but it’s all just gags. Not my favorite kinda jokes to begin with. #ChevyChase is at his most Chevy Chase-ness, though; he’s perfect at being that asshole who’s smarter than everyone else in the room (or at least thinks he is). I guess I can see the appeal, but it’s this didn’t do much for me. Might just be a little too 80s for its own good. Any fans of this one? ”Abigail” (2024) Enjoyable and swiftly paced horror thriller with plenty of dark humor and a nice amount of blood and gore. The plot isn’t really all that original but the closed setting works quite well and when the story gets going it definitely delivers some genuinely entertaining moments. The finale isn’t the films strongest point and it could’ve needed a bit of a boost for it to be more memorable.
