Spike Lee Retrospective Number 13 - Da 5 Bloods (2020) The last movie released while Chadwick Boseman was alive (Ma Rainey was posthumous) is a Spike Lee joint that feels tinged with melancholy in retrospect. Four aging Vietnam veterans return to the Country where they fought to try and recover the gold they stashed there decades earlier but have only recently been able to locate. On the way they meet and confront their own past and present. The children they may have fathered, the demons they left in the jungle and the PTSD they have all suffered since. Delroy Lindo as Paul is the role of a lifetime here. An angry combination of sadness, regret and misplaced blame. The scenes of him talking to himself in the jungle really hit through. Clarke Peters is the heart of the Bloods as the soulful but badass Otis. The less said about Jonathan Majors these days the better; but he's really good as Lindo's son - rejected but also caring about his Dad's mental health. The direction is really good. The flashbacks with Chadwick as 'Stormin Norman' are well shot battles and I like the decision to have the older actors play their young selves without any CGI. There's something very satisfying about seeing these guys from The Wire in a war movie. As always with a Spike Lee joint, it's a bit too long and tries to tackle too much. The ending montage tries to cram in almost every part of African American concerns in 30 seconds. But it wouldn't be Spike Lee without that. It's in my top 5 so far and I enjoyed it as much as I did back when it came out in lockdown. Movie Review - War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017) Matt Reeves returned for the third movie in the rebooted Apes trilogy (soon to be a quadrilogy) to make an action blockbuster with strong Apocalypse Now vibes and holocaust allegories. Caesar is in the midst of a war against the surviving human colony, led by Woody Harrelson's rogue colonel (fully channelling Brando's Kurtz). After sustaining heavy and personal losses,the apes decide they need to find a new home. So Caesar and a small group (including loyal lieutenants Rocket and Maurice) lead the humans away while the rest of the primate clan go looking for sanctuary. There are big action sequences as you'd expect. But also some quite disturbing prisoner of war sequences of apes being forced to work and having food withheld. If you've read my previous reviews then you'll know how much I rate Andy Serkis' performance as Caesar. He conveys leadership while secretly hiding heartbreak so easily; it's probably the best mo-cap acting ever put to screen. Harrelson is chewing the scenery a bit but these movies are more about the ape characters than the humans. The score is rousing, the plot engaging and I cheered and cried at various moments. It's not perfect (a bit of a pacing issue for the longest film in the series) and it might be slightly weaker than Rise or Dawn. But this is strong and confident filmmaking from Reeves and the upcoming Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes has a hell of a lot to live up to. Certains plans m'ont rappelés ceux de l'autre film Mongole sorti récemment "Si seulement je pouvais hiberner", contraste entre le quartier porteur encore des traditions (et plus pauvre) des yurts et celui de la ville moderne.
