National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother This outdoor Catholic shrine was the brainchild of Canadian Servite Friar Ambrose Mayer (18??-19??). Assigned by the church to minister in Portland, OR in 1918, in 1923 Mayer identified a former quarry site whose natural beauty inspired him to create a shrine to the Virgin Mary. In 1924 Mayer purchased the site and mass was first celebrated at the grotto on 5/29/1924. Please join us for St. Joseph Young Adult Lenten pilgrimage to the Grotto (Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrow) on March 16th for Mass, reflection, time to pray and walk around the grounds. Carpools will be leaving St Joseph at 10 am. Mass will be said at 2 pm by Father Loftus. Before or after Mass, people are welcome to explore the upper gardens and admission is $9.95 for that. The lower gardens are free. Following Mass, we will meet at a brewery nearby for fun and fellowship. ICHSA West Quarterfinals @ Sherwood HS in Oregon: @bahs_dynamics closed out the showcase and held their own in a field with last year’s top two high school a cappella groups in the nation. Even though the Dynamics won’t be advancing to the semifinals, they scored really well and received lots of great remarks from the judges and audience. Beyond proud of how well they did in their first ever competition and grateful for all the memories made on the trip. Opera Cecilia year three at the Grotto Festival of Lights was a lovely and joy filled evening! I got to challenge myself with a Mozart work that I have always wanted to sing in a beautiful acoustical space. Tanis and Marcos sounded incredible in the Spanish set, and our pianist Jennifer was wonderful as ever. . We were let into the Grotto early for a recording session alone in the chapel, then we returned to help open the festival as live performers for its official first night! We had a lovely audience for our live performance… I couldn’t help but notice many phone cameras out recording us… so not gonna lie we kind of felt like celebrities. 😂 . I got to break the ice on a four movement work for solo soprano, with everything from insanely long legato phrases, to challenging coloratura and optional cadenzas, high notes, and recitative. What an absolute thrill. We couldn’t have asked for this day to go any better, and with every single performance I always revive my deep love for singing. 💕🎶 . Thank you to the staff @thegrottopdx for helping us pull off this day, and thank you to @materdeiradio for being so open to collaboration. Just a little editing to do and then we officially submit our recording for broadcast! It’s a beautiful time of year at #TheGrottoPDX 🙏 Oh, Loving God, in today’s reading we are encouraged to present ourselves as a new creation. Give me the grace today to do my best with the help of Christ to transform myself to His new creation and to be free to live totally as Your new creation. I live with so many distractions that clamor for my attention. Allow me to focus more directly to see the disrepair in my life when I stray from Jesus. Sometimes I do not see the transformation Christ has done in my life and is still doing. Allow me to present myself as a new creation that You have worked in me. I praise and thank you for giving me access to Your grace so I may live a new life. Amen.
