This photo was taken in Thukla Pass beside the Everest memorial, which pays homage to mountaineers who sadly lost their lives while climbing Everest. Needless to say, it was an incredibly moving and humbling experience, and we must’ve spent close to an hour reading tributes to all of these incredible people who died following their dreams – including tributes to pioneers like George Mallory, Andrew Irvine and Rob Hall, among many others. Interestingly, research shows that more than half of the 192 deaths recorded between 1921 and 2006 of those attempting to summit Everest occurred during the descent – a stark reminder of just how dangerous mountain climbing can be, even for the most experienced and well-prepared climbers. Passing through Thukla Pass on our way to Lobuche base camp. Known as the Climber’s Memorial, this site houses monuments to those who have perished on the mountains. Having dreamt of Everest most of my life, I’ve known of many of the names which are found here and am humbled to be seeing it in person. In spite of what may be viewed as a sad place, the mood is bright here as those who pass through are honoring the spirit of those who have gone by living this mountain life to the fullest. The memorial for Babu Chiri read as follows: LATE BABU CHIRI SHERPA: Babu Chiri Sherpa was born on June 22 1965 in Taksindi-Chhulemu, Solukhumbu. At the very young age of 13 he started his career as a climber. By the age of 36 he had summited Everest 10 times (twice in two weeks, spent and unprecedented 21 hours on the summit without the aid of oxygen an become the fastest climber of the world’s highest peak by climbing it in 6 hours 56 minutes, thus creating two unique world records on Everest. On Sunday the 29th of April 2001 while on his way to summit of Mt Everest for the 11th times, he fell into a deep crevasse this extraordinary climber left this world. May his soul rest in peace and his dreams be fulfilled. His world records are: 1. Summit twice in two weeks in Spring 1995 2. Spent 21 hours on the summit without oxygen in Spring 1990 3. Day 8 - Everest Base Camp Trek. We walked about 6 hours today from Dingboche (4,410 m) to Lobuche (4,910 m). 1) Heading north from Dingboche we had a wide valley on our left hand side with the Tsola River running through it, draining water off Everest’s Khumbu Glacier. Looking back we could see the village of Pheriche where we would stay on our return journey. 2) Crossing over the very rocky riverbed at Thukla (4,620 m), also called Dughla, with Lobuche peak (6,145 m) behind. 3) Dotted with chortens, cairns and prayer flags the Everest Memorial at Chukpi Lhara is dedicated to the hundreds of Sherpas and climbers who have died on Everest. 4) The mountains of Pumori (7,161 m) and Lingtren (6,714 m) on the left; Nuptse (7,861 m) on the right. I’m unsure what the mountain in the middle is, but it may be in China. The terrain is very barren and rocky as you get closer to Everest. 5) Approaching the settlement of Lobuche, the penultimate one before reaching Everest Base Camp. …. EBC & Gokyo Lakes dag 7️⃣: Dingboche naar Lobuche. Het begint eentonig te worden, maar het was wéér een mooie dag.🌞🙈🇳🇵 Overdag zo'n 20C... (en 's nachts -20C❄️). Heerlijk! (Overdag dan hé😉) Vanuit Dingboche 'Nepali flat' over een grote weide richting Thukla. Hier een lekker bordje 'fried noodles' weggewerkt met onze smoel in de zon. Daarna een klein klimmetje richting Thukla pass (4.800m) (zie foto) en door naar Lobuche (4.922m) waar we vroeg in de middag aankomen. Erg fijn, want zo hebben we lekker veel tijd voor thee.🫖 . . VII. Return from Frost to Foliage We were supposed to hike to Kala Patthar early in the morning to catch the sunrise, but the freezing temperature forced us to abandon our plan. Some of the expedition team went out but had to return after just 30 minutes due to the unfavourable weather. Before leaving Gorakshep, I left my Malaysian flag in the lodge where I stayed. If any Malaysians find it, you’re more than welcome to leave your signature! The morning snowfall made the return trek another taxing task. I nearly fainted on the way back from Gorakshep to Lobuche, blaming the dry and less appetising chapati with eggs I had for breakfast. However, after having an energy bar and black tea heavily sweetened with sugar in a teahouse in Lobuche, I revived. Continuing our trek, we reached Pangboche just as the sky turned dark. My body felt better than ever after descending about 1200m. V. Where Green Fades to Stone No acclimatisation day for us as we lagged behind schedule. The landscape had drastically transformed from lush greenery to rugged rocks. We hiked uphill to the Everest Memorial in Thukla, a place that commemorated the heroes who had lost their lives attempting to summit Mt. Everest. However, this phase of the journey marked the beginning of the fun. At those altitudes, mild headaches, dizziness, and fatigue kicked in, adding a new layer of difficulty to our adventure. We trekked through the solitary wilderness, faced with brutal cold, arid air, and fierce Himalayan winds, which left us battling runny noses and the infamous Khumbu cough. The journey tested us at every step. Eventually, we arrived at a humble timber-built guesthouse in Lobuche, lacking insulation, and offering unappetizing mountain food, further dampening our spirits. Not to mention wiping our bodies with icy-cold wet wipes in the biting cold was a whole new level of torture. Vieuwpoint on Thukla Pas (4800 m), Thugla, Khumbu District, Himalayas, Nepal Thukla Pass or Thugla (4800 m) is a memorial viewpoint lying along the Everest Base Camp route. It’s the memorial place and the saddest point because the top of the Thukla Pass showcases over 100 memorials of the climbers and Sherpas who lost their lives in the mountains. The top of the place has small stone and cement structures with beautiful prayers written on them. These structures were built as memorials in the name of the climbers who lost their lives on the Himalayan peaks. The deceased family, and well-wishers or the local sherpas as a sign of respect build these. Some prayers on tombstones include “Go Sleep Forever in Everest, His Soul Will Always Remain Alive, and Rest in Peace.”. There are memorials of legendary climbers as Babu Chiri Sherpa and Scott Fischer.
