I visited a friend in Indianapolis this weekend, and we were able to visit @thewhisperingshelf for their grand opening on National Independent Bookstore day! I picked up this beautiful copy of The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa ✨
✨Book Review✨ 📚For the Wolf ✍🏼Hannah Whitten ⭐️2 out of 5 I wanted to love this book. The synopsis was so promising, and I went in with high hopes. Sadly though, that was the best thing about For the Wolf. It was a smidge of Little Red Riding Hood, a lot of Beauty and the Beast, and the tiniest bit of Snow White with the glass coffin bit. This book was over 400 pages, and I feel like nothing happened. The author didn’t seem to have an exact direction she was headed. I couldn’t get a clear picture of what should be happening in my head. Couldn’t see the Wilderwood, the Keep, couldn’t imagine the Shrine. The writing just didn’t evoke strong imagery. The duel POVs didn’t feel like they went together at times. I feel like the entire story was very 2 dimensional. The characters lacked depth. The world felt haphazardly put together. The entirety of the relationship between Red and the Wolf, Eammon, was him keeping a secret from her for “her own good” and her doing what she thought was best anyway, which ended in some type of problem. And that happened over and over again. It was frustrating when they could have avoided all of that after Eammon realized Red was different. It didn’t add anything to the story to have them continually trying to protect each other by denying themselves because they thought it was best. It just became exhausting. All in all, it just fell incredibly flat. It is part of a duology and, even though it ended in a cliff hanger, I have absolutely no desire or intentions to read the next one. the year of the returning to old favourites. I woke up at 3am the other morning, as my stubborn baby wouldn’t go back to sleep & found myself scrolling on here (classic) coming across @jonathangolding_books post about his reflections on his year of reading so far & the topic of rereads. I love revisiting a book, it’s equal parts comforting like returning to your favourite tv program or film as well as a reminder of a book that made me go ‘that’s it, that’s why I love reading’. I started reflecting on why I hadn’t reread as many books in the last 2 years when i use to return to favourites quite regularly & I think I came to the realisation it’s because of my consumption. I read reviews on here about books that intrigue me, they then go on a infinitely lost list that gets added to almost daily so when I go to book fairs or thrift shops I rarely come away empty handed. even though in my head it might just be adding ‘one’ to the pile, the pile gets added on frequently. when the urge to reread a book comes about, I feel guilty about not making the most of my time since reading has gotten significantly slower now, averaging 2 books a month, so I push forward with picking up a new book to conquer my tbr pile leaving my favourites behind. this year I decided not to do a 20 or 24 list but instead posted my entire book collection (as of the beginning of the year) stating I wanted to read every book I owned which included books I’ve already read (I only keep books I’ve read & loved). so here’s three of my favourite books I want to reread this year and one I’ve already started reading - exception by anna hope.

As soon as I found out that Willa makes an appearance in this book, I was honestly sold from the start since she is my favorite character Elsie has ever written! The Willa x Ford banter is everything I could have hoped for honestly 😆 I absolutely loved the FMC Rosie, and I was laughing out loud at some of things she said throughout. The single most important thing we can do to glorify God with our reading is to make sure we are spending time in His Word. Scripture is the primary way that God reveals himself to us. He tells us through his Word how we should live in light of the fact that he has graciously saved us. When we spend time reading and studying the Bible we learn many things, including what brings glory to God. Knowing what the Bible says sets us up to be discerning when we come across things in the books we read that do not align with the truth of scripture. This will help us to make good choices about what books we choose to spend time reading and how we apply/internalize the things we do read. With then in mind, I encourage you to spend some time today and make a plan for your Bible study this week! #biblethenbooks

Honestly, the most eye opening and quietly shocking read; it’s made its way into many conversations since I started reading it and finished last night! Five hundred stars 🌟 @ccriadoperez Now: The Wren, The Wren was kindly sent to me by @vintagebooks - I’m about 1/5 of the way through and loving it. Longlisted for the @womensprize ; looking forward to see how far it gets! @thewrengirl Next: The Unwilding is due to be released in July. I can’t wait to read this ARC sent by @4thestatebooks. Nie jestem zdecydowanie z drużyny „I like big books and I cannot lie” (jest nas więcej? czasem mam wrażenie, że jestem w mniejszości). Mam z obszernymi książkami ten problem, że trafiam potem na coś takiego jak debiut Celeste Ng i tylko w nielicznych przypadkach jestem w stanie znaleźć rozsądne uzasadnienie dla sztucznego pompowania objętości powieści, które mogłyby być krótsze o połowę 🤷🏻♀️. A Celeste pisze wspaniale. W tę powieść się wsiąka i próbuje się nawigować po tych mętnych, niespokojnych wodach rodzinnych zawiłości od pierwszych stron. „Wszystko, czego Wam nie powiedziałam” to świetnie skonstruowana opowieść o wpływie rasy i tożsamości na budowanie własnego ja oraz próby odnalezienia się w rzeczywistości zacienionej imigrancką traumą. Intryga rozsnuta przez Ng nie jest tak naprawdę szczególnie skomplikowana, ale pierwsze role w tym spektaklu przypadają wyrazistym postaciom i ich tajemnicom: już dawno nie czytałam książki, której bohaterowie posiadaliby tak zróżnicowaną paletę cech. Zaginięcie Lydii odkrywa całą sieć relacji, w które wrzuceni są bohaterowie, a wiele z ich przemilczanych doświadczeń uwypukla pewne cechy i pozwala lepiej zrozumieć podejmowane decyzje. I to, co podoba mi się najbardziej: bohaterowie tej książki nie są kryształowi. Ich ścieżka do osiągnięcia własnych celów jest wyboista, pełna potknięć i pokus, a podniesienie się po upadkach nie zawsze jest łatwe. To wspaniała historia o poświęceniu i dostosowywaniu się do społecznych oczekiwań (lub wprost przeciwnie, próbom wymknięcia się poza schematy), ale też o rywalizacji między rodzeństwem, kłamstwie, że każde dziecko w rodzinie kochane jest tak samo, i o spełnianiu własnych marzeń rękami potomstwa. Ja do historii bohaterów wykreowanych przez Ng na pewno jeszcze kiedyś sięgnę - bo znalazłam zaskakująco dużo prawdy i refleksji w tych brzydkich, starannie markowanych odpryskach codzienności, z których składa się ta opowieść. @wydawnictworelacja dziękuję za współpracę 🤍

Bought 2 WIT books (the dispersal by Inaam Kachachi and Embroidery by Sigrún Pálsdóttir and got a free ARC of Catalina by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio!) Husband bought Ancillary Justice to start a new trilogy. Not shown are the tote bag, stickers, and pin we picked up as well. Overall, it was a fun morning, and maybe I'll actually finish a book before the end of the month?! I’ve never felt anything like it.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 Book: Just for the Summer Author: Abby Jimenez if the bolter by taylor swift was a book, this would be it 🥹 i adore abby jimenez books so, so much. they always make my heart full before breaking it and then fixing it back up again right at the end. the CHEMISTRY between emma and justin was out of this world. if these two were a real couple, they would 100% stay together until they were old and grey, i adore them so much. as always with abby’s books, these characters felt so real to me, emma reminded me so much of both myself and a couple of people close to me, and sometimes that made it hard to read, but it was also so refreshing to see those people represented and it just made my heart happy. there was a big twist at the end that i didn’t see coming at all, and although they can all be read as standalones, i would make sure to read both Part of Your World and Yours Truly before reading this one, because otherwise you won’t appreciate the twist as much! Fabuła przeplata się ciekawie poprowadzoną akcją, nadmiarem dziwnych rozmyślań dziennikarza z opisami zbrodni Szklarza. Jest zaskakująco, momentami nudno, by za chwilę znowu coś się zadziało. "Szklarz" to nie tylko historia kryminalna, ale także głębokie studium ludzkiej psychiki, złożonej natury zła oraz napięcia między sprawiedliwością a zemstą. Moment kulminacyjny jest nie tylko emocjonujący, ale także pełen dramatyzmu i wewnętrznej walki bohaterów między życiem a śmiercią. A zakończenie... wow! Mistrzostwo! It's been on my desk in direct view for months and months Finally started reading it a few weeks back, couldn't have done it at a better time. Keep reading to find out why. . Rural setting. Odisha. Tribal way of life, vastly different from what most of us have been fed to believe all our lives. As you read, you'll realise how similar it is to the political state of our country right now, how beautiful colors like orange and red have been deeply, deeply maligned by the powers that be. The book has been labelled YA, rather unfortunately, because it should be read by anyone and everyone that can spare any time to read. We sit in our air-conditioned houses, where electricity and running water is the norm, where the next meal is a given, not a luxury, where a child has toys and a school, not tools and a workplace. Right now, a lot of us need hope. Reading this gave me some. For years now, we wake up, do our jobs, hear the same kind of news every single day. Every. Single. Day. I cannot recall the last time I actually saw or read a piece that wasn't draining. In the midst of this relentlessly dour stream of content, a bit of fiction, that's very close to our reality, certainly helps. We've not had the good fortune of positive results so far. Reading Update 📖✨ Last: Funny Story 💜 So it kind of is a Funny Story… we went to a friend’s wedding yesterday, and there was a longer break between the ceremony and reception. So we came home, and I finished this book, which I loved! And then right before we went to leave, my knee twisted and popped out of its socket 😫 The most pain I’ve ever felt! It popped back in on its own, but safe to say, I’ll be resting as much as possible today. To taka dobra, życzliwa i cudowna kobieta, za którą stoi trudna przeszłość. Jednak to, że jej to nie złamało i nadal była promykiem słońca, było czymś wspaniałym. Jestem przekonana, że Mariana Zapata najlepiej kreuje gburowatych mężczyzn, którzy mimo swojego grubego pancerza mają „to coś”, przez co czytelnik czuję, że nie taki z niego gbur, jak go malują. 😉 Taki właśnie jest Ripley niedostępny, gburowaty i noszący zbroje, przez którą ciężko się przebić. Pokochałam ich, relacje jaka się między nimi zrodziła i osobowości. Uwielbiam to, że dzięki obszernym książkom autorki możemy poznać bohaterów właściwie pod każdym możliwym względem. “Закоханий привид” Марк Леві @ksd_bookclub Тома - французький піаніст з дитячими травмами (і далі ми знайомимося з його батьком і розуміємо, звідки всі вони взялися). Батько явився Тома у вигляді привида і сказав, що йому конче потрібно возз’єднатися з коханою хоча б після смерті. Тож хлопцю потрібно їхати через пів світу, щоб викрасти прах померлої жінки та змішати його з батьковим. Шо я вам скажу, завдання виявилося з капець якою зірочкою. Попри те, шо книга коротесенька і легко читається, я залишилася від неї не в захваті. Було дуже багато питань до роботи “потойбічного” елементу, до стосунків батька і Тома і якихось дивних пред’яв до 8-річної дитини, до романтизації зради, навіть якщо вона епістолярна. Коротше, до батька було багато претензій. І навіть раптова любовна лінія, що вигулькує з ніфіга, не особливо рятує ситуацію. Але мені дуже сподобалася думка про те, що фраза “живемо один раз” хибна, і насправді “Істина полягає в тому, шо помираємо ми лише раз, а натомість живемо кожного дня”. Мабуть, це нагадування про те, що треба цінувати кожен день і не відкладати життя на потім. Але загалом всі ці загони про привидів і смерть трішки мене запаяли. Ми обрали цю книгу для обговорення у @dnipro_bookclub_offline, і воно вийшло дууууже жвавим. Переважно тому, шо книга більшості не сподобалася, і ми не стримувалися. Dobry wieczór, Mole! Podpatrzyłam, że powoli na czytelniczy rynek wprowadzane są świeższe wydania dzieł Grahama Mastertona, dlatego też przy ostatnich zakupach zdecydowałam się przygarnąć pod skrzydła "Walhallę", ale bardzo możliwe, że niedługo znowu coś wybiorę między półkami i pochwycę w swoje łapki. 🤗 Czym prędzej, by okładka nie zerkała na mnie w ten wyczekujący, jednocześnie przerażający sposób, szczególnie o zachodzie słońca, zabrałam się za czytanie powieści. I tak mnie ona pochłonęła, że skończyłam przewracać stronice jeszcze szybciej! Powracając do starszej powieści autora, przypomniałam sobie o jego charakterystycznym prymarnym stylu. Wyraźnie widać tę dojmującą różnicę, biorąc pod lupę i porównując wyżej wymieniony tytuł z nowszą pozycją (przykładowo) - "Domem stu szeptów" ("Szpital Filomeny" i "Gloria" dopiero przede mną). Ale tak się składa, że akurat obstaję przy zreformowanym warsztacie pisarza, gdzie przeważa klimatyczność i budowanie napięcia bez znacznej brutalności. Znakiem rozpoznawczym historii o niemalże nawiedzonej rezydencji, którą wybudował Jack są pokręcone pomysły fabularne, (doprawdy ten wypadek mógłby być nam darowany😬), rozlew krwi, porcyjka erotyzmu oraz pewna fobia, która jest jedną z najczęściej występujących w społeczeństwie. Zazwyczaj ta specyfika powtarza się w dorobku autora, jednak nie zmienia to faktu, że czuje się on nadzwyczaj swobodnie w podobnej treści. Zauważyłam, że brytyjski mistrz grozy lubi kurczowo trzymać się tematyki związanej ze światem równoległym, innymi wymiarami i podróżami w czasie, co także widać gołym okiem w jego dorodnej twórczości. Especially when there’s so many people who can remember the show but there’s no footage or evidence of it ever existing. It went down a route I didn’t expect it to which was a big disappointment. Book 45 of 2024. “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” by A little while back @hotcocoareads mentioned reading this book and being surprised by the similarities between it and “Anne of Green Gables”(1908). I concur. Not only did I feel it was similar to Anne but also to “Emily of New Moon”(1923) and “Daddy Long Legs” (1912). But Rebecca came first on the literary scene in 1903. Was the precocious orphan trope borrowed by Maud from Wiggins? Probably not since orphans were having their moment in the early 1900s (I see you Sara Crewe and Mary Lennox). While I enjoyed Rebecca, I didn’t find her as faceted as Anne, as introspective as Emily or as interesting as Sara.
