So I bought a new bridge for the $65 black violin, but this bridge turned out to be very skinny and my mute fits on it perfectly. Too perfectly in fact. So I swapped bridges with my primary violin. Both violins I think sound slightly better than before. Abdul Wadud and Leroy Jenkins - Straight Ahead/Free At Last (1979, Red Record). Happy Birthday to Abdul Wadud and a Happy Belated Birthday to Leroy Jenkins. This is a record I’ve long wanted, but I’ve wanted to find it here in the states. Thankfully, my buddy Adam (@the_creator_has_a_master_plan) came in clutch and sold me a copy very cheaply (along with a beautiful copy of Abdul and Julius Hemphill’s Live In New York). I don’t have much to say tonight on this, except that I’m recognizing some changes in my tastes lately. I’ve been seeking out recordings of solo performances and small ensembles (mostly duos and trios). I’ve also noticed that many of these records are from performers who have roots in jazz, but frequently eschew common jazz stylings in favor of experimenting through free improvisation. This record scratches both of these itches simultaneously by being a duo performance performed on cello and violin: two instruments not commonly found in jazz. Jenkins and Wadud are such natural collaborators, seemingly playing to each other more than anything else. The performances on the first side long track “Straight Ahead” blend and come together so well, it almost sounds like a piece from a lost opera or concerto. The second track “Free At Last” features some of the best solo performances of their careers. Wadud occasionally indulges in his percussively plucked staccato melodies, which are some of favorite moments on the whole record. And Jenkins solos are so sharp and intense, it sometimes gives me anxiety. It’s tremendously well recorded too. I know I’m always recommending the records I buy, but you really should seek this out immediately, or at least sample the rips on Youtube. You won’t be disappointed.

April was a busy month! I performed with Infused Sound Healing, Park ICM Orchestra, 417 String Quartet, Fountain City String Quartet, Village on Antioch, Jan Krabill, Electric Light Orchestra, a couple of high school choirs, and my newest music ensemble, Midtown Sound. Midtown Sound is a collective of string musicians in the Kansas City area performing classical favorites and popular hits. There are so many amazing musicians that I work with regularly and I wanted to have a group that could have personnel flexibility. This month, Midtown Sound has performed as a string quartet, string duo, and a piano quartet. I am excited to grow this business and play beautiful music with my friends! If you need fresh and exciting music for an event or wedding, please let me know! @midtownsoundkc I had the opportunity to work with students at Spring Hill High School, Blue Valley Southwest, Olathe Northwest, and Musical Sprouts. I took a much needed break from the classroom, but it has been fun doing a little coaching this month! Most recently, I’ve been obsessing over jazz tunes, arranging music, and exploring new musical genres. There are some cool opportunities on the horizon that I am excited about.
