Situated just off the coast of Brighton lies the ruins of the west pier. Built in the 1860s and opened officially in 1866, it was built during a boom of pleasure pier building being the second built in Brighton; after the royal suspension peir. In 1893 the pier was extended and in 1916 and concert hall was added. Between 1918 and 1919 the pier welcomed 2 million visitors. After the second world war the pier began to see a decline in visitors so the concert hall was replaced by a fan fair and tea rooms. In 1965 a local company took ownership of the pier but unfortunately filed for bankruptcy soon after due to the increasing running costs of the pier. Only ten years later in 1975 the pier closed its doors to all visitors for the last time. Over time the pier fell into a state of disrepair. In late 2002 due to storms the pier began to collapse into the sea. In the months of March and May 2003 the pier suffered from two devastating fires, both of which are belived to have been arson attacks. The attacks destroyed most of the remaining structure and the English Heritage declared the pier unrepairable. In 2010 some of the last remaining land structures where demolished to make way for a new attraction the "i360". And over time the structures at sea have been damaged and worn down even more over time due to storms.
