This alluring human skull has a stunning, ivory patina with very smooth bone throughout. The back of the skull is incredibly flat, quite possibly due to some form of cranial binding. It gives this piece a highly unusual, and unique appearance. The orbits and nasal cavity are extremely well-preserved. Most of the dentition is missing post-mortem, while several teeth remain. This exquisite, high-grade medical specimen is in impeccable condition. It features a cut calvarium, which is secured with pins and hooks, and an articulated mandible on springs. All of the dentition is present, and in amazing condition. One of the maxillary central incisors has a small chipped piece missing. The orbits and nasal cavity are perfectly preserved. This skull was prepared by Clay Adams, and the original stamp is still visible on the left side of the parietal bone. Skulls in this condition are far and few between. The Konyak are one of the tribal peoples of Nagaland, a northeastern Indian state. They have a strong warrior tradition and are well-known for their headhunting practices. The heads of their enemies were taken as trophies, and usually hung in the 'baan,' which is their communal house. The number of trophy heads would indicate the prowess of a warrior. Their headhunting traditions have since been banned by the Indian government, and they were among the last of the Naga tribes to accept Christianity. This fascinating piece is in excellent condition, and is quite rare. It would make a phenomenal display in any collection. .
