Art:🖼️ Auguste Toulmouche, “The Reluctant Bride”, 1866. Private Collection. 📚 Auguste Toulmouche (1829-1890) was a French painter born in Nantes. He had a comfortable life and could access artistic education in his youth. In 1846, he moved to Paris to study with the painter Charles Gleyre (1806-1874). Toulmouche focused on genre scenes, especially domestic interiors with wealthy women. He excelled at costume painting– the accurate reproduction of different clothes and fabrics like silk, lace, and velvet. Although he enjoyed recognition at the Paris Salon, certain critics considered his pieces too frivolous and empty. For instance, the writer Émile Zola described his works as “delicious dolls of Toulmouche.” 🖼️ When Toulmouche made this painting, Impressionism was on the rise. However, Toulmouche stuck to the Academic style led by the French Academy. As such, he could exhibit his work in the Paris Salon of 1866. According to L’Univers Illustré (The Illustrated Universe), that same year, the painting also traveled to an exhibition in Bruxelles, Belgium.The Reluctant Bride is a unique piece in Toulmouche’s portfolio. There are classic elements of his style, but there are also variations. Let us look closely at all the details. On May 23rd, 1866, Toulmouche’s bride was featured on the cover of L’Univers Illustrée. The original title in French was Le Mariage de Raison (The Marriage of Convenience). Clearly, this wedding was not the bride’s choice. As an upper-middle-class woman, she could not guide her decisions with her heart. Her future depended on relationships that benefited her family’s social status. Sharing this cause I've been so busy and haven't had any time to draw anything AH! But this was so cool to do. This is actually drawn with a silver/metal rod on a primed paper. I had no idea you could do that, but it was really cool, and this drawing has an awesome metal shiny effect to it. Anywayyyy hopefully, with summer coming along, I can start to draw more! He is one of my favorite painters of Academicism and Pre-Raphaelite. • • Since I am interested in still lifes and have read a book about them, I often wonder whether Leighton has also brought the sybilism of the shell into this painting or whether it simply wants to depict the longing for the sounds of the sea or the sea itself. I think you can interpret something yourself. That is the great thing about art ♡ • • Symbolism of the shell: A symbol of lust (luxuria), sensual temptations and transience; its flesh was considered an aphrodisiac, its external form was compared to female genitalia; at the same time, the shell is a symbol of love and virginal conception, as it carried a pearl inside, like Mary once carried the Christ child. Went for as wide a value range as I could. I loved and wanted to express the force of the light and felt it expressed some of the monumentality of the model. This is really all about looking cool guys; And two brutal combats proved the most pivotal moments in Caravaggio’s lifetime. • The first was a fight between the artist and Ranuccio Tomassoni, purportedly over the latter’s unfaithful wife. • During a pre-scheduled face-off, Caravaggio murdered Tomassoni and was outlawed from Rome and forced to flee to Naples. • He worked in Naples for a number of months before seeking work in Malta, subsequently fleeing to Sicily after yet another brawl, and finally returning to Naples. • There in 1609, he himself was brutally attacked by an unknown assailant, supposedly hellbent on revenge from a prior assault. • He was slashed across the face and badly wounded, an injury from which he never fully recovered. • The artist died in 1610, aged 38. He committed relatively light but bizarre infractions, such as swearing at a constable or roaming with an unlicensed sword. • In one instance, he cut a hole in his ceiling to allow more natural light while painting; this impromptu carpentry gave his landlord cause to throw him out. • Beyond this, he was brought to trial for significant crimes at least eleven times, including scarring a guard and throwing a plate at the face of waiter because he believed his undercooked artichokes were an insult. • He spent some of his later years in exile.
