Have you heard of #NoMowMay? The movement was created by @plantlife.loveplants, who reveal that we've lost approximately a whopping 97% of our flower-rich meadows in just 90 years, meaning that our pollinator friends haven't been able to get the vital food they need to survive. 😞 An overgrown, healthy garden with long grass and wildflowers has immense benefits for local wildlife including the bees and butterflies - it can even help to lock away carbon below the ground 🐝🦋 So, what does this mean, and how can you take part to support local wildlife? For the whole month of May, challenge yourself to let your lawn flourish by not cutting the grass at all! Ready to take on the challenge? Get involved in #NoMowMay by DMing us a picture of your garden at the start of May, and then again at the end of the month 🌱📲

Give local wildlife a boost this season by offering food for them in your outdoor space 🌳 By taking small steps to safely encourage local wildlife into your garden, you can help to create a safe haven away from dangerous places they might search for food, for example, discarded food and drink litter next to a busy and dangerous road. Check out our handy guide for what you can responsibly feed UK wildlife, including hedgehogs, birds, foxes, badgers and squirrels, and how to be the difference in protecting animals in your area: link in bio via the Animal Welfare blog button 🐿️🌰 It is important to note that you mustn't put out any food that might be toxic to your dog or cat, and never attempt to hand-feed or tame any wildlife coming into your garden.

Have you ever thought about growing sunflowers to benefit local wildlife? 🌻 Introducing these beautiful flowers into your garden is just one of the small and super simple things you can do to give back to the place we call home, and all creatures great and small we share it with. Between April to May is the best time to plant sunflower seeds, and they only take a few months to begin to bloom! This pollinator-friendly flower is not only a fan favourite amongst bees, but when the seeds begin to dry up, these make a fantastic food source for backyard birds commonly seen in summer such as starlings, swallows, and goldfinches. 🐦‍ Learn more about how a little can go a long way, for the wildlife of the UK, via the Tails of UK Wildlife link in our bio.

Help keep peat in bogs, not bags! We may not have peatlands in Warwickshire, but they can still impact our wildlife. UK peatlands store an amazing 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon. Unfortunately, peat extraction releases this stored gas. Many people choose peat-free compost at home. Back in February our Northern Reserves team and contractors worked hard at Hook Common Nature Reserve to clear up the areas we removed some tress. An excavator also levelled out all the ruts to create wonderful woodland glades. We maintain woodlands by trying to mimic natural processes, but the key is not the management of trees but the management of light. Light stimulates plant growth and allows opportunities for new trees to emerge. It creates a habitat for insects and small mammals to thrive which in turn feed other species such as birds and bats. It creates edge habitat for nesting birds, and it stimulates the regeneration of habitat that can be utilised by iconic woodland species such as dormice. We are looking forward to seeing what spring and summer flora will emerge soon! #WilderHampshire #Wilder #Conservation #LocalWildlife #ProtectLocalWildlife #Nature #WilderFuture #Wildlife #TeamWilder #NatureReserve #WildlifePhotography #Woodlands #Woodland #WoodlandGlade #WoodlandRides #WoodlandFlora #Flora #Fauna #HookCommon #WoodlandManagement #Trees

🌿 It's National Wildlife Week! 🐘 This is a time to celebrate the incredible biodiversity on our planet and raise awareness about protecting wildlife and their habitats. Why should we care about wildlife? 🌍 Wildlife plays a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems that provide us with food, water, and other resources we depend on. Many plant species also rely on animals for pollination and seed dispersal. When species go extinct, it creates imbalances that can impact entire ecosystems. We're currently facing a biodiversity crisis, with extinction rates estimated to be 1,000 times higher than natural background rates, largely due to human activities and climate change! 🤯 Follow @JenFish23 #NationalWildlifeWeek #SaveWildlife #BiodiversityMatters #EndangeredSpecies#ConservationNation #WilderFuture #ProtectWildlife #EarthsAmbassadors#ElephantLove #PandasofInstagram #SeaTurtles

At the start of February our Northern Reserves Team and volunteers worked hard at Bassetts Mead to coppice and pollard the willow regen from the detention ponds. Did you know 🔎 Coppicing is a pruning technique that cuts trees and shrubs to ground level, causing new shoots to grow rapidly from the base. Pollarding is when trees are cut to the main stem or trunk, ultimately controlling the height of the main stem itself. By coppicing and pollarding on a regular rotation, this will help biodiversity. Cutting small areas of the woodland or hedgerow creates new open areas or glades, and due to the extra light level this will stimulate ground cover below. This results in other plants flourishing such as grasses and wildflowers. #WilderHampshire #Wilder #Conservation #LocalWildlife #ProtectLocalWildlife #Nature #WilderFuture #Wildlife #TeamWilder #NatureReserve #WildlifePhotography #Wildlife #NatureConservation #NatureReserve #LoveWildlife #NorthHampshire #ReserveOfficer #Landscape #Coppicing #Pollarding

Three years ago today, #earthoptimismcambridge started and my first video made as the Junior Wildlife Ambassador for @wildlifebcn was published as part of the event. Naturetastic | Gardening for a Wilder Future | Wildlife Trust BCN and Earth Optimism Cambridge https://youtu.be/8YCAB6wSeiI ‘Gardening for a Wilder Future’ was all about the difference we can make in our own outside spaces - however big or small. Earth Optimism Cambridge is part of a worldwide movement aimed at fundamentally shifting how we frame the environmental narrative, from one of doom and gloom to one focused on solutions and success. Earth Optimism has emerged from two key realisations: that fear without hope leads to apathy rather than action, and that conservation successes are numerous but largely invisible to the general public. As part of the family-focused Solutions Fair, I made this video for the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire showing will how each of us can make a difference in our everyday lives. This video is all about making our gardens part of the Nature Recovery Network, and how gardens - or even window boxes - contribute to a Wilder Future. #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #earthoptimism #TBT #throwbacktuesday #wildlifetrust #wildlifebcn #bedfordshire #cambridgeshire #northamptonshire #gardening #wilder #nomowmay #letitgrow #wildgardening #hedgehogs #hedgehoghighway #wilderfuture

Last month Assistant Reserves Officer Andy was busy making bat boxes to hang in some of our Isle of Wight nature reserves 🦇 Which was great timing! The day after he finished making them we found a bat hanging above our Isle of Wight office door (at Wilder Little Duxmore). Luckily our Isle of Wight Facilities Assistant, Hazel, is licensed to handle and monitor bats. So Hazel bought this brown long-eared bat in and gave him a check over. This bat was quite underweight (he only weighed 5.1g and should have been 7-12g) so Hazel took him in and fed him up. We were able to release this bat a week later after he put on another 3g in weight (using one of the new bat boxes Andy made). He successfully flew off that night 🌙 🦇 lease note: Hazel is licensed to handle, monitor and feed bats needing care under her work with @batconservationtrust, @naturalengland and the Isle of Wight Bat Group. #Bat #LongEaredBat #BrownLongEaredBat #BatConservation #Wilder #TeamWilder #WilderWight #Rewilding #Wildlife #Nature #Nocturnal #BatConservation #WilderLittleDuxmore #WilderFuture #IsleOfWightWildlife #IsleOfWight #LocalWildlife

My new Guardian piece (link in bio) is on the Carrifran Wildwood — a trailblazing rewilding project in Scotland that makes my heart soar. They say the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. Well, the founders of the wildwood did just that. … only they’ve planted 750,000 trees. Those trees are now thriving and filling what was a barren, sheep-scarred Borders valley with diversity, colour, song and LIFE!

I was lucky enough to be there on Jan 1st 2000, to plant the first 100 saplings. My parents were among the small band of friends who dreamed up this audacious plan, back in the mid-90s. And ‘audacious’ is the word. Back then, nobody had heard of ‘rewilding’. Most people — ecologists and environmentalists included — took the pared-back, nature-ravished Border hills for granted. This land lost its trees so long ago — perhaps a millennium ago — that there is no folk memory of the wildwood that once swaddled it. Then, a group of visionaries, led by Philip and Myrtle Ashmole, said ‘what if we could regenerate an entire forgotten ecosystem at landscape scale?’ Then, having found a valley, near Moffat, they set out to ‘crowdfund’ the money to buy it (‘crowdfund’ was only coined in 2006). Wilder still, it worked! Over two decades, it’s been astonishing to witness trees, wildflowers, insects, fungi, fish, frogs birds (recently jays, goshawks & eagles) montane shrubs and so much more flowing back into the valley. The only painful bit is the harsh contrast between Carrifran and most of the surrounding landscape — still dominated by monocultures of sheep or sitka spruce. But the Wildwood reminds us what is possible. And how quickly nature can roar back. Carrifran has inspired community-led rewilding efforts up and down the land. Now we need to grow the, join them up, and invite beaver, boar, lynx and more to roam through it all. To update the proverb I started with: The best time to start landscape scale rewilding was 24yr ago. The second best time is NOW. So let’s set to it. Carrifran Wildwood is a work in hope. I hope you enjoy the article. #RewildingBritain #Rewilding #CarrifranWildwood #WilderFuture 📷by the brilliant Murdo MacLeod

Grullas. Pirineo Huesca. The peregrines are back in Leamington! 🦅 Peregrine falcons were once scarce in Warwickshire, but in recent years, a local pair have been nesting high in the historic Leamington Spa Town Hall. They can regularly be seen soaring above the town. In partnership with Warwick District Council we host live webcams which offer unique views of the world's fastest predators. The webcams will be launching soon for 2024, so visit our website to learn more - and see all the action from egg laying to hatching and fledging! 📷 Lucy Burrell #WildlifeTrust #WarwickshireWildlifeTrust #WarwickshireWildlife #WilderFuture #WilderWarwickshire #30by30 #GreenRecovery #VitaminN #Wildlife #Nature #UKwildlife #NaturalWorld #NatureLovers #NatureShots #Naturegram #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography #WildlifePlanet #Wildlife_Perfection

Check out this beautiful photo of Fishlake Meadows Nature Reserve! 🌞 At the time of the photo we heard water rail and cettis calling with greylag coming into roost. Fishlake Meadows is an incredible wetland nature reserve in the southern Test Valley, just outside Romsey. Known for its beautiful and characteristic wildlife, it is home to more than 170 species of bird including osprey, bittern, cuckoo and starling. Have you got any lovely photos of our nature reserves? More signs of spring have started to appear! Hazel is a small, shrubby tree that can be found in a variety of habitats, such as woodlands, gardens and grasslands. It is famous for its long, yellow, male catkins (known as 'lamb's-tails') that appear in spring, and its green, ripening to brown, fruits (familiar to us as 'hazelnuts') that appear in late summer. Even the buds have started to flower 🌸 #Hazel #HazelCatkin #HazelFlower #HazelBud #HazelTree #Tree #MaleCatkins #Spring #SpringHasSprung #TreeBuds #Nature #Wildlife #WildlifePhonePhotography #Wilder #WilderFuture #TeamWilder #Conservation #WilderHampshire #WilderWight #IsleOfWight #Hampshire

Waxwings are a favourite among birders, despite the fact that many will never see one! 🐦 Every winter, birdwatchers cross their fingers and hope that waxwings will come to our shores from the forests of Northern Europe. Their arrival is never guaranteed, and in some winters we might only see a handful across the country. The first flocks are usually seen in the north and east, and from there they filter through England and can appear anywhere that berries are abundant. 📍 This winter they have been spotted at Brandon Marsh, Claybrookes Marsh, and urban sites in Rugby. One of the waxwing’s endearing quirks is that they regularly turn up in urban areas, so keep an eye out next time you spot berry-laden trees. 📷 Jamie Hall #WildlifeTrust #WarwickshireWildlifeTrust #WarwickshireWildlife #WilderFuture #WilderWarwickshire #30by30 #GreenRecovery #VitaminN #Wildlife #Nature #UKwildlife #NaturalWorld #NatureLovers #NatureShots #Naturegram #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography #WildlifePlanet #Wildlife_Perfection

Where have the starlings gone? 🤔 This winter thousands of common starlings displayed their mesmerising murmurations over Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve. Many people visited to see the murmurations and we estimate the total number of birds was between 15,000 - 20,000 starlings. Today is the last day to have your say in the future of Farlington Marshes 📣 Farlington Marshes is one of the Trust's oldest nature reserves and is a site steeped in history and wildlife. However, this site is at risk as the current sea wall is failing. If we act now and push for maintenance of the sea wall for the foreseeable future until such a time when compensatory habitat can be secured, the habitats established and a new Farlington created, then we will be able to safeguard the wildlife of Langstone Harbour and the wider area into the future. If like us, you love Farlington Marshes and its wildlife, then please have your say and respond. INSTAGRAM LIVE SAVE THE DATE! ✨ANIMAL COMMUNICATION AND INTUITIVE PAINTING ✨You are warmly welcomed to join me and Celtic wildlife artist and fellow animal communicator Jules Chabeaux @juleschabeauxartist for an Instagram LIVE on the magical date of 29 February, at 2 pm GMT/8 am CST, for a heartfelt and roving conversation about animal communication and creativity. Jules creates compassionate, exquisite paintings and illustrations of wild animals, especially focusing on wildlife indigenous to the British Isles, and her Weekly Wildlife Wisdom live broadcasts that she does on Instagram every Friday where she channels communications from animals are a grounding balm of sanity in a sometimes delirious human world. I look forward to them every week. Jules and I met through the Global White Lion Protection Trust @whiteliontrust community and I think the absolute world of her. She does species communication which is a little different style to my own so we will talk about that—also as I am a re-beginning painter we are going to talk about the creative, intuitive interface of the canvas or the page and what it is as an artist to be intuitively led. Jules shares so generously about her process through her own Instagram account and I am just over the moon to talk to her here. I hope you all will join us on the 29th :))) Love, Laura The featured painting is Grey Wolf Wisdom, by Jules! 🐺 #animalcommunication #animalcommunicator #wildlifeart #intuitivepainting #visionaryart #wilderfuture #artistsway #artistdate #creativelyfit #helpnaturethrive #rememberyouarewild #sacredandwild #natureboost #ukwildlife #celticwildlife #britishwildlife #everyoneneedsnature #therearenowildanimalsonlyfree #derbyshirewildifetrust #derbyshireartist #canislupus #inyoureyes

Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve has an uncertain future. There is just 1 week left until the Envrionment Agency closes its survey on the 19th February. If like us, you love Farlington Marshes and its wildlife, then please have your say and respond. Farlington Marshes is one of the Trust's oldest nature reserves and is a site steeped in history. It is also renowned for its bird life and is a go-to destination for seeing a huge array of species throughout the year including lapwings, avocets, short-eared owls and dark bellied brent geese. However, this site is at risk as the current sea wall is failing. Given the designations (national, European and international) there is a duty to protect Farlington Marshes and compensate for any loss. If we act now and push for maintenance of the sea wall for the foreseeable future until such a time when compensatory habitat can be secured, the habitats established and a new Farlington created, then we will be able to safeguard the wildlife of Langstone Harbour and the wider area into the future. Use your voice for nature on the Isle of Wight! 📣 Island Nature is an opportunity to share your thoughts on what can be done to help the recovery of habitats and wildlife on the Isle of Wight. Your opinions will help shape a new approach to nature conservation called the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). The UK has experienced significant biodiversity decline and habitat loss over the past 25 years. Of the 240 nations and territories assessed in The State of Nature Report in 2023, latest global data demonstrates that the UK ranks 12th and England worse still at 7th from the bottom. The wildlife, habitats, natural processes, and ecosystems on which we all rely on are disappearing across the country - even the everyday species we often believe to be common, such as starlings and sparrows, frogs or slow worms. In response, DEFRA and Natural England are working with local authorities across the country to help them create Local Nature Recovery Strategies as part of the legal requirement of the Environment Act 2021. The Isle of Wight Council has asked local ecological experts Arc Biodiversity & Climate to assist with the creation of the LNRS on the Island. Island Nature is the LNRS for the whole of the Isle of Wight and its inshore waters, drawing together experience and expertise from across the spectrum: regulators, residents, farming, forestry and landowner communities, businesses, community groups and environmental organisations, to shape positive change for wildlife. How can you help? Please take part in the Island Nature Survey. This short questionnaire will help us understand your priorities for wildlife and habitat recovery on the Island and help identify those places that you feel could work wilder! Ratty about rodents in your garden? 🐁 There are 18 species of rodent in the UK, varying in size from the tiny harvest mouse to the industrious Eurasian beaver. Of these rodent species, just four are mice. Many people view mice as unwelcome visitors. But far from being pests, mice are actually very beneficial for nature, spreading plant seeds around and providing food for creatures like owls and foxes. Read our new blog post and get within a whisker of Britain's mice (link in bio @warwickshirewt) 📷 Amy Lewis, Terry Whittaker/2020VISION, Wildstock #WildlifeTrust #WarwickshireWildlifeTrust #WarwickshireWildlife #WilderFuture #WilderWarwickshire #30by30 #GreenRecovery #VitaminN #Wildlife #Nature #UKwildlife #NaturalWorld #NatureLovers #NatureShots #Naturegram #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography #WildlifePlanet #Wildlife_Perfection

Spring is on its way and most notably we are starting to see the buds on the trees swell and burst revealing fresh green leaves and flowers. But it's not just the change in leaf colour that heralds the first signs of spring, our woodland flowers do too. Perhaps the earliest sign of spring that is most notable to us all is the sight of snowdrops poking their way through the frosted soil of woodlands. The snowdrop displays nodding, white flowers, each carried on a single stem. Snowdrops don't have petals and are actually composed of six white flower segments known as 'tepals'. #Snowdrop #Snowdrops #Wilder #Flora #Fauna #Spring #SignsOfSpring #Hampshire #IsleOfWight #WilderFuture #Snowdrops #Wildlife #Nature #WildlifeTrust #WilderHampshire #WilderWight #Flower #Tepals #Woodland #WoodlandFlowers #Conservation
