Our winter trip in Yukon was amazing! We stayed in a cozy cabin near Jade City, surrounded by mountains and a peaceful lake. No electricity or internet, but we had the best time talking by the fire, looking at stars, and cooking food together. Chopping logs was fun too! Although we don't keep bears here at the preserve, we have had them come through our rehab center (photos 5 & 6.) For this edition of #wildlifewednesday we thought it valuable to share a little bear knowledge to keep you safe and sound on the trails! Today, letโs chat about our furry neighbors: Black Bears ๐ค vs. Grizzly Bears ๐ป. ๐ Spot the Difference: Black Bears: Often black, but can be brown, cinnamon, or even white! Adult males can weigh up to 600lbs and stand up to 6 feet! Grizzly Bears: Usually have a distinctive hump on their shoulders and lighter fur with dark-tipped hairs giving them that grizzled appearance! Adult males can weigh up to 1000lbs and stand up to 7 feet!!!!!! Have you ever seen a cinnamon black bear or a spirit bear? What about a grizzly?? Share your photos and tag us! ๐๏ธ Habitat Hangouts: Black Bears: Love forests and are great climbers! You might spot them up a tree or rummaging through your backyard. Grizzly Bears: Prefer open spaces like meadows and river valleys. They're nature's gardeners, spreading seeds as they roam! โ ๏ธ Safety First! Things you can do to keep yourself safe on the trails: Make Noise: Sing a tune or chat with your hiking buddies to let bears know youโre around. Bear Spray: Always carry bear spray and know how to use it (Hint: Aim for the nose!). Keep Your Distance: Respect their space and give them a wide berth. No bear hugs, please! ๐ Fun Fact: Did you know black bears can run up to 50km (30 miles) per hour? ๐ฎ But remember, running from a bear isn't the solution! Stay calm, back away slowly, and make yourself look big by raising your arms. As part of the Trail Life Yukon adventure, boys and dads worked together to create Klondike sleds. Side-by-side, they built sleds, practiced fire-building, and prepared for cold-weather camping.
