These were possibly of his own family, though his works of well-to-do women breastfeeding and caring for children could also indicate that he had attended his mother on her rounds as a midwife. His work showed astute observation of the mundane details of everyday life while also functioning as well-ordered morality tales. BAROQUE 1614 Lorenz Strauch Self-Portrait at the Age of 60 (detail) This was the first time that the paper lampshade was requisitioned as a ruff. Strauch’s ruff, would have been made from around 17-18m of fine linen lawn around 25-30mm wide. It is larger than Anguissola’s on the previous page, of a size and style than had been popular since the 1580’s. Perhaps like me, Lorenz was still wearing clothes he had had for a good number of years. Like Albrecht Dürer, Lorenz Strauch was an artist and printmaker from Nüremburg. Strauch specialised in portraits and this self-portrait, with its prominent and informative cartouche and the tools of his trade clearly on display, suggest that this is a painting as marketing tool. I never cease learning from the Masters. This small oil on panel, is inspired by a detail from Nicolas Poussin’s beautiful Deposition. Despite not being religious, and despite often being overly mindblown by the excesses of some Baroque painting, I am in awe of Poussin’s work in this field. I have chosen to use a much more modernist approach to colour, palette, application and composition. Having said that, I wanted to maintain some of the static beauty of this most powerful of scenes. EN: Peasants at their Cottage Door is an oil on canvas painting from 1640s by the French Baroque artists Le Nain Brothers. In this painting the approach is unusually stark for the Le Nain brothers. Instead of a landscape background, there is a two-storey house belonging to the peasants, whose relative prosperity is indicated by the glass in the windows. The treatment of the low-life subject is given a totally unexpected dignity. The boy on the right and the old man next to him stare through us into space, and together they counterbalance the large area of pale stone of the house behind them. Into their expressions the artist have distilled a timelessness as far removed from anecdote as possible. V týdnu navštívili studenti druhého ročníku stavební veletrh na výstavišti, kde si prohlédli expozici řady škol a firem nabízejících i povrchové úpravy dřeva. Následně se vydali do nedalekého @muzeumstarobrnenskehoopatstvi, které – i když to není moc vidět – uchovává řadu cenných a krásných uměleckých děl. V klášteře si prohlédli tamní barokní knihovnu a skříně v sakristii z poloviny 18. století. @dominikmatus jim k tomu řekl řadu zajímavostí a upozornil na mnohé detaily, jelikož mobiliář jako student zkoumal. Jak knihovna, tak skříně v sakristii jsou totiž ukázkou mobiliáře, který vyrobila klášterní truhlárna pod vedením konvrše Bernarda Stöttnera v konventu při kostele sv. Tomáše na Moravském náměstí. Proč? Augustiniáni byli za josefinských reforem v 80. letech 18. století vypuzeni a byl jim jako náhrada nabídnut zrušený cisterciácký klášter na Starém Brně, kam se přestěhovali. Skříně jsou bohatě intarzované a doplňuje je sochařská výzdoba od Josefa Leonarda Webera. Původní prostory knihovny a sakristie doplňovala ještě freska od Josefa Tadeáše Rottera, ale na místě se dochoval pouze fragment a podobu víme jen díky částečnému odkryvu a kresbě. Dominik studentům ukázal kde všude došlo ke změnám při adaptaci mobiliáře v nových prostorách, upozornil na nekvalitní opravy dob minulých a vysvětlil motivy obsažené ve výzdobě. Se studenty si následně prohlédli baziliku a také expozici opatského muzea, kde si mohli mimo obrazy prohlédnout třeba kabinet s boulleho marketerií nebo psací stůl pokrytý želvovinou. Po cestě se ještě zastavili v kostele sv. BAROQUE 1610 Sofonisba Anguissola Self-portrait aged 78 (detail) Anguissola was a serial self-portraitist and painted this one when she was 78 having produced many others at different stages of her life at a time when this was not common practice. There is one unusual self-portrait which depicts another artist, her teacher Bernardino Campi, painting her portrait. In 1559, she became a lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Spain and continued to produce works while at the court of King Philip II until 1573. Like her previous self-portraits, she paints herself in modest dark clothing, showing her respectful and noble character but in this one she is a woman of learning sitting on a grand throne-like red velvet tasselled chair with a letter and book. She keeps her place in the book with her finger as she fixes the viewer’s gaze. An excellent example of Cossack Baroque architecture. The Chernihiv Collegium was established in 1700 by the decision of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. His reign is considered the 'golden age' of Ukrainian Baroque style. I particularly like the form of the dome support, shaped like a gear with serrated edges.
