I’m a fair weather gardener and it’s safe to say that the weather is not playing fair today. It’s so cold! Spring Onions 🌱🧅 Today I planted out my spring onion seedlings. I planted 8-10 seeds per module and then will harvest as the bigger ones are ready, leaving smaller ones to keep growing. These are 2 varieties, White Lisbon and a red variety that I cannot recall. I may have been a little over zealous putting in 80 modules cells. But if they grow well then there will be plenty to share with others. Another stunning double orange Russian heart tomato in a forgotten basket last week and then I never had time to post it for #tomatotuesday The plant is still producing and I love how there’s naturally late fruiting varieties amongst my big selection. If you are growing 70 varieties you don’t have to plan early mid and late fruiting varieties but if you are only growing a few it may be worthwhile to have a few of each to prolong the season. The lucfichoice bi colour pear, blue pear and sungolds are filling the baskets this month and happily still making fruit. Michael pollan/ mint julep is another great late tomato. Still plenty tomatoes coming in and I need to finish a nice big harvest after weeks away from the garden. I only picked tomatoes while busy with visitors but there’s limes, squash, lemons, the last dragon fruit and lots of peppers to pick still. The herbs and leaf crops are giving enough for meals too. Managed to complete the first #feedingfriday of the year - giving a thorough watering and liquid feed to all pots and planters. I know it’s been cold and wet but very little rain makes into those pots! Watered the tender annuals in the conservatory aka makeshift greenhouse (see story). ‼️ Gave the roses a spray with @uncletomsrosetonic as I’ve spotted the first signs of rose rust. Keep an eye out for this. Small bright orange dots on the leaves (both sides and I’ll post to stories). If you see it, snip the leaf off and discard. You don’t want to let rust take over your precious roses! Vigilance is key! Jag berättar från början (även om bilderna ligger i omvänd ordning;-)) Jag fick en förfrågan om att beskära ett Ingrid Marie äppelträd tidigt i våras, jag tänkte först tacka nej eftersom jag var fullbokad, men åkte & tittade & sa ”ja” (är det typiskt mig eller? Kan inte stå emot en trevlig kund där jag dessutom ser potentialen i trädet…) Däremot uppstod inte luckan i schemat förrän idag. Trädet har varit hårt beskuret, sedan skjutit rejält med vattenskott som fått växa på sig. Jag gallrade friskt men behöll höjden i kronan. Eventuellt skär jag någon mer stor gren nästa år & då kan jag förmodligen även börja skära ner viss höjd i kronan. På tomten stod även en gigantisk idegran. Önskemålet hos frun var att klippa den äggformad, vilket är svårt om man har den sortens idegran som strävar mot att bli vid upptill. Jag hade en annan tanke, nämligen att stamma upp denna gigant, & sedan forma kronan. Frun var tveksam till ingreppet men maken var på hugget: - Jo, nu låter vi trädgårdsmästaren göra som hon tycker blir bäst, hon vet ju vad hon gör. Du ser ju hur bra äppelträdet blev! Det här blir ett lyft, vi behöver lite förnyelse! & så hände det sig att jag fick fria tyglar! Konstnärlig & hantverksmässig frihet är bland det bästa jag vet… När jag var klar såg högen med bortsågat material ut som X3 av vad som blev kvar av idegranen(!) Nu mer proportionerlig i förhållande till sin placering & betydligt enklare att hantera framöver. Bra redskap är mycket värt & gör arbetet både enklare & roligare, eller hur? OBSTGARTEN Auch im Obstgarten hat sich schon viel getan. Allerdings war ich noch nicht wieder im Garten, weiß also nicht, wie es denn derzeit mit den Früchten aussieht. Ich habe Angst um meine Pfirsiche. Ob ich nach einer Nacht mit -2 Grad noch Früchte am Baum haben werde? 🫣 Auch Johannisbeeren, Himbeeren und Mirabellen hängen schon an den Bäumen. Und zum ersten Mal habe ich auch Stachelbeeren gesichtet. Und auch die Kirschbäume hängen voll. Ich bin gespannt, wie es nach der kalten Nacht aussieht. Es wäre zu schade, wenn alles abgefroren wäre 🥶 Ob es viele Totalausfälle nach den kalten Nächten gibt, besonders beim Obst, würde mich schon interessieren. Wie sieht es denn bei euch aus? In the week that our first tomato ripened and we planted our tomatoes into the polytunnel, it suddenly feels like tomato season has officially begun. If you are wondering how we have our first ripe tomatoes in April, it is because we grow micro dwarf varieties (30cm tall or less) indoors under grow lights. Doing this means you can have ripe tomatoes at any time of year. If you want to try doing the same, Vilma is the micro tomato variety that we currently offer, with more on the way for next season.

Garlic and Onions are coming along well this year, although some of the garlic is starting to get rust and the snails are all over them. As it has been a very wet year, I am hoping that the bulbs have not gotten soft under the ground. Will have to wait and see. It’s a day to celebrate “P’s” today… First, the P-for-pinks at their peak just now. I can’t decide which I love more: the blousy - frankly tarty - Tulipa Angelique or the lax-stemmed and languid T. clusiana peppermintstick. Then there’s the apple tree, which I grafted a decade ago from a nameless gnarly old tree in my last garden, today smothered in blossom under a beautiful blue sky. It is growing in the same distorted shape that its parent did, its leader veering off to the horizontal. This branch on the original tree was the favourite of our elderly tabby Freddy, who enjoyed many an afternoon of bird-watching from his perch. At its feet are the first of the strawberry flowers, which brings me to P for pangs of pleasure. A clutch of warm eggs still thrills me when I toddle down the garden first thing in the morning to feed the hens. They always, always get a delighted “THANK you, girls!” involuntarily and out loud, thereby confirming the neighbours’ belief that I am a complete lunatic. (And if you need further proof of this, the pristine potting station also made me yelp with surprised delight this morning, and it was me who tidied it last thing yesterday). Lastly is P for perseverance. After an entire lifetime of failing to produce a single decent carrot at home or at the allotment, I am giving it one last go… The bed has been sieved, for god’s sake, and pre-watered, and environmesh will cover it from seed sowing this afternoon, undisturbed until harvest time. Scarifying a lawn is simply the process of removing dead thatch (the brown material found beneath the green grass blades). A small amount of thatch is a good thing in lawns, but in large quantities, it can inhibit the growth of new grass, prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots, and encourage moss to form. Seriously…. If anyone sees me so much as glancing at a Dahlia catalogue, or website, hit me over the head with an empty plant pot…… if you can find one that doesn’t have a Dahlia in it! .. 6 new varieties this year and no space to store them when Winter comes around again 🤪🤷♂️🤣 .. All the Dahlias are out of the shed and crammed into the GH 🥳 .. I had a few losses, mostly the very small tubers that rarely over winter well but always worth a try, and a few rescues that were showing signs of rot or vine weevil grub damage…. ones in peat free compost that remained very damp/wet (ideal for Vine Weevil grubs) despite trying to dry them out last Autumn. .. However, the vast majority have come through and the signs are positive, many are already growing well 😅 .. I now need the sun to stick around and the temperatures to rise because I usually evict all the pots from the GH at the beginning of May. There is little chance of that happening right now because it’s just too cold and there are some that haven’t started to appear yet, so I wouldn’t want to put those outside as they still need the warmth of the GH. ..
