Frozen in time: Colombian town's unexplained mummies In a small town high in the Colombian Andes, Clovisnerys Bejarano kneels before a glass box holding the petrified corpse of her mother, who died 30 years ago, but looks as if she might just be asleep. Torres was interred in a vault in the San Bernardo municipal cemetery in 1993. Exhumed in 2001 -- as is customary to make space for new bodies -- her relatives found her still with hair, nails and much of her tissue unspoilt. It came as no major surprise. Dozens of mummified bodies have come out of the vaults since the first one in 1963. Despite numberous attempts by experts to explain the phenomenon -- which has also been observed in countries such as Mexico and Italy -- the reason for the spontaneous mummification in San Bernardo has never been pinned down. There is no clear pattern to the mummifications: those who are involved are of all different ages when they died, and no particular gender or body type predominates. Many believe the answer must lie in the burial vaults. Relatives of the mummified corpses must authorize their display in the museum. Despite being short-lived, the pro-Palestine encampment at Northeastern University was the scene of successful resilience on its first night on April 25, 2024. Only several hours, the Boston Police had surrounded the newly erected encampment in what appeared would have been a quick sweet of tent and handcuffed students. Defiant and determined, as the campus movements have shown the world, encampment protesters held their ground. In a shocking turn of events, especially given the riot police crackdown at the Emerson College encampment early in the morning, Boston police withdrew. The first night brought a sense of calm and ease to a group of interracial and interfaith coalitions demanding Northeastern disclose all financial ties with Israeli firms involved in the war in Gaza, then divest and denounce the Israeli war campaign that has killed over 34,000 Palestinians since October 2023. Together, students held a Seder and Muslim students prayed. Filipino farmers struggle as drought and heatwave hits More than half of the Philippines' provinces, including Nueva Ecija, are in drought as El Nino exacerbates hot and dry conditions typical for March, April and May. Temperatures have sizzled around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the country in recent days, with the heat index -- what the temperature feels like, taking into account humidity -- in one area hitting 53C. In the Philippines, which ranks among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the upcoming harvest is likely to be "below average", the UN has warned. Crop losses are estimated at more than four billion pesos ($69 million) and farmers face further hardship if the drought doesn't break soon. Many farmers in Nueva Ecija normally count on the Pantabangan Dam for irrigation, but levels have fallen nearly 50 metres (164 feet) and it no longer reaches their fields. Some farmers switched from rice to vegetables, which need less water, but even those are dying because the groundwater is drying up. As dam levels drop, some urban areas have been left without water.
