Ο Μέγας Αλέξανδρος στην έρημο της Γεδρωσίας. Ο Μ. Αλέξανδρος (356-323 π.Χ.) αφού είχε κατακτήσει σχεδόν όλη την Οικουμένη και είχε φτάσει στις Ινδίες, στα όρια του τότε γνωστού κόσμου, εκεί στις Ινδίες αποφάσισε (μετά από ανταρσία του στρατεύματος) να μην προχωρήσει βαθύτερα στη χώρα των Ινδιών παρόλο που ο ίδιος το επιθυμούσε. Έτσι, οργανώθηκε το ταξίδι επιστροφής από τις Ινδίες στη Βαβυλώνα, πολιτικό και διοικητικό κέντρο της Αυτοκρατορίας του. Κατά τη διάρκεια της πορείας της επιστροφής ο Αλέξανδρος και μέρος του στρατεύματός του τον Οκτώβριο του 325 π.Χ. εισήλθε στην έρημο της Γεδρωσίας και άρχισε να τη διασχίζει· εκεί ίσως βρέθηκε στην πιο δύσκολη στιγμή της εκστρατείας του. Οι κλιματολογικές συνθήκες στην περιοχή αυτή ήταν τόσο αντίξοες όπου το στράτευμα του φάνηκε να αποδεκατίζεται. Ο αφιλόξενος αυτός τόπος φαίνεται ότι στάθηκε ο πιο φονικός αντίπαλος του Αλεξάνδρου. Αφού είχε προχωρήσει βαθιά μέσα στην έρημο το στράτευμά του μαστιζόταν από την έλλειψη τροφής και νερού. Μέσα σε πραγματικά δυσχερέστατες συνθήκες ο Αλέξανδρος για ακόμη μία φορά έδειξε την απέραντη υψηλοφροσύνη του. Όπως περιγράφει ο ιστορικός Αρριανός, όταν κάποιοι στρατιώτες που έψαχναν για νερό κατάφεραν και βρήκαν μια ελάχιστη ποσότητα, την οποία έβαλαν μέσα σε ένα κράνος, αμέσως έτρεξαν να το προσφέρουν στο βασιλιά τους, τον Αλέξανδρο, σαν ένα σπουδαίο λάφυρο. (Αρριανός, 6.26.2: ἐν δὲ τούτῳ τῶν ψιλῶν τινας κατὰ ζήτησιν ὕδατος ἀποτραπέντας ἀπὸ τῆς στρατιᾶς εὑρεῖν ὕδωρ συλλελεγμένον ἔν τινι χαράδρᾳ οὐ βαθείᾳ, ὀλίγην καὶ φαύλην πίδακα· καὶ τοῦτο οὐ χαλεπῶς συλλέξαντας σπουδῇ ἰέναι παρ᾽ Ἀλέξανδρον, ὡς μέγα δή τι ἀγαθὸν φέροντας· ὡς δὲ ἐπέλαζον ἤδη, ἐμβαλόντας ἐς κράνος τὸ ὕδωρ προσενεγκεῖν τῷ βασιλεῖ) . Όταν λοιπόν ο Αλέξανδρος πήρε στα χέρια του το κράνος με το νερό δεν το ήπιε, όπως θα περίμεναν όλοι! Αντίθετα! Το σήκωσε ψηλά ώστε να το βλέπουν όλοι και το έριξε κάτω! La tribu de Kalash es un grupo étnico que vive en el norte de Pakistán, en la región de Chitral. Los kalash son conocidos por su cultura y religión únicas, que han sobrevivido durante siglos y son muy diferentes a las de las comunidades musulmanas que los rodean. Cuando alguien de la tribu de Kalash muere, se lleva a cabo un ritual de velatorio que dura varios días. Durante este tiempo, los miembros de la tribu se reúnen para llorar y honrar al fallecido. También se llevan a cabo ceremonias religiosas para garantizar que el espíritu del fallecido llegue al más allá de manera segura. En el primer día del velatorio, se corta el pelo y las uñas del fallecido, y se viste su cuerpo con ropa nueva. Luego se coloca el cuerpo en una habitación especial, donde los miembros de la tribu pueden visitarlo y lamentar su pérdida. También se tocan tambores y se cantan canciones tristes para honrar al fallecido. Finalmente, se lleva a cabo el funeral y se entierra al fallecido en un cementerio en las afueras de la aldea. Learning is most of my addiction, and always has been. Our world has some amazing wonders that show today’s humanity that we/now might not be the pinnacle of human evolution. One of the sites that continues to amaze me is the #baalbek #temple in Baalbek, #lebanon 😮 _ This UNESCO World Heritage site 50 miles east/northeast of Beirut, Lebanon 🇱🇧 contains some of the largest #megalith stones ever discovered. The largest megalith measures 64x20x18 feet and weighs an estimated 1650 tons! The megalithic stones that make up the base of the #templeofjupiter range in excess of 100 to 300+ tons. Scientists & historians still have no idea how these stones were moved into place as they dwarf the largest stones used to construct the #greatpyramid 😮 Inhabited as early as 9000 BCE Baalbek was an important pilgrimage site of worship for the sky god #baal & his consort #astarte, the Queen of Heaven in Phoenician religion. In 332 BCE #alexaderthegreat renamed this place #heliopolis “the City of the Sun” as it was called when Rome annexed the city in 64 BCE. During this time many of the original structures dedicated to Gods of the region were removed, and new temples were built upon the immense original foundation starting in 16 CE. Emperor Constantine Christianized this pagan site during his reign and the buildings (except the temple of Jupiter that was torn down by Theodosius the 1st after making Christianity the state religion) was used as Christian churches until Muslim Arabs claimed the site in 637 CE. In the following years added Christian buildings were demolished, and a Mosque was built among the remained Roman temples. The Byzantine empire sacked the city in 748 & 975 CE, and the city later came under the control of the Ottoman Empire. At this point Baalbek is mostly abandoned and left to crumble until 1898 CE when German Emperor Wilhelm the 2nd visited and sent #archeologists to begin preserving the site. _ Many people, empires, and religions have called Baalbek home, but much of the history of this region prior to Alexander the Great’s conquest was wiped from history. Who set the foundation of the temples, and how did they place these megalithic stones?
