In 1972, a 22-year-old kid whipped his Volkswagen Squareback out of a Durham, North Carolina, driveway and drove west into the pocket-size village of Peñasco. The kid’s name was Alex Harris, and he was moving to Peñasco on assignment to take pictures of the village elders, or ancianos, for a book. How could the kid, a fish-out-of-water gringo in a traditional Hispano town, have known that his days in New Mexico would turn into years? Or that the pictures he would make would end up in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Center, and the New Mexico Museum of Art? And how could he possibly have guessed that half a century later he’d be asked to return to revisit his old haunts and flickering memories, and to take a few more pictures of this place? Cruising into Peñasco on a clear blue morning this past spring, the familiar landmarks and soft morning light send him to the past. “That’s where I used to live,” he says, nodding to a two-story home on the main drag. “It was a nice little adobe house. The rent was less than $100 a month.” He went on to a career marked by prestigious fellowships and accolades. But back then? Back then he was a know-nothing greenhorn who accidentally set that nice little adobe house on fire while trying to build a darkroom. Alex hadn’t been back to the area in nearly five years—by far the most time he’d spent away since he nearly burned down his Peñasco rental. Now, as I sat with Alex in a small clearing above his old home, that Thomas Wolfe line “You can’t go home again” came to mind. We are delighted to present the transcendent images of Cordelia Johnson Stanwood (1865 – 1958), American ornithologist and wildlife photographer, one of the first woman to make an intensive study of bird life in North America. Before undertaking her bird studies, Stanwood worked for nearly twenty years as a school teacher and principal. Following an emotional and physical collapse, her career came to an abrupt end in 1905, and at the age of 39 she returned to her family homestead in rural Maine to recreate her life. Stanwood immersed herself in a self-directed, intensive study of nature and birds. For the following five decades, Stanwood kept detailed field notes and for many years photographed the active birdlife unfolding within an approximately three mile radius of her home. Using a bulky large format camera and a blind which she improvised, she took hundreds of pictures on glass negatives, and submitted numerous papers to scientific journals. Stanwood later donated the bulk of her glass plate negatives to the Acadia National Park. In September 2022, Margaret Sartor @wherewefindourselves and Alex Harris @ourstrangenewland, photographers, curators, printers, and authors with profound experience in approaching vintage and often damaged glass negatives, travelled to Maine (see link in bio for Sartor’s and Harris’ extraordinary work on Hugh Mangum).
