@dead.pioneers is at @themusicdistrict in Fort Collins for the weekend, working on material that will comprise the 2nd record. This place is pretty amazing, a compound of sorts (I keep looking for a cult leader), wherein they do a lot of educational work with kids plus provide resources to local and touring bands. We’re in a very nice house that has a fully functioning practice space, right on College Avenue. I always trip out when I come back to the Fort—I lived here for 9 years, but it has changed in many ways—still have a lot of great friends up here. I’m incorporating a POG into my pedal chain, trying to work some new sounds into the mix. I tried one when @brianyrake and I jammed with @ralphspight and Larry earlier in the year—it’s fun. Working with @greggdeal , @leetesche , @joshua_rivera , and @zweygoat is a pleasure—we did half a day yesterday and basically have four new songs. We came in with material to work with, but stoked on how easy and fun it is to work with these guys. So, I mean, with a full day today, we should have another 8—I’m sure that’s how it’ll work out, no problems or wrinkles. That’s basically how my life’s gone: you know, perfect and easy. Algiers: There Is No Year (2020 Matador - Cloudy Clear vinyl + Blue Transparent Flexi-Disc) Nel 2015 ci aveva particolarmente colpito l’album di esordio degli Algiers, un trio formato ad Atlanta, Georgia dal cantante Franklin James Fisher, insieme al chitarrista Lee Tesche e al bassista Ryan Mahan. In realtà i tre si dividevano diversi altri strumenti infilando nelle 11 tracce del disco una serie di suoni estremamente interessanti tra battiti di mani e chitarre sferzanti, tra ritmi industrial ipnotici e scuri arricchiti da un incedere vocale gospel e un impianto new wave. Due anni dopo, l’atteso seguito intitolato The Underside Of Power fortunatamente aveva confermato tutto quello che di buono si era detto della band, che ha reso il suo suono ancora più poderoso grazie all’inserimento in pianta stabile dell’ex Bloc Party, Matt Tong, dietro ai tamburi. Era quindi molto atteso il terzo lavoro della band, quello che doveva darci l’esatta entità di una crescita esponenziale. Il quartetto di Atlanta non ha affatto deluso le aspettative, anzi, forse con There Is No Year gli Algiers mettono sui solchi la loro versione più matura e consapevole. Il loro mettere in primo piano l’impegno sociale anticapitalista, antirazzista e antifascista li ha resi in qualche modo unici. La potente ed empatica voce soul di Fisher unita ad un impianto musicale che unisce post punk e gospel con precisi innesti di elettronica ha reso questo gruppo uno dei più importanti degli ultimi anni per emozioni e contenuti. @algierstheband “The Underside of Power” - @matadorrecords The most underrated/overlooked band I can think of. These dudes have been putting out solid records for over a decade, and I don’t even know anybody else who has heard of them (that I haven’t shown, at least. I don’t mean this as a brag, more as a tragedy). Politically radical, artistically complex/skilled, they are my dream come true. I think I just happened upon them by some Bandcamp e-mail one time right before their debut album dropped. If you’ve been around a while, you know I was finally able to see them last year, and I loved it. I have a feeling that’ll be the only time I get to see them. Check them out, either way. Great stuff, too often overlooked. If I’m not enough, they have the Zach de la Rocha seal of approval.

Here are the ten that caught my ears. _ 10. Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving - 'Oscillating Forest' Will take you approximately six seconds to realize these woods ain't too friendly but it you're going in anyways! 9. Oxbow - 'Love's Holiday' Frustratingly overlooked but always on-point, Oxbow continue perfecting their croony, evocative and strange craft. 8. Fire-Toolz - 'I am upset because I see something that is not there.' There has to be a method to the madness that has been once again unleashed by Chicago's finest musical witch scientist. Right? If not, even better! 7. Cicada The Burrower - 'Blight Witch Regalia' Like the transformative process that inspired it, many strange, beautiful and unhinged moments lie in 'Blight Witch Regalia', always comprehensible but never fully. Actually unique. 6. Yellow Eyes - 'Master's Murmur' Never was that keen on the band but these clangy, rural, alien murmurs proved to be much more alluring than anticipated. 5. Steven Wilson - 'The Harmony Codex' As someone who's gotten pretty solid at killing the buzz lately, Wilson's most recent work feels and sounds like a step in the right direction but it's still not on that level many love him for, lyricism and all aside. 4. PoiL, Junko Ueda - 'PoiL / Ueda' With a loose grip built upon intuition, trust and skills, the collaboration between French Zeuhlers and satsuma-biwa master delivered big time. 3. Algiers - 'Shook' A fittingly potent and volatile concoction of sounds, words and ideas that call for radical change but through unity and empathy. 2. Young Fathers - 'Heavy Heavy' With their infectious and seamless mixture of genres, Scotland's trio cover a lot of ground but never forget to have fun, a LOT of it! And so shall you. 1. Neil Gaiman & FourPlay Quartet - 'Signs Of Life' Few have control over words like Neil Gaiman and on his musical debut this is further emphasized with brilliant soundscapes courtesy of an amazing Australian stringed quartet. Instant classic.

Algiers Shook. I saw Algiers again last week in Šibenik. And they were great. Their last album isn't their strongest but it rocks strongly nevertheless. Zach De La Rocha is one of the guests and they are always politically engaged. If you are not familiar with the band, imagine postpunk band playing combination of hip hop, punk, electronica and pop.

Algiers au Molotov. Le groupe d'Atlanta, nous propose depuis quelques années déjà une protest song passionnante qui carbure à l'étonnant mélange de post punk, jazz, blues, soul, rap et gospel. Une fusion improbable qui s'avère hautement réjouissante et explosive en live. Vendredi soir, ils étaient de passage au Molotov pour un set mémorable qui a tenu toutes ses promesses et fait grimper la température de la salle aussi efficacement qu'un dérèglement climatique. Impossible de bouder son plaisir même si on peut se questionner sur la confidentialité d'un tel groupe. ALGIERS .... ce groupe est un ovni...👽🆙 🛸dualité du discours du groupe, qui entend marier l’aspect unificateur de la musique gospel avec la confrontation et le nihilisme du post-punk.Musique sombre et inquiete ou les fantômes de la ségrégation et des dérèglements sociaux nous explosenr dans gueule ! parfois en saturation ou redescente verd un "calme" faussement christique! Mercoledì sera sono stato al Monk per vedere gli Algiers che hanno fatto uno show davvero esplosivo. Indiscutibilmente il migliore concerto che ho visto questo mese.
