Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) fue una gran mujer norteaméricana que tuvimos el honor que aterrizará en Caripito, estado Monagas, Venezuela, para hacerle mantenimiento y reabastecer su avión en el aeropuerto de Cachipo, un mes antes de desaparecer en el Pacífico en 1937, cuando trataba de realizar su proeza de realizar el primer viaje aéreo alrededor del mundo. Earhart, norteamericana de 39 años, alta y delgada, rubia y de pelo muy corto, al llegar fue agasajada por los norteamericanos de la Standard Oil en el Club de Campo Norte en Caripito. El propio gerente, Henry Liman, se encargó de hacer llegar a El Universal y otros periódicos de Caracas, las fotografías que le hizo junto a su avión. La exquisita cena, en la casa de Liman, fue preparada por el cocinero chino del Club Americano. Su visita causa mucha sensación ya que nunca antes en Caripito habían visto a una mujer en pantalones. Destacada aviadora que logro varios récords, en 1928 fue la primera mujer en cruzar el Océano Atlántico en avión y 1932 se convierte en la primera mujer en volar el Atlántico piloteando un avión sola. También fue una de las más conocidas diseñadoras de Estados Unidos. Su nombre era una marca muy cotizada en ropa femenina en las tiendas Macy's de Nueva York. Sin lugar a duda Caripito tuvo el honor de tener de visita a esta gran mujer norteaméricana, que su nombre estaba entre personajes famosos de los Estados Unidos en esta época. Incluso se hizo una película "Amelia" en 2009, basada en la vida de la legendaria piloto estadounidense Amelia Earhart, protagonizada por Hilary Swank, como Earhart junto a un elenco que incluye a Richard Gere, Christopher Eccleston y Ewan McGregor. Em 21 de maio de 1932, cinco anos após Charles Lindbergh se consagrar como o primeiro piloto a completar um voo solo e sem paradas sobre o Oceano Atlântico, a aviadora Amelia Earhart se tornou a primeira mulher a repetir o feito, pousando na Irlanda após voar sobre o Atlântico Norte. Earhart viajou mais de 3 mil quilômetros, saindo de Terra Nova e Labrador, no Canadá, realizando o percurso em menos de 15 horas. Diferentemente de Charles Lindbergh, Earhart já era conhecida do público antes de seu voo solo transatlântico. Em 1928, como membro de uma tripulação de três pessoas, ela se tornou a primeira mulher a cruzar o Atlântico em uma aeronave. Apesar de sua única função durante o percurso tenha sido manter os registros do avião, ela ganhou fama nacional, e a população dos Estados Unidos ficou fascinada pela cativante e modesta jovem. Ela recebeu a distinção “Distinguished Flying Cross”, do Congresso dos EUA, pelo seu voo solo transatlântico. Em 1935, em um primeiro voo do tipo, ela voou sozinha de Wheeler Field, em Honolulu, no Havaí, para Oakland, na Califórnia, recebendo um prêmio de US$10.000. Dois anos depois, ela tentou, junto com o copiloto Frederick J. Noonan, dar a volta ao mundo, mas seu avião despareceu perto de Howland Island, no Pacífico Sul, em 2 de julho de 1937. Happy birthday to Amelia Mary Earhart. Born July 24, 1897; she would be 125 today! Unfortunately she disappeared on a flight on July 2, 1937. Her body was never found and she was declared dead January 5, 1939.
