This striking bird with its contrast plumage of black, white, and orange is Venezuela’s national bird. - The second illustration is the Rufous hornero, Argentina’s national bird. Known too as the red ovenbird, the Rufous hornero has a wide habitat range that includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The nickname “the red ovenbird” comes from their large, thick clay “oven-like” nests, which can be found in fence posts, telephone poles, and trees. - The third illustration is the red-necked Aracari, a member of the toucan family and can be found in both Bolivia and Brazil. This beautiful bird is endangered due to the deforestation of the Amazon basin. - The fourth is the ruby-throated hummingbird of Turtle Island. The hummingbird is a very important figure to Turtle Island’s Indigenous Peoples as various representations that include beauty, creation, healing, and wisdom, in which case, it’s important to note that hummingbirds’ identities may differ throughout Turtle Island. The reason why I chose these specific birds is because of the past histories and current events of both the Indigenous lands and settler countries the birds naturally reside in. At times I like to pair my artwork with music that will compliment each other. @thehallucination is one of the most beloved Indigenous music artists of our lifetime. A Collared Aracari enjoying the evening snack. We saw the bird in multiple places on top of huge trees, however after a small rain, this guy came down for a snack and perched on a near by fruit tree!! Aracaris are of 14 types and are considered as a sub species of Toucans! Out of 14, this one got a red circle on the neck which is why it named as "collared". Like other toucans, the collared aracari is brightly marked and has a large bill. Adults are 38 to 41 cm (15 to 16 in) long and weigh 175 to 250 g (6.2 to 8.8 oz). Males and females have the same coloration of the bill and plumage but the females bill is shorter than the males. Habt ihr schon die grünen Scheiben im Totenkopfaffenhaus bemerkt? 🟩 Hier ist tatsächlich kein Farbeimer explodiert, sondern die Farbe ist zum Schutz vor Verletzungen angebracht worden. Denn vor knapp einer Woche haben die beiden Küken unserer Grünarassaris ihre Nesthöhle verlassen und sind jetzt in ihrem Gehege auf Entdeckungstour. 🐣 Über den Nachwuchs bei dieser kleinen Tukanart freuen wir uns ganz besonders, es sind die ersten Küken unseres Zuchtpaares und auch in anderen Zoos gelingt die Nachzucht dieser schönen Vögel nicht immer. Arassaris brüten in der Natur in alten Spechthöhlen oder morschen Baumhöhlen. Diese höhlen sie noch weiter aus und kommen dadurch erst richtig in Paarungsstimmung. Um dieses Verhalten bei uns im Zoo zu ermöglichen, haben unsere Tierpfleger die Höhle der Grünarassaris mit Sägespänen befüllt, die dann umgehend von den Vögeln aus der Höhle entfernt wurden - und auch die anschließende Paarung war offensichtlich von Erfolg gekrönt. Als kleine Tukane haben unsere Küken auch schon einen überproportional großen Schnabel, der aber noch weiter wachsen und auch noch etwas bunter werden wird. Dieser besteht aus Knochenlamellen und ist trotz seiner Größe enorm leicht, innen ist ein Tukanschnabel nämlich hohl und dient so wahrscheinlich der Temperaturregulation. 🌡️ Wir sind sehr stolz auf diesen besonderen Zuchterfolg und wünschen Euch viel Spaß beim Beobachten der kleinen Vogelfamilie! Zanetti 🇧🇷 Esse estava no topo da lista dos tucanos que eu queria ver. Depois de não encontrá-lo em Pernambuco, minha esperança restava em Murici. Já havíamos visto o outro Araçari e ouvimos o Tucano, encontrar esse agora seria sorte demais. Mas a sorte tava grande naquele dia. Depois de voltar da mata, estávamos curtindo a tarde na pousada, até que avistei duas aves pousando numa árvore perto da piscina. Vi logo que eram araçaris, mas bem menores que os de bico-branco. Quando identifiquei que eram os de bico-riscado corri para avisar meu irmão e buscar minha câmera, que estava no chalé. Depois de muita correria e retomada de fôlego, conseguimos! 🇬🇧 This was at the top of the list of toucans I wanted to see. After not finding it in Pernambuco, my hope remained in Murici. We had already seen the other aracari and heard the toucan, finding this one now would be too lucky. But luck was with me that day. After returning from the forest, we were enjoying an afternoon walk at the inn, until I saw two birds perching in a tree near the pool. I immediately saw that they were aracaris, but much smaller than the black-necked ones.
