BAROQUE 1647 Salvator Rosa Self-Portrait (detail) An Italian Baroque artist who was also a successful printmaker, poet, actor, and writer of satirical plays. Successful enough to pick and choose what he did, his wild, unorthodox mythological scenes and landscapes influenced the later 19th century Romantic painters such as Turner. In Rome he had great success with his plays mocking the comedies performed under the direction of Bernini, however this also made him enemies and around 1640 he accepted an invitation to relocate to Florence, where he stayed until 1649. Once there, Rosa sponsored a combination of studio and salon of poets, playwrights, and painters—the so-called Accademia dei Percossi (Academy of the Stricken). After Halloween in 2020, I picked up a cheap plastic skull from the G&T discount store in Winton and this has proved a useful prop featuring in several self-portraits. Skulls are traditional symbols of mortality and Rosa has driven this point home depicting himself inscribing the skull with the words ‘Behold, whither, eventually’ in Greek. Foregrounding his mysterious figures within atmospheric backgrounds, lush with amber hues that evoke 17th century Dutch paintings, his characters exist in an unidentifiable time and place. Born in 1967 in Helensburgh, Scotland, Christopher Orr graduated from the @royalcollegeofart and the Jordanston College in Dundee. He has been exhibited widely including at @hauserwirth Zurich, Kunsthalle Baseland and at the Royal Scottish Academy as well as the Tate Triennial. Witam Was w Dzień Płytki Azulejo 💠🙂 Azulejos to moja pasja, choć moje zainteresowanie tymi płytkami zaczęło się z zupełnie innej strony, bo od meksykańskich kafelków Talavera🇲🇽. Dopiero później zaczełam zgłębiać portugalskie i hiszpańskie wzory kafelków. Co jest jednak w mojej pasji niezmienne to miłość do kolorów 🌈 . Uwielbiam odważne połączenia barw, intensywne odcienie czy nieoczywiste projekty. I choć nie raz zachwycę się kobatem na tle śnieżnobiałej bieli, to jednak numerem jeden na mojej ceramiczno-zdobniczej drodze pozostają Kolory. Na zdjeciach zobaczcie moje ostatnie eksperymenty, zarówno z kolorem jak i z techniką. Są to panele/obrazy z czterech płytek. Baroque 1646 Johannes Gumpp Self-Portrait (detail) The Austrian artist Johannes Gumpp was the son of an architect, Christoph Gumpp, and is unusual as his self-portrait is his only known work. He did two versions, this circular one and a rectangular version. These form an interesting addition to the history of self-portraiture and are considered significant enough to be hanging in the Vasari Corridor at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence that contains the most significant collection of self-portraits in the world. At first glance this is an unprepossessing work with a great void of blackness dominating the centre of the work. However, it is worth greater scrutiny. It shows Gumpp from the back: we see his face reflected in a mirror and in the unfinished self-portrait that he is working on. Perhaps Gumpp is referencing Carracci’s painting of a self-portrait painting from over forty years earlier as he also includes a cat and dog in his composition. Here though, hasn’t simply depicted the finished painting. He has decided to add himself in the act of painting. Gumpp’s unusual composition has echoes down the ages. Twenty years later, Vermeer will feature a back view of himself seen working in his famous work The Art of Painting. Palm Tree State of Mind🌴 During my travels, I remember speaking to a fellow tourist about a palm tree and how their nature inspired thoughtful meaning on how to approach one’s life Already holding a deep appreciation for trees itself, I realized that out of all the trees, I would have likened myself to a palm tree Reason being because palm trees are known for bejng tenacious, self-sustaining, and generous offering shelter and food to anyone in need I admire how come rain or shine, irregardless of the ever changing seasons, it still stands tall and strong in the face of adversity or the absence of it.
