Her use of bold and vibrant colour and intuitive form creation result in works of art that are multi layered and the viewer will continue to be drawn in time after time. ‘My starting point for making a painting is the desire to use and see a particular colour, in quantity, poured and stained onto an un-primed canvas. This action paves the way for further colours, mixed and applied with fast and intuitive decision making. I use all manner of materials and take a maverick approach to the rules of combining different solvent-based mediums. Often, I will start with an already marked canvas – one that I’ve stitched together, using old canvas remnants from the floor which I lay down to catch the drips from previous paintings. This gives the canvas some history and a reference point for me – like a signpost in an overgrown path. The physicality of the stitched canvas and the stuff of paint, the mixing and discovery of different mediums and textures and pigments, the rejuvenation of a congealed, obscure colour in a discarded paint pot, bringing new possibilities and unintentional finds, is what keeps me captivated. Today is #InternationalDanceDay - a day invented to bring people together across the globe with the common language of dance - and marks the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet. Throughout his career, the late artist Donald Hamilton Fraser created a large body of graceful chalk and wash drawings of dancers alongside the landscape works he’s best recognised for. He maintained a lifelong fascination for classical ballet, spending hours observing the daily rehearsals of the English National Ballet, attending productions of both domestic and international ballet companies, as well as writing as a critic in magazines on the subject. TODAY IS THE BIRTHDAY OF THE EXTRAORDINARY YVES KLEIN. Yves Klein, born On April 28 1928 in Nice, had as a first vocation to be a judoka. It was only back in Paris, in 1954, that he dedicated himself fully to art, setting out on his ‘adventure into monochrome’. Animated by a quest to ‘liberate colour from the prison that is the line’, Yves Klein directed his attention to the monochrome which, to him, was the only form of painting that allowed to ‘make visible the absolute’. By choosing to express feeling rather than figurative form, Yves Klein moved beyond ideas of artistic representation, conceiving the work of art instead as a trace of communication between the artist and the world; invisible truth made visible. His works, he said, were to be ‘the ashes of his art’, traces of that which the eye could not see. Yves Klein’s practice revealed of new way of conceptualising the role of the artist, conceiving his whole life as an artwork. According to him, beauty existed everywhere, but in a state of invisibility. His task was to to capture beauty wherever it might be found, in matter as in air. The artist used blue as the vehicle for his quest to capture immateriality and the infinite. His celebrated bluer-than-blue hue, soon to be named ‘IKB’ (International Klein Blue), radiates colourful waves, engaging not only the eyes of the viewer, but in fact allowing us see with our souls, to read with our imaginations. From monochromes, to the void, to his ‘technique of living brushes’ or ‘Anthropometry’; by way of his deployment of nature’s elements in order to manifest their creative life-force; and his use of gold as a portal to the absolute; Yves Klein developed a ground-breaking practice that broke down boundaries between conceptual art, sculpture, painting, and performance. Our friends across the pond in the US are celebrating #nationalsuperheroday today - created in 1995 by Marvel employees to celebrate their favourite superhero. So we thought it would be fitting to feature one of Peter Blake’s recent silkscreen releases, the epically titled ‘Marcel Duchamp’s World Tour, The Tower Ballroom, Blackpool - Superheroes Convention - A Parody’. In this complex and detailed work, a team of superheroes unite to create a room of chaos and crime-fighting camaraderie. In his World Tour series, Blake pays homage to French artist Marcel Duchamp, who paved the way for modern and contemporary art movements such pop art, installation art and conceptual art. Duchamp’s belief that anything an artist did could be art became an integral influence in Blake’s own work, and therefore Sir Peter has hidden a figure of Duchamp within each print in the series for eagle-eyed viewers to seek out. Emma Talbot’s practice draws from personal experiences and it is the mining of her own autobiography that becomes relatable to those looking in from the outside. Particularly fascinated with contemporary concerns such as our relationship with technology, through her work Talbot negotiates the twentieth and twenty–first century struggle of the individual in life, in the family, at home and in society. Using drawing as a starting point, her paintings are articulated freehand as she applies the paint directly onto silk and paper. Micro memories, thoughts, and fantasies jostle on macro canvases; the language of representation woven tightly into her distinct visual vocabulary. Inspired by 1930’s fonts, Japanese Shunga, metaphysical poetry, film noir, Edgar Reitz’s Heimat, Edith Piaf, Edna O’Brien, Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill, Marlene Dietrich, Anaïs Nin, Pablo Neruda, and Paul Ricœur, the artist nurtures a deep-founded interest in imaginative representation and visually translates this into her own distinctive style. Norman Bel Geddes (born Norman Melancton Geddes; April 27, 1893 – May 8, 1958) was an American theatrical and industrial designer, described in 2012 by the New York Times as "a brilliant craftsman and draftsman, a master of style, the 20th century’s Leonardo da Vinci." As a young designer, Bel Geddes brought an innovative and energized perspective to the Broadway stage and New York’s Metropolitan Opera. In the 1930s he became one of the first to hold the title of Industrial Designer. His futuristic Streamline designs re-invisioned many of the utilitarian objects of the day from airliners and cruise ships to cocktail shakers and circuses. Notably, he also conceived and oversaw construction of the blockbuster Futurama Exhibition at the landmark 1939 New York World's Fair. I created this diptych as soon as I moved to Berlin, during the Covid lockdown. And it is not so much about real travel and relations between people and distances as it is about a dream. At that difficult time, we had to be locked up at home, not see friends, not live a full life, but nevertheless, no restrictions could take away our opportunity to dream, imagine and create! Today is World Penguin Day, and in Peter Blake’s ‘Penguins’ from his Venice Suite series, some unexpected visitors have appeared in the lagoon, ranging from man-sized to normal and dominating the composition. Gondolas and other boats pass by in the background. The Venice Suite was inspired by Blake’s trip to Venice for the Biennale of 2007. Each piece in the portfolio is a jewel of his trademark collage style. Blake combines traditional images of the city on the lagoon with visual excerpts from vintage children’s books, photographs, postcards, as well as details from works of the old masters. This visual witticism is teamed with a palette of turquoise, gold and the grey of the stones of Venice to create a surreal fairytale vision of the city. Blake juxtaposes the baroque grandeur of the architectural icons of Venice with giant penguins, wartime bombers, Edwardian rowers and icebergs to name a few. The end result is a portfolio of works that are playful, imaginative, beautiful, immensely varied and representative of Sir Peter Blake’s unique vision. ‘Penguins’ is a limited edition silkscreen print from the boxed portfolio set ‘The Venice Suite’, signed and numbered by the artist. Caroline is London born artist who is currently living and working in Southern Spain. ‘My work has evolved out of years of painting landscapes and figures. It draws on a vast mental archive of images and the intense excitement engendered by such experience. I am interested in space both literally and pictorially and the arrangement of forms therein. I like the tension between what can be read as figuration but is abstract and figuration that depends on Abstract values to work. The most recent paintings are on Perspex, painted on both sides which adds literal depth, very painterly on one side, smooth and transparent on the other. What is also interesting is they present an entirely different aspect depending on how they are lit. A few yummy crops of the new canvases I’ve been working on for the last few weeks. I’ve been deliberately taking my time with them, which is unusual for me. Normally I work much more quickly, but it has been an interesting experience pacing myself and seeing how they develop. I think they’re nearly there now. Although we’re still waiting for spring to appear here in the UK, we have a number of artworks inspired by the season, with it’s hope of new beginnings and warmer climes. @brucemcleanofficial is an artist who often references seasons, especially in his compositions that are inspired by the natural world as experienced in the domestic gardens he spends time in observing the changes in the flora and fauna. In his 2019 silkscreen ‘Fresh White Spring’, Mclean offers a semi abstract composition of hand-drawn lines representing the first branches and collage elements in the form of green squares and yellow and white oval shapes.
