S. testacea seems distributed only in southern Africa, but the differences with S. cephalotes (Kolbe, 1897) and S. senegalensis (Laporte de Castelnau, 1840), both widely spread in the intertropical fascia of Africa, and S. betsimisaraka (Paulian, 1956) from Madagascar and Comores Islands, are not well defined (Bologna & Laurenzi 1994). 🐝 Synhoria sp. parasitizes large carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa). 🇨🇿 Taxonomie rodu je stále neuspokojivá, protože rozlišovací znaky jsou značně proměnlivé (viz Bologna 1994). The species lives in the mountains at an altitude of 1800m to 3000 m. EDIT 2014, despite very low night temperatures at an altitude of 2200 m, this species was attracted by a light trap. Adlbauer, 2008 states [1] that this has not yet been recorded. 🇨🇿 Vzácný endemický druh jižní Etiopie. Druh žije v horách v nadmořské výšce od 1800 do 3000 m. KARIBIB & USAKOS env. ~ Spitzkoppe area 📅 Our observation period: March ~ April ℹ️ This is a very rare desert dweller Western Namibia (?? as well as Gordonia and Richtersveld region of the Northern Cape Province, adjacent the Orange River). Adults have been observed flying immediately after rainfall events, but never feeding on flowers, fruits or sap. Specimens have also been collected drowned in water pools or in farrm througs. EDIT 2017: I observed the species sitting on dry grass during the day. 🇨🇿 Jedná se o velmi vzácného pouštního obyvatele západní Namibie (?? a také regionu Gordonia a Richtersveld v provincii Northern Cape, přiléhající k řece Orange). Dospělí byli pozorováni létající bezprostředně po dešti, ale nikdy se nekrmili květinami, ovocem nebo mízou. Exempláře byly také sbírány utopené ve vodních tůních nebo na farmách. Until at 50 mm long, they are among the largest dung beetles in Africa, and globally. The dung beetle was once widespread in southern Africa but is now restricted to a few isolated fragments in the south of the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces of South Africa, with the largest population present in the Addo Elephant National Park (AENP). ⚠️ The female lays one egg, which she then guards through larval stage by making sure the brood ball stays free of fungus. She will only have one or two broods per year ‼️ Furthermore, it complies with most of the characteristics that increase its likelihood of endangerment or extinction and qualifies as “vulnerable” according to IUCN criteria of threatened species. 🇨🇿 Circellium bacchus (Fabricius 1781) patří k nejstarším popsaným broukům z jižní Afriky. Unique Flower beetle pair (Eudicella tetraspilota euthalia) of Kenya While following some spectacular aerial displays by red-collared widowbirds in full breeding plumage, I chanced upon this mating pair of Flower beetles known as Eudicella tetraspilota euthalia (after the genus revision as it was previously referred to as Eudicella immaculata); it is a very nice variation that’s only found in Kenya. Eudicella euthalia is a tropical, east African species of flower beetle in the genus Eudicella, belonging to the subfamily Cetoniidae. A fairly large beetle (up to 42 millimeters), is has a yellow-green gold bass exoskeleton 'coat'. The detached part of the head is dark red, hind head, pronotum and scutellum dark olive green, legs reddish, coverts yellow without black spots. The male (on top) has a Y-shaped horn on the forehead; on each side of the horn there is a sharp spike. The males use their 'horns' to fight for the females; each male tries to tilt the opponent over on his back by pressing the horn under him. As with most other Cetoniinae, there are four life stages – eggs, larva, pupa and adult. The larvae develop in dark, dead wood while the adult beetles feed on the nectar and pollen of flowers as well as overripe fruits. These four-winged beetles make a loud buzzing sound as they fly from flower to flower. The six legs are dark red in coloration. I can just imagine how someone trying to express themselves about insects such as these might well just call them "metallic longhorns". An incredible beetle that we saw today behind the house we are staying at. We first saw it flying in the air and it was huge! You could hear it’s buzz and when it got close to the ground it’s wings ruffled the ground so much that leaves blew around! So cool! We figure that it was at least 2” or 5cm long, maybe more. And it was at least an inch wide. Apparently they are only common during this time of the year as we are now in the rainy season. Plus the owners of the house say that we will likely see lots of other weird and wonderful creatures during our stay here! You might call them ladybirds, some call them ladybeetles. No matter what name one uses for members of the beetle family Coccinellidae, they are all pretty cute looking critters! Many species are ravenous hunters, tracking down aphids and munching through the sapsuckers like scythes through ripe wheat stalks. Not all ladybeetles eat aphids, though! Some ladybeetles, such as this one: Cleta undulata (with the lengthy common name of Sea Pumpkin Ladybeetle), munches leaves. It has a preference for the leaves of the dune-loving daisy Arctotheca populifolius (aka Sea Pumpkin). A small Snout beetle with a big name - Lixus angustatus, Kiburu River, Njabini in Aberdares Range Lixus angustatus is a species of weevil about 5.5 mm whose coloration is brown and green. Weevils are odd-looking creatures, with their comically long snouts and seemingly misplaced antennae. But they are actually beetles, just like ladybugs and fireflies. Both weevils and snout beetles belong to the large beetle superfamily Curculionoidea, and share certain common habits and traits. They do not much resemble other weevils, so they were traditionally considered a distinct family. There are thousands of weevil species; this is one of the largest families of insects. These weevils are plant-eating beetles with a characteristic long, down-curving extended snout (actually called a rostrum or beak). Like all beetles, they have chewing mouthparts; while it may appear by its shape that a weevil's long snout is for piercing and sucking (like true bugs), it is not. The mouthparts designed for chewing are quite small and located at the end of the rostrum. The antennae have small clubs and are elbowed. The first segment of the antennae usually fits into a special groove on the side of the snout. Most are ¼ to ½ inch long (varies with species). Adults and larvae feed on the leaves of host trees but it is the larval stage that does the most damage. The larvae are usually pale and grublike and are found inside nuts, fruits and other plant parts. When disturbed, weevils often play dead by tucking in their legs and lying motionless on their backs. If from a great height, they let themselves fall like dead down to the floor and remain in place and position in order to avoid being preyed on.
