The key to helping learners change behaviors is understanding what’s driving them in the first place. And sometimes without even knowing it, we make behaviors that are not desirable…actually work for our learner. In turn, encouraging the behavior to occur again. During my graduate studies, I, erroneously admittedly, associated functional behaviors with “good/preferred” behaviors. I understood that the word “function” in the ABA world, meant “why” something occurs. And yet, for some reason I just thought functional behavior = good behavior. When in fact…I was oh so wrong!!! Functional behavior simply means…the behavior meets the learners goal! Regardless if it interferes with learning, relationships, safety. If it gets the learner what they wants it’s functional!!! Imagine the light bulb that went off when I realized interfering behaviors can be functional 🤯. And yes, I understand that is ABA101, but sometimes, the language trips me up! Ha We want behaviors to work for our learner, but we also want the behavior to work and be sustainable for the environment in which the learner presides!
