Our minds are constantly running, it's constantly translating the sounds we hear, the past we've experienced, and what we are dealing with on a day to day basis. This is a good thing but it can also leave us feeling overwhelmed with the amount of thoughts we think a day (which they say is around 80,000 thoughts a day!) What's even more, most of those thoughts that we have are negative. Which means if we aren't intentional - we are probably FEELING negative because of those thoughts. And then, we behave in a way that reflects those thoughts and the cycle goes round and round. We worry, then we lose motivation, and we don't manifest the peace or happiness or ultimately the emotional safety we seek. So how do we combat this - that's what this post is about. Addiction can be conceptualized as a disease related to the brain’s reward system, specifically related to dopamine. However addiction is not just related to dopamine levels — when dopamine levels are altered, every neurochemical is also altered, affecting multiple brain systems. Engaging in a behavior that increases dopamine and endorphin release produces a “reward”, causing individuals to be more likely to continue this behavior. Addiction has often to be viewed as “choice” by most individuals, however addiction is actually now defined as a chronic medical condition that may be influenced by several factors. For example, having a family history of addiction predisposes certain individuals to be more likely to use substances and become addicted, as well as other factors. Individuals under the age of 25 are more predisposed to addiction and substance abuse due to the underdevelopment of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) which is a brain region that is involved with decision making and executing goal-directed behaviors. This leads to impulsivity & impaired decision making, leading to the increased chance of using substances. Addiction and substance use disorders are complex subjects that can be treated with therapy modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Most of our mental and emotional pain is a result of the way we’re treated by other people, our connection needs going unmet, + the social, work, + community environments we’re in. Our symptoms are usually related to a systemic problem within the family, our relationships, + society we live in. We need to STOP making mental health symptoms a personal issue because our pain is usually created by external factors outside our control. We’ve become so habitual in intellectualizing our pain that we don’t learn to be present with our feelings + allow them to move through us until they pass. Yes, perspective shifts help, but ultimately we need to address the root causes of our pain, change the bigger issues that are causing it, + evolve into the healthiest version of ourselves. We have the power to improve collective mental health by making our healing work an important part of our lifestyle. When we heal ourselves, we heal each other + create gradual systemic improvements over time. I will be celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary with my partner this year. This feels monumental to me, as I often struggled to see myself in a marriage in the traditional sense of the word. Yes, I wanted to be married and have children. And also, sometimes, I didn’t. I imagined so many different lives for myself. I had so many relationships work and then stop working, so imagining finding a way through the hurdles and the monotony of being in a relationship for this long wasn’t something I was convinced I could do. So far, I’m glad I tried. The first year of my marriage was the hardest one. That’s not at all what I expected or what I had seen depicted in the movies. I had assumed that the first year would be easy; we would be in our honeymoon period, but that wasn’t the case for us. We had lived together for a few years before getting married. We had made it through the hell of wedding planning, but we really struggled with the transition. We just kept having the same fight over and over, although it took a while for that to become clear. For many years, I never knew that I had needs, let alone that they were valid. The inflection point came when I read the book Attached (about our attachment styles) after a challenging break-up, which brought to light that ALL humans have an innate need for intimacy and that it was valid through and through. With years of somatic therapy and practices, I've learned to tune into my own needs, articulate them to others, and meet them on my own too. You're allowed to make requests of others. Catastrophising is a cognitive distortion that prompts people to jump to the worst possible conclusion, usually with very little information or objective reasons to despair. Life throws all sorts of challenges at us, and when these happen, anxiety can sometimes take over and try to warn us and protect us from the worst case scenario. However, the worst case scenario is not always the case, and adopting strategies like challenging these thoughts and looking at the evidence supporting them can help us to realise this. And even if the worst case scenario might happen, it’s a more useful and pragmatic use of our energy to plan how to overcome that eventuality rather than panic about it.
