On Tuesday I announced this project to galvanise and grow the very special area and successful community of village of Irene, using my immensely powerful ‘Fully Booked’ process. Look forward be sharing the journey with you in the coming months: Dear Irene Community near and far I have been living here since mid-2022 and yet I have been at home here my whole life. My paternal grandparents moved to Queen Street in 1948, bought an acre up the road five years later, and built the family home where my father and my two uncles then grew up. My grandfather, Richard Wheeler, was an engineer on the railways and took the train to work from Irene Station, while my father, Frank, took it in the other direction to Pretoria Boys High and then later on to work in town. He had been a local Boy Scout, like many others, and I still have his camping axe and wide-brimmed felt hat. My parents married and moved to London in 1967 and brought me back with them in 1969, which is when I first took root in the house and the area. That was also the year that my grandmother, Mrs FM Wheeler, retired from twenty years of teaching at the primary school having influenced many. I went on to grow up in Joburg but carried a lifelong history in Irene, and longer. The edge, advantage and role are summarised simply as ‘soul’. In this, Africa has what everyone needs, now more than ever and pressingly at this pivotal point in history. Soul is the spirit of transformation and quantum progress, which is the core of the human experience and the future of industry. Africa is charged with bringing it to bear and showing the rest of the world the way. Fortunately, Africa has soul for Africa, and much more, and the world is catching on and catching up, or simply stopping denying it, spurred by the overall acceleration of change. With the increasing revelation of the corruption behind the curtain and with the crumbling of the old comes the emergence of the awakened and shining new. Africa may have suffered severe exploitation and endured perceived deficiencies in the past, but that is because of its wealth, and the future has now arrived with the picture increasingly clear. Soul and its permutations are the way, and there is no faking it, stealing it, bribing it, or hiding it, plus, and most important, you can’t do without it. eNCA, or eNews Channel Africa, South Africa’s most watched news channel, interviewed me last week for their show The Bookshelf, which is the longest author feature in the country at 24 minutes. I chose my ancestral home as our location because it features so significantly in ‘LOVE is the Key to Finding Your Voice’. The host, Sindy Mabe, whom I last saw in 2010 when she presented eTV’s breakfast show called Sunrise, arrived looking resplendent despite the heatwave, and the crew cooly pulled off the intense job at hand like we were not filming in a dry sauna. Presenting to the press means preparing yourself and then delivering your message while staying open to spontaneity in a vortex of energy. It amounts to presence under pressure and can bring big shifts. The Bookshelf is scheduled for 17 March and I will post the recording when that goes up soon afterwards. One reason I stopped in Bangkok, last year and this, was to visit my friend, acclaimed artist, scholar and entrepreneur, Arianna Caroli, who lives nomadically out of the big city and spreads her mastery with a sustained vibrancy immune to age and social categorisation. Look at the timeless themes in her abundant work on her website at www.ariannacaroli.com, some of which is on permanent display in MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art Bangkok. Her larger-than-life paintings also adorn luxury hotels around Southeast Asia, and select pieces have been converted into clothing and accessories. “Make art, wear art, be art,” she will tell you with Umbrian accent while whirling Sufi-like wearing her own creations in front of more of her creations. After Penang, Bangkok was a pleasure, as Thailand usually is after you’ve been anywhere else. Far from faultless, though, the big city was a delight, and different from when I was in town nine months before. This stay was more familiar than fantastic, and, like Phuket, distinctly homely, considering that I will never be Siamese. No farang ever is, although, spiritually, we all are. It’s a compelling paradox. Siam is what Thailand used to be called and that soul still teems from the streets and churns in the muddy old river, while people pump and swarm the urban arteries fuelled by global ambition and the latest revolutions in retail. In the mix are the cosmopolitans, the non-Thais, drawn repeatedly to exotic adventure, self-discovery, and the edge that you can find in only one place. That is Bangkok. Last time it was wine in sky-bars, tipsiness in taxis, and multiple tuk-tuk jaunts through Chinatown to Khaosan Road. This time it was slithers in skytrains, 7Eleven toasted sandwiches for breakfast, and hotel-roof panoramas for late afternoon lunch. It was more of a breathing-out than a breathing-in, as it had gone from a prefix to Phuket last year to this year’s closer en route to South Africa following three months on the island. Yesterday I finished writing a new book, which is the 28th title in the INSIGHTS series. I began it in early November 2022 in South Africa, added greatly to it in Thailand in the first half of 2023, and compiled it in Johannesburg, just short of ten months after I started, to find that it is done. It brought a remarkable feeling of a near-complete body of life’s work in a comprehensive set of handbooks for the new humanity. The job now is to get them into everyone’s hands. The trilogy I told you about earlier this year, namely, BRIGHTER, PURER, and MANLIER, is in production, and will come with an accessible overview of the whole series. On the way out of Phuket, I spent three nights in Penang, a nearby island in Malaysia, which came recommended but left me disappointed. I liked the traditional buildings interspersed between the growing high-rises, I loved the temples, mosques and street retailers in Little India, and the bay was beautiful, but that’s about it. The flights were not cheap, the locals were not hospitable, the food was not great, the experience was not fun, and the departure was not unwelcome. I probably wouldn’t go back, even for a quick visa-run, but I did come away with some insights and photographs. Maybe I needed someone to usher me into it, as is often the case with new places. After it all, I was happy to get back to Thailand and, specifically, Bangkok, which is one of the great cities in the world. More about that soon. Phuket isn’t everything. There are certain spots it doesn’t hit, and those add up as you stay on. At some point, something turns and signals time to move. It can be the sea, the season or something inside you. The longing for the island will accumulate once more. As magical as it is, the scene can get boring when the rest of your life is beckoning, and that can bring you down, which is why I have been working on having bases in a few of my favourite places. South Africa is certainly one. Interests need feeding and aspects of the self must find form. I write wildly when in Phuket but struggle to get other work done. This three-month stay put so much into perspective and set me straight for the next era, which is well underway. Here’s my reply to all the comments on my post from 12 July: Thank you all again for your supportive and generous replies, my friends, here and in your private messages. I have read them a few times and allowed a considered reply to come together in appreciation. One theme was how I spoke for many and the experience behind the happy faces we all carry around. There is certainly a universality to what we go through internally while we navigate the story surrounding us. Good to be open about it. So glad to speak for you too. Another theme was the bravery to say and post what I did. That was part of facing the feelings in the first place, though, while the writing and sharing seemed obvious when the time came. It’s going into the cave that takes courage because coming out has its own authority and energy. The idea of writing a book about it was welcome, and I may well do that. In fact, I have a not-so-little surprise up my sleeve from last year when I did something similar, so keep an eye out for an announcement. In terms of diagnostics, I am aware of the autism-related nature of my account, and it was helpful to consider it more carefully. The ‘symptoms’ are also classic OCD, which certainly describes me, without the ‘disorder’ part, although some may disagree. Then there are doses of PTS and narcissism, plus a classic case of being an artist and a writer. And there’s more. Welcome to the club! I’m not one for the DSM5 with the alienating attitude behind it, because our callings, wounds and teachings combine into our purpose. It’s about being heard and feeling understood. Underneath it all is love. That’s what I have always been driven and sustained by, through great trials, like many who have lived for truth and art. It’s sad how society treats that, with tragic stories of greatness strewn throughout history, like the recent example of Sinéad O’Connor.
