Introducing our first subject for the Mysterious Men and Peculiar Deaths series: George Reeves. Reeves was born George Keefer Brewer on January 5th, 1914 in Woolstock, Iowa. His mother Helen remarried Frank Bessolo when George was young and he didn't learn that Bessolo was his stepfather until many years later, which caused a rift between George and Helen. Reeves attended Pasadena Junior College and later trained at the Pasadena Playhouse as a Shakespearean actor after his mother stopped his aspirations of becoming a boxer - a sport that ended up breaking his nose. At the Playhouse, Reeves met his wife Ellanora Needles, whom he was married to from 1940 to 1950 until she left him for a rich man. His first major role was in Gone With the Wind and the studio promptly changed his real name to George Reeves. He acted in several smaller films but his big break came with 1943's So Proudly We Hail, a movie that inspired him to join the service. When George returned, acting jobs were scarce and he took more bit parts, even digging cesspools for friends and neighbors. Reeves' big break came in 1951 with the series Superman. While the show ended up stopping his film career from going any further and Reeves found it unchallenging acting-wise, he forged deep friendships with his co-workers and affection for his young fans. Reeves was dedicated to charity work with his girlfriend Toni Mannix, wife of MGM executive Eddie Mannix. In 1958 for unknown reasons, Reeves broke things off with Toni and began seeing controversial socialite Leonore Lemmon. They arranged to marry on June 19th, 1959 - three days after Reeves was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a suicide due to supposed depression over his career, but much evidence contests this conclusion.

All the members of the Doors lived in the LA canyons over the years - John Densmore and Ray Manzarek in Laurel Canyon and Jim Morrison both there as well as Topanga Canyon. But today we’re talking about Robbie Krieger, a longtime resident of nearby Benedict Canyon. Speaking to Guitar World Magazine in 2012, at the time of a reissue of The Doors seminal 1971 album “LA Woman,” Krieger told the story of “Hyacinth House,” one of the tracks from that album. “I had a little house up in Benedict Canyon, Krieger said. “Jim and John and a couple other people came over there one night, and we were just fooling around, taping some stuff. The song makes a reference to some hyacinth flowers right outside the window.” Krieger goes on to say that there’s a line in the song were Morrison references a friend who kept hogging the bathroom all night. “Finally, the guy got out of the bathroom, and Jim goes, ‘I see the bathroom is clear,’ which is a line in ‘Hyacinth House.’ He wrote the song on the spot, and I think that was how some of the best Doors songs were written,” Krieger said. There was one other reference to Krieger’s home that was immortalized in the song, “At the time, I had a pet bobcat, which would mostly stay outside,” Krieger said. “That’s where Jim got that line in the song about the lions. I saw her in a pet store when she was a cute little kitten and said, ‘She looks just like a bobcat,’ and the guy said, ‘She is a bobcat.’” Krieger kept the bobcat for about three years before she got “a little bit nasty” and he gave her to a man who specialized in rehabilitating wild pets and releasing them in the Ventura County mountains. “But he claimed that she attacked him and he had to shoot her,” Krieger said. “Poor kitty. In 1975 Elton John was living in Benedict Canyon in a glamorous Spanish-style mansion formerly owned by silent film star John Gilbert (who lived there while having an affair with Greta Garbo). And while his time at the house was filled with raucous parties and fun (see my stories today for one of those hilarious tales) John could still sense the strange, dark undercurrent that permeated the area, just six years after the Manson murders took place at a nearby home. Writing in his autobiography, “Me,” John said there was “this weird sense that you were never really safe there, even in a big house in Beverly Hills.” That feeling was taken to the extreme when an uninvited guest found their way inside John’s home. “I woke up one morning to find a girl sitting on the end of my bed, staring at me,” he writes. “I couldn’t get up, because I never wore anything when I slept. All I could do was sit there screaming at her to get the f**k out. German actress Elke Sommer paints in her Benedict Canyon home as featured in the 1969 book “Hollywood Life: The Glamorous Homes of Vintage Hollywood.” Born in Berlin, Sommer was discovered by an Italian film producer while on vacation in Italy and was immediately cast in a string of films across Europe. Her classic beauty soon had Hollywood beckoning and her impressive comedic timing scored her roles alongside Paul Newman in “The Prize” (1963), Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther sequel “A Shot in the Dark” (1964) and Bob Hope in “Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number” (1965). In 1964, Sommers married Hollywood columnist Joe Hyams and the two moved into their home in Benedict Canyon. Soon after, Sommer starred alongside Sharon Tate and Dean Martin in 1969’s “The Wrecking Crew.” The Manson murders near her home in Benedict Canyon that same year, and the death threats her husband reportedly received from Manson followers, led Sommer to leave Hollywood and return to Europe. BENEDICT CANYON DRIVE (Benedict Canyon, Beverly Hills, Sherman Oaks) Named for Edson Abijah Benedict (1819-1886), a New York native who left Missouri for Los Angeles in 1862 and ran a grocery store downtown until 1868, when he bought 160 rugged acres of Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas and built a home at the base of Cañada de los Encinos – “Ravine of the Holly Oaks”. Benedict, his wife Josephine (1832-1921), and their sons Pierce, Frank, and Angelo kept bees here; Pierce later claimed that their apiary produced 45,000 pounds of honey in one year alone. The ravine itself was renamed Benedict Canyon by 1887, possibly to memorialize Edson in the wake of his death. Pierce purchased 230 more acres in the ravine, but by 1932 the family had sold it all off. As for Benedict Canyon Drive, it was first proposed in 1914 as a short cut between Beverly Hills and the Valley. The ostentatious Cielo Drive sign is obviously added for the film so I assumed this sharp curve was chosen purely for its visual impact. When I visited, I realised that this beautifully quiet spot really is the turn into Cielo, just a few hundred yards from the site of the horrific murders. That was quite disturbing. I didn’t venture any further. There’s no point rubbernecking anyway. The house was demolished, the street number changed and the estate totally remodelled to leave no trace of its former existence.
