They recieved Olympic status in December last year and the dance - sport is set to make its debut in Paris Olympics 2024. Eshwar Tiwari known as B Boy Wildchild participated at Famous studios in Mumbai on Saturday and defeated top B Boys to profess his first Cypher India title. Johanna Rodrigues popularly known as B Girl Jo secured Cypher India crown as the first Indian male or female breaker. Both B Girl Jo and B Boy Wildchild will participate in the Last Chance Cypher competing both the genders and will have breakers from more than 33 countries. The difficulties I witness around me push me toward where I want to be. There are numerous things I can not change but I strongly believe embodying the pain and the fierce upliftment that comes as a result teaches me the most. . . . This week, I will train harder for the girls who tried breaking in India over the past few decades. 20- 30 girls who could not continue because of family, work, expectations of getting married, and a competitive community pitting one girl against the other. I will train for the girls who have confided in me their stories of not being allowed to attend jams because of safety issues, accounts of feeling misunderstood among the boys around them, being touched inappropriately within the community and being ridiculed in and out of practice. I do this in honour of all the work those girls before me put in. Im sorry if it seemed like what was being built kept collapsing and sorry that you couldn't enjoy all that this art form has to offer. Bring your stories and then come rock the cyphers the way you are. The more we share, the more we grow. The community is much more inclusive now I think, and on its way to deserving a stronger female presence. . . Now im obviously not discounting the insane difficulties of being an artist it self; socially, financially, etc. Major respect to the bboys I met at Kerela who's dads are tailors and contract laborers. We all have our own set of difficulties to rise above. I don't discount any of it. When there are common difficulties many are facing, maybe talking about it helps? Lets all rise above instead of pulling each other behind. Fuck the mentality of scarcity we are taught. You can be everything and so can the person right beside you. Being women in India, we get so used to lowering our eyes when we see men approaching us on the road. Whatever it is, it results in many women who find eye contact difficult. There is extensive research on how body posture changes the way we think of ourselves and looking down, closing of the body, can result in feeling inferior and developing low self-esteem issues. . . . When you feel safe, walking with people or down a safe road, challenge this. People are going to look at you the way they want to, its going to take a while for that to change. But you, you look up and be yourself. We have to break the cycle at some point and showing how human we are is probably the best bet to get people to stop objectifying us.
