Recently a gallery reached out to me via my website expressing an interest in showing my work and then turned around to me and said that they couldn’t see my work in their gallery. My question for today is why reach out to me in the first place? It only raises ones hopes to have them dashed again. I seem to have had a career where galleries have either closed after my show, taken my work off their website,stopped showing my work, emptying their store of my work or me removing my work because they were ripping me off. That’s now my ninth consecutive rejection this year and I’m feeling pretty dead artistically. The act of drawing what I see in these people is not really an artistic one,more a technical challenge as well as an endurement one. Can I continue to work my way through these faces at this pace, can I draw those faces that are going to be difficult and how do I use the knowledge I have of different drawing languages to interpret this face? Showing @rupturexibit as part of its whole studio group show: ‘THE ENTRANCED ESSENCE’ 25TH APRIL - 4TH MAY In today's social media driven world, we take picture after picture of ourselves to post a selfie - but we fail to capture how we truly feel about ourselves. The same can be said about the artist painting a self portrait, only it's a much slower process! When creating this diptych, I took an eyes-shut/eyes-open approach. "I can see you can see me" is a blind drawing I made while staring at my reflection in the mirror and letting my hand create the picture without looking. This image is not the work of the eyes and hands but the capturing of a moment of observation and self-examination. "In your heart, Baby" is a mixed media reproduction of my image in the mirror. We talk a lot about the male gaze, and how it influences our self-perception as women. In 2021 my mother, Gaia’s Brazilian grandmother, had a partial breast removal due to a malign tumor, so thank God she has recovered and the cancer went away. I explained 8/9 year-old Gaia what happened and, to make it into another positive outcome, I explained Gaia about breast cancer and so we worked on another creative project exercise which was to create distinct nipple shapes within breast lines drawn by me. So, Gaia, drew all these nipple shapes giving it humor and interesting visuals to this concentration that came from exploring all Gaia had that creative weekend. Gaia created more than 140 pairs of nipples that weekend! Yesterday was the first time since 2.4.24 that I had a bit of a break from the portrait challenge and focused my energies on uploading some more content to my Patreon channel (see Linktree). The focus on line and the basic construction of the head is a sound start in my opinion. The challenge of course provides me with a whole range of other faces and it is a breath of fresh air not to continually draw myself, so it’s also quite strange to see myself depicted by other people. As I see more faces appear on @jyportraitchallenge #jyportraitchallenge @judithlaws there is also a feeling of dread as I screen grab another 170 heads and realise that I have only just scratched the surface. We will have to see if I decide to draw or paint all of these images, but perhaps I do need to ease off the pace of production for a while. Of course when you embark on a project like Judith Laws portrait challenge @judithlaws @jyportraitchallenge #jyportraitchallenge you do so for a number of reasons, in much the same way I undertook drawing and painting all those sitters on PAOTY. One is that it is a challenge and not a small one either. With a years worth posts and a Instagram feed that reconfigures itself (how does one do that?) I keep finding new models to draw. It gives me something to do on the train, bus or in the evening when there’s nothing to watch. It’s enjoyable and like lots of things I can get utterly absorbed in it. But whilst it’s easy to look at a range of heads a pick a couple and adopt the same strategy to draw it’s much more difficult when you decide to take on the ones where you cannot do that. Beautiful women are difficult to draw as are children. Flatly lit photos are much more challenging to work from than the ones with more Baroque lighting. But when you give it a go and crack the code to that particular face it’s very satisfying. We talk to students all the time about working out of your comfort zone and when something is difficult it means you are learning something new! Finally the pay off having made over 110 new portraits since the beginning of April is that you have also created new teaching content as well that can be used to guide others. I have always found that blind drawing helps me slow down and focus; it’s the best way to find an understanding of what I’m looking at. It’s like a conversation between you and the subject, with the pen taking down notes. Then the stories become more varied, each with their own point of view, and you realize that you could probably write a book with them. At this point, I’m just happy to create a few chapters before I have to move on. Do you not have enough time to recharge? Enough time for self-care? Enough time to fill your own cup before you serve others? This is an excuse I have used regularly- 'life' is just TOO BUSY with really IMPORTANT stuff. The reality to that life is too short NOT to put yourself first and make sure that your cup is full. Our short life is for living, NOT just existing. Yesterday I went on a little mindful, creative walk and it only took 20 minutes. All I had was my sketchbook and some charcoal (I could have been some paper and a pen). This is such a simple thing to do because it isn't about the quality of the drawing (believe me- look at the picture!). EVERYONE can do this! Blind drawing is a technique where you DON'T look at the paper/drawing until you have finished (so it doesn't need to be good). As you walk (slowly) look around you. The things that catch your eye draw. Because you are walking (and you are passing the thing you are drawing) you need to draw/sketch quickly. Maybe even just make marks to represent what you see. 🤔 Why this is a great thing to do: you could argue that a lovely walk in the countryside is mindful enough BUT you still have your thoughts, worries, plans whirring around in your head. You could walk for quite a distance and not even notice half the things you are passing. ✏️ Adding some blind drawing to your walk really makes you see. 🧐 You get to see the little things, patterns, detail and beauty. 🤫 It quietens your busy mind and frees you from the anxieties of life. 🥰 You get to enjoy and appreciate your surroundings even more than normal. 🙄 There are loads more benefits but I don't want to bore you.
