Pendant ce temps-là, à la Biennale d’Art Contemporain de Venise, l’artiste des Premières Nations australiennes Archie Moore remporte le Lion d’Or du meilleur pavillon national participant !!! Avec son oeuvre “Kith and Kin”, l’artiste a transformé le pavillon de l'Australie avec un immense arbre généalogique dessiné à la main illustrant sa lignée qui remonte à plus de 2 400 générations. CONGRATULATIONS ARCHIE MOORE - GOLDEN LION RECIPIENT @labiennale @justin.m.paton writes ‘A large dark room. A low still pond. A vast table of white documents. And all round the chalkboard-black walls, a night sky of connected names. Even if you knew nothing of Australia or its first nations or colonial histories, Archie Moore’s Golden Lion-winning occupation of the national pavilion would register as solemn and stirring. And when you do know even a little, this work (‘kith and kin’) becomes enormous - a memorial created not from etched stone but vulnerable chalk and stacked paper. The names: a kinship map extending from Moore himself - humbly marked as ‘Me’ - up through his Kamilaroi and Bigambul ancestors and out into (curator Ellie Buttrose’s words) ‘the deep time of space and simultaneously into the future. Meanwhile, watched over by all of these names, the island of loss and shame at the centre: the stacks of documents representing the lives of the more than 550 First Nations people who have died in custody since the Royal Commission of 1987-1991. You can’t read them closely; the pond is a barrier; the effect is bitter and piercing, not cathartic - a standoff between the immensity of human connection across time and the bitter facts of hurt and inaction in the present. Though the temporariness of ‘kith and kin’ is part of its point, it’s hard not to imagine it installed somewhere permanent in Australia for young people to discover - a new kind of memorial, and a reminder (Ellie Buttrose’s words again) ‘that every person on the planet has kinship duties to one another’. It felt special to be in Venice on the day the world recognised this work — and to see the length of the queue outside the pavilion in the hours and days following. Following the success of African countries at this years Venice Biennale, Australia 🇦🇺 has its own first this year, with First Nations artist Archie Moore receiving the Golden Lion for best national pavilion for his moving piece ‘Kith and Kin’. Congrats dear Nil Yalter, who will be awarded with the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement of the 60th international art exhibition of @labiennale 2024 together with Anna Maria Maiolino.🦁 Yalter is widely regarded as a pioneer in the global feminist art movement and also part of the @verbundcollection 🤍 Exile is a Hard Job (1977–2024), named using the words of Turkish poet Nâzim Hikmet, features videos and fly-posters documenting the lives and experiences of immigrants and exiles, with the work’s title painted over them in bold red letters, in the manner of a political slogan. The book Exile is a Hard Job: Walls brings together a comprehensive archive on the guerilla postering project which spread to 19 cities over 12 years by forging the collaboration of art institutions around the world.
