All good things do come to an end. I have just finished my last night shift at Addenbrookes Hospital as I prepare to move for my training elsewhere. I came here right at the end of my F2 and fondly remember my first shift on a warm August afternoon in 2019 when COVID didn't exist and patients could still see our faces. The last three and a half years have brought many challenges, many highs and lows, but I have thoroughly enjoyed working with some of the most amazing colleagues I know. I am truly grateful to everyone who made me so welcome. Over this time, Cambridge became home and I am ending up saying goodbye to not only a fantastic hospital but also a truly wonderful city. Honoured to have been accepted as the 15th Global Eye Site scholar and the first international one of the last 3 years and to have spent almost a month at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Glaucoma Department. Have massively enjoyed the detailed discussions on the surgical and medical management of challenging adult and paediatric glaucoma cases and to have been able to compare what we do in Cambridge Eye Unit and how this is different with the management strategy followed at the Bascom Palmer, which has been named the best US Ophthalmic Centre. Very grateful to Professor Alana Grajewski, the heart and soul of this programme, to Professor Peter Chang and to Dr Elena Bitrian for the many hours spent discussing and doing practical work on new surgical glaucoma techniques. And of course to Mr Anthony Broad and the rest of the staff at Bascom Palmer who welcomed me and made this experience truly unforgettable. Maths was never my strong point, I had to resit my maths exam 10 times which took me a total of 4 years to pass (little embarrassing). But I finally passed, meaning I could get into one of the top 5 Universities in England to study Adult Nursing (BSc). I’ve never been the academic type, so when I finished my degree with a First Class Honours I cried for hours 🤣. Since qualifying I’ve worked as a Staff Nurse on the Transplant unit, Hepatology, High Dependency Unit, Intensive Care and now the Infectious Disease Assessment Unit as a Junior Sister! COVID19 resulted to a lot of problems in the delivery of healthcare. In eras of turmoil, problems can be turned into opportunities. Due to social distancing we could not see the thousands of patients in our Cambridge University Hospital glaucoma clinics. I had the honour, as the consultant in charge, with the help of an amazing team of colleagues, to design and deliver a visionary project; the development of central Cambridge glaucoma clinics where we will be able to provide at least 3000 appointments aiming for 5000 appointments in the next 12 months. This has already started to make a tremendous positive impact to our patients who attend state of the art facilities under strict social distancing regulations and appointments do not get delayed by the pandemic. Kudos to the Cambridge University Hospitals leaders and managers who supported this project so much; also to my amazing colleagues who care so much about our patients and put their heart into this project. Very proud to work for this organisation. We will continue to innovate! SaveMoneyCutCarbon have been chosen as NHS Sustainability Awards Supplier of the Year to mark the highly successful progress in reducing energy consumption at Cambridge University Hospital's (CUH) world-famous Addenbrooke’s Hospital, renowned for its teaching facilities and research. We have been working closely with Addenbrooke’s for over 4 years, driving forward initiatives to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. Our team has delivered 11 substantial LED lighting and lighting controls projects, with hundreds of LED lamps installed, as well as providing supply services for the hospital. From our installations to date Addenbrooke’s expects yearly savings of £148,000 in electricity and maintenance, validated by a rigorous monitoring and verification programme.
