I have somehow contracted a nasty case of Swine Flu which I am now recovering from but I used the opportunity whilst relaxing (and the fact we had semi-clear skies this evening) to calibrate my astrophotography equipment as we head towards Winter and hopefully improved astrophotography conditions. I limited the imaging session to around 30 mins for some objects and as little as 8 mins for others ... As always the incredible Celestron RASA 8 combined with my ZWO294mc Pro camera opened up the universe for some amazing exploration. This was just the medicine I needed to start feeling better and I will hopefully put in more time tomorrow evening on one or two of these objects. *second upload* The Pelican Nebula - my first major finished SHO project. 41 hours total, finally got around to processing it all. What you see is not the “true” color of this nebula, but is what is called a false color image. The SHO palette (made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope) maps 3 narrow band passes of light to Red, Green, and Blue. Red = Sulfur (S), Green= Hydrogen Alpha (H), and Blue = Oxygen III (O). Notonly does this make for a pretty photo, but it allows us to see the composition of a deep sky object and resolve fine details in that object that we might otherwise lose with normal RGB photography. Another fun aspect of these SHO palette images are the purple/magenta stars (again, not a true color representation). So the next time you see a Hubble photo or any other space photo that looks something like this, know that while it is not a “true” color representation, in some ways it gives us a clearer picture of the composition and details of that object. I have so many individual pictures and will continue to work on this data. I also have another data set from a second camera to work with. Baily’s Beads and Totality On April 8th, I was fortunate enough to experience my first total solar eclipse. By coincidence, the sun and moon have almost identical apparent sizes in the sky. The sun is about 400 times larger in diameter, but also about 400 times father from Earth, allowing us to experience total eclipses. In the seconds before and after totality, the Baily’s Beads effect can be observed. Due to the moon’s rough terrain, some sunlight passes through gaps while the rest is blocked, appearing like beads on the surface. This composite shows the effect as totality begins and ends. Also visible in the photo are the bright pink solar prominences. Combining data from my telescope and 400mm lens resulted in this composite photo of Monday’s eclipse, showing both the Sun’s corona as well as the lunar surface, faintly revealed by Earthshine (sunlight reflecting off Earth onto the Moon). My eclipse photos will be available on my website soon if anyone is interested in a print! Swipe to see my setup for the eclipse. I used a @nikonusa Z6 on a @celestronuniverse 8” EdgeHD telescope and AVX mount to get close-up details of the Moon and chromosphere, along with a Nikon Z8 and 400mm lens on a @skywatcherusa Star Adventurer 2i tracker and @gitzoinspires tripod for the overall view of the corona. NGC 2359 or Thors helmet is a nebula in the constellation Canis Major. I had hoped to add substantially more data to my original captures of this stunning object but have only managed to gather an additional 2 hours due to all the inclement weather we have been having. Even though it’s a little brighter and more of the nebulosity is visible in this image, it’s still a work in progress. One of the many things astrophotography has taught me is it be patient … we can’t alter the weather and this photographic interest is constantly at the mercy of it. Thors helmet is about 11 960 light years from us and this image consists of various imaging sessions with the Celestron 9.25” edge HD scope and ZWO294mc pro camera. This wonderful shot of the Pillars of Creation at the heart of the Eagle Nebula is another image where I purchased the raw data bundle from Telescope Live and processed into this final image via PixInsight. The Pillars are composed of interstellar gas and dust about 6500-7000 light years from Earth. They received this name due to their shape and the fact that literally thousands of protostars are forming within this thick veil of gas and dust. These pillars extend over 4 light years in length. That means they’re as long as Earth is from Alpha Centauri, our closest start system. Shot with the @telescope.live CHI-1-CMOS observatory out of El Sauce Observatory, Chile.
