15th prompt of #prehistovember is WARFARE. Walking the line between Prehistory and Antiquity with this one. This is a war trophy inspired by the one found at the oppidum of Corent, near the Gergovian plateau. The thing about this "scarecrow" trophies or tropaion is that they were used by the ancient Greeks as a way of commemorating a victory and displaying the armor and weapons of the fallen foes and the Romans later took on that tradition. Piles of armor and weapons have been found in Gaulish or Celtic sites, like this one at Corent (located in a sanctuary's enclosure), that suggest a similar way of showing their victories in war. Interestingly enough, it has been noted that Roman records start showing this kind of mannequin shaped trophies after the Gallic Wars, what makes very possible that they actually took this existing tradition from the Iron Age tribes of western Europe. #prehistovember2023 #prehistorychallenge #ironage #ironagearchaeology #gaulish #galloroman #celts #celtic #celticarchaeology #gallicwars #tropaion #trophy #archaeology #archaeologicalillustration #recentprehistory #ancientwarfare #ancientwar #ancientwarrior #celticwarrior #artchallenge

#gundestrupcauldron #celticarchaeology #celticreligion

Perched on a hill outside Armagh city is Emain Macha - or Navan Fort. For centuries this place was home to the kings and queens of Ulster. In recent years archaeologists have been trying to piece together just what the complex would have looked like and how far back in history the site was in use. They believe they have now found physical evidence that the site could have been in use as early as the 4th Century BC. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-66514152 (link in story & highlight) #celtic #celtichistory #irishhistory #celticarchaeology #irisharchaeology #celticnews #ulster #ireland

This week's OA highlight from our 50 years in archaeology is a truly exceptional find. In 2003, our colleagues in the Lancaster office were working on the upgrade of the A1 near Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, when they uncovered this Iron Age chariot burial. To date, only 22 chariot burials have been found in Britain. They date to the Middle Iron Age, between 350 and 150 BC, and most of them were found in East Yorkshire, where the chariots had been dismantled ahead of burial. But the Ferrybridge one really stands out as the chariot was buried upright and intact. Together with the chariot, OA archaeologists found the remains of a 30-40 years old man that would originally have been buried in an upright position. Curiously, the two wheels didn't match, suggesting that the chariot was probably assembled especially for this individual's funerary rites and burial. #OAthroughtime #50highlights #OAat50 #ironage #ironagebritain #yorkshire #westyorkshire #archaeologistsofinstgram #archaeologyfieldwork #britisharchaeology #archaeologylovers #archaeologylife #archaeologist #fieldwork #archaeology #prehistoricarchaeology #celticbritain #celticarchaeology #britainbeforeromaninvasion #yorkshirelovers #ironagearchaeology #chariotburials #archaeologie #archeologia #ukarchaeology #localhistory #discoveringbritain

'The Druids.' Peter Berresford Ellis. Constable And Company 1994 paperback. In very good condition. $12.00 Priests indulging in human sacrifice and forecasting the future from human entrails. Some say they were amiable sorcerers. Others portray them as the intelligentsia of ancient Celtic society. In this book, Peter Berresford Ellis sifts through the evidence, and, with reference to the latest archaeological findings and the use of etymology, he provides the reader with the first authentic account of who and what they were. The Druids emerge as the intellectual caste of ancient Celtic society. They were the doctors, the lawyers, the ambassadors, the advisers to kings. They also had a religious function. Ellis describes the special Druidic training, their philosophy, their belief in auguries, and their intriguing origins. The Roman description of the Druids, he shows, was the bellicose propaganda of an empire anxious to rob them of their power in the Celtic territories. He shows that the current 'New Age' image of them as benevolent wizards comes from a woefully inadequate interpretation of the facts. #thedruids #celticarchaeology #celtichistory #celtichistoryandculture #peterberresfordellis

🎃🍁🍂🦌𝕬𝖑𝖑 𝖍𝖆𝖎𝖑 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕶𝖎𝖓𝖌 🦌🍂🍁🎃 Blessed Samhain and happy Halloween everybody! Samhain is an early medieval Irish festival, and we don't know whether the continental Celts had a similar celebration. In all probability they possibly did, but we know neither the exact name of it, nor the time. The Coligny calendar (likely dating to the 2nd century CE, but possibly older) mentions a month 'Samonios' which, taking into consideration the complicated way this calendar operates with moon phases etc., would probably be the month before or around the winter solstice. Samon- has connections to Irish samrad, meaning summer (Samhain = Summer's end). There's no way of knowing though whether Samonios is corresponding to our November, December, or any other month, nor whether there was any feast going with it. A good compromise is to just go by feeling. If the time feels right, then it probably is. There are some theories that claim the Celts went by moon phases or the position of the sun, which may all be true, but even more than that I believe they went by the signs of nature: acorns falling, leaves turning brown, mushrooms appearing, the first night frosts and so on. So in short, I believe there may have been something like an entire week or stretch of days that were dedicated to 'Samonios' celebrations of some sort. (Picture was taken at the celtic oppidum Dünsberg, the oak crown for this modern sandstone relief of a horned god was made spontaneously from local finds 😄) #samhain #samonios #hornedgod #cernunnos #celtic #celts #continentalcelts #celticcelebrations #celticarchaeology #colignycalendar #wheeloftheyear #pagancelebrations #pagansofinstagram #paganism #celticpagan #oakking #oaks #oakcrown #greenman #leafcrown #celticoppidum #oppidum #dünsberg

The Battersea Shield Found in the River Thames at Battersea Bridge, London Around 350-50 BC The Battersea shield is one of the finest examples of La Tène, or Celtic art, from Britain. It was deposited in the river perhaps as an offering to the Gods. The shield is decorated with three raised circular panels. The decoration is enhanced with inlayed red glass or enamel. The thin metal and short length of the shield would not have provided adequate protection in battle. Instead the shield was probably made for flamboyant display. It is made of several bronze sheets and a binding strip, held together with bronze rivets. Originally these bronze sheets would have formed the facing for a wooden base, which no longer survives. #shield #englishhistory #england #celticart #celticarchaeology

Bog bodies and contemporary research on them Bog bodies are especially preserved human remains found in peat bogs. The special biological conditions in peatlands, resulting from the long-term predominance of rainfall over water evaporation, often found in northern Europe, contribute to the exceptional preservation of the remains of organisms, including human remains, usually found by chance. Due to the acidic conditions of the soil, human skin, internal organs, as well as hair and nails are mummified. However, these acids do not always have a positive effect on bone preservation, which makes the found bodies often resemble skin bags. Individual cases of mummified human remains found in peat bogs date back widely between the Mesolithic (Koelbjerg Man ,Denmark - 8,000 BC, preserved skeleton) and the Second World War. Nowadays, researchers in the field of archeology and criminology are able to extract from specific remains many details about the life of a given person, the conditions and period in which they lived and the circumstances of their death. . Mostly I draw and paint, but to brush up on my animation and editing skills, I've recently found fun in creating short videos. So here is an animated version of the graphic reconstructions of the "Celtic Prince of Glauberg" - 2014 for the museum @keltenweltamglauberg - and some of the finds from the prince's grave. music: MGMT - Little Dark Age (Medieval Style #bardcore) by Constantine Bard #keltenweltglauberg #kelten #keltenfürst #ancienthistory #eisenzeit #ironage #etàdelferro #vorgeschichte #archäologischeillustrationen #illustrazionearcheologica #archaeologicalillustration #archaeoart #archaeologymuseum #archäologie #archaeologicaldrawing #archaeologylovers #archaeologylove #ancientworlds #archaeoinstagram #archaeoinsta #archeologia #celticarchaeology #archaea_illustration_studio

The drawn reconstructions of the "Celtic Prince of the Glauberg" that I made in 2014 for the museum "Keltenwelt am Glauberg". Here in comparison with the statue found in 1996 in the largest burial mound of the Glauberg, which provides valuable clues to the clothing, hair and beard style and appearance of the "prince" - a man between 21 and 29 years of age, about 169 cm tall and of robust build. Remarkable is the so-called „leaf crown“ - headdress, which could represent a mistletoe leaf and thus also connect the warrior with a religious or priestly context. . . #keltenweltglauberg #keltenlandhessen #kelten #keltenfürst #ancienthistory #eisenzeit #ironage #etadelferro #etàdelferro #latene #latène #archäologie #archäologischeillustrationen #illustrazionearcheologica #archaeologicalillustration #archaeologymuseum #archaeologicaldrawing #archaeologylovers #wetterau #tourismusregionwetterau #ancientworlds #archaeoinstagram #archeologia #celticarchaeology #archaea_illustration_studio

I am very glad I kept the Roman baths for last, I wasn't expecting to LOVE it so much! One of the best archeological sites and museums I have visited so far! Everything was well explained, made me curious, and was the right amount of knowledge to learn and not overwhelm visitors. #romanhistory #romanempire #roman #romanbaths #thermae #thermaebathspa #bath #bathuk #bathbaths #archaeology #romanarchaeology #celtics #celts #celtic #celticarchaeology #romanarchitecture #celtroman #britain #britainhistory

Another day, another standing stone though this is unmarked on the map (OS 160 @ SN9636). Impressive size and ground disturbance all around showing human activity or settlement or rites at some point. Great views over the Beacons and the military ranges 🙂 Intriguing.... #llanfihangelnantbran #standingstones #merthyrcynog #celticarchaeology #wales❤️

Above the village to the NE is Cefn Bola-maen with a trig and the solitary bronze age standing stone Maen Richard. Not as high as it once was, made of volcanic agglomerate, it stands at the meeting of three paths 🙏 #maenrichard #cefnbolamaen #standingstones #wales #bronzeage #powys #celticarchaeology

In the Celtic Myths, Miranda Aldhouse-Green attempts to situate the Welsh and Irish myths within the available history and archaeology. I loved how she finds archaeological artefacts to support elements of the myths. For example Oak trees were sacred to the Druids. The etymology of the word Druid or Druwydd may mean “wisdom of the Oak". In winter Oak trees are hosts to mistletoe – bright green balls with white berries symbolic of the moon (I was lucky enough to get some for this photo). In a famous account by chronicler Pliny the Elder in the 1st century he observed Gaulish Druids gathering mistletoe from Oak trees in winter, in a mysterious ceremony involving the sacrifice of two white bulls. In 1984 a body was found in a bog in Lindow Moss, Cheshire, England. His body dates to the 1st century. He suffered blows to the head and his throat had been cut while being garrotted. It may be that he was scarified, and suffered a “triple death". When examining the contents of the man’s stomach researchers found mistletoe. Perhaps the consumption of mistletoe was forced prior to sacrifice. Miranda Aldhouse-Green draws out other key elements featured in the myths for example the number 3 and shows how this was important to the Celtic people through symbolism used in artefacts like three sided stone faces and three forms to the one Goddess. She also explains how the myths came to be recorded from an initial oral tradition to be written down by monks in medieval times. This is part of a mythology series by Thames and Hudson, that is really well done. Each book is written by an academic and beautifully presented with illustrations and photos. If you are already familiar with the Celtic myths I’d highly recommend this book. I certainly found it useful in writing my book A Painted Winter, which features Druids and mistletoe and comes out tomorrow for the Winter Solstice! My beautiful Maeshowe and Newgrange candles are by @ashwoodcandles and are perfect for watching the livestream of the Winter Solstice (see my story). ❄ ❄ ❄ #celticart #celticmyths #celticarchaeology #celticmythology #irishmyths #welshmyths #wintersolstice #apaintedwinter #pictishconspiracyseries

❗️ASPETTA! . . . #irlanda #ireland #gallarusoratory #celtic #celts #croceceltica #celticcross #northerneurope #travel #viaggiare #guidaturistica #ilovemyjob #archaeology #archeologia #celticarchaeology #archeologiaceltica #celticart #tourguide #irishpassionbnw @guidescanner

🐗A hét műtárgya - A BÁTAI VADKAN Késő vaskor, La Tène-kultúra (Kr.e. 2. sz.?) Báta, szórvány Öntött bronz H.: 10,9 cm MNM Budapest, 88.1893.25. Forrás: 📸 kép: Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum @magyarnemzetimuzeum 📖adatok: Vágó Ádám: a Kárpát-medence ősi kincsei - A kőkortól a honfoglalásig ⚔️A Kr. e. 4. században a mai Magyarország egész területét a kelták hódították meg. Fejlett vasművességükről, ötvösművészetükről a Bátán előkerült bronz vadkanszobrocska is tanúskodik. A kelta sírokba a korai időktől kezdve némelykor háziasított sertések darabjait, sőt néha teljes állatot tettek. 📚 Olvasnivaló: 👉Szabó Miklós: A keleti kelták - A késő vaskor a Kárpát - medencében.
