Newgrange is one of the most remarkable prehistoric sites in Europe, famous for the illumination of its passage and tomb during the winter solstice sun. The site is so ancient (constructed about 5200 years ago) that it predates Egypt's pyramids by some six centuries. #newgrange #archaeology #Ireland #Éire

The assembly of passage tombs of Knowth, Newgrange, and Dowth, and 40 satellite grave mounds at Brú na Bóinne are Europe’s largest and most important concentration of prehistoric megalithic art. Carvings of spirals, waves, circles, and lozenges on stones weighing several tons decorate the exterior of the mounds and the interiors of the passage tombs. The tombs, erected around 3200 BCE, predate Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. #BrunaBoinne #Knowth #Newgrange #Megalithic #Megalith #Prehistoric #UNESCO #UNESCOWorldHeritage #Tomb #PassageTomb #Ireland #InstaIreland #FailteIreland #InstaTravel

In the era when the great megalithic stone circle of Stonehenge in England was constructed, Newgrange would already have been somewhat dilapidated. However, the great sense of aura and mystic concerning Newgrange continued to hang over the site like a shroud, and as the decades turned into millennia, the legends and myths began to increase. There are few early books or annals in which some mention cannot be found of Brú na Bóinne, the abode or palace of the Boyne. It plays a significant role in the mythology of early Ireland and the corpus of legends, poems, dindsbenchas (place lore) accounts, and so on, in which it is mentioned. The entire passage at Bru na Boinne was associated with the Tuatha Dé Dannan, the race of the goddess Danu. They were believed to have ruled Ireland with supernatural powers prior to the arrival of the Celts, and afterwards to have concealed themselves in the mounds and forts across the land of Éire. The Boyne was particularly associated with Dagda and his wife Boann, the goddess of the River Boyne. Newgrange was seen as the dwelling place of Dagda’s son, Oengus, the youthful hero and god of love. Dagda is said to have built Newgrange for his three sons Oengus, Aed and Cermaid. However, Oengus tricked his father by asking him for possession of it for a day and a night. His request being granted, Oengus then refused to hand it back, arguing that a day and a night meant forever. 𖦹 Heavy silver Newgrange entrance stone pendant on 18 inch sterling silver chain 𖦹 The entrance stone at Newgrange is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Neolithic art. Dating over 5,000 years, the megalithic spiral engravings of the entrance kerbstone are faithfully depicted on this heavy, silver pendant. @aerlingus @emerald.airlines ATR 72 EI-GPP 🇮🇪 "Íde/St. Ita" took us over Newgrange at around FL110 on the way up to Donegal. "Ita, called the "Brigid of Munster", was born in 480 in the present County Waterford. An account of her life in the Codex Kilkenniensis, follows the example of Brigit in describing the opposition Íte meets in pursuit of her vocation. Genealogies of the saints go so far as to make Íte's mother, Necht, a daughter of Dallbrónach, and therefore a sister of Brigit's mother. Ita was said to embody the six virtues of Irish womanhood – wisdom, purity, beauty, musical ability, gentle speech and needle skills. She is also reported to have rejected a prestigious marriage for a life as a consecrated woman religious." Bealtaine, Fairies, and The Pleiades. In a previous post I wrote about the connection between our concepts of the similar patterns which appear throughout the universe, including microscopic organisms, and entire galaxies and constellations. When it comes to star constellations and Bealtaine, you might be surprised at how strong the links are between the two. In fact, within some ancient traditions it is not the date of May 1st which determines the date of Bealtaine at all. (Bear in mind that the time we know as Bealtaine was observed long before this title was given to it.) Instead, this would be determined by the position of the Pleiades in conjunction with the sun. The Pleiades were frequently called The Stróilin here in Ireland and people often timed their journeys by the position of these stars. “The Pleiades are frequently known as The Stróilín, and neighbours, when visiting, or on a Céilidhe, time their departure by the position of this constellation. If the Pleiades are setting they will say “It is late, The Stróilin is going down!” FULL POST ON FACEBOOK. Meath was a kingdom for the first twelve centuries CE and is home to many high crosses, neolithic monuments and world renowned passage tombs. Still to this day it’s called the Royal County, a nod to the times when the High Kings of Ireland came to the Hill of Tara to be crowned in elaborate ceremonies. It’s thought that Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival we now call Halloween, originated here. Ireland’s largest Anglo-Norman castle is here. And, if that’s not impressive enough, the ancient Irish Olympic type games took place here for 3000 years where young warriors threw themselves into all manner of physical competitions. All in all it’s one pretty cool place. #meath #newgrange #tara #ireland🍀 #trimcastle #loveireland #discoverireland

The Approach of Bealtaine. As we move towards Bealtaine, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the fairy encounters and folklore associated with this time of the year. And, not just in Ireland, but throughout the whole Northern Hemisphere. As you will see, there are many parallels throughout various cultures and belief systems. Let’s start with the common traditions, then, before focusing on Ireland in later posts. Bealtaine, usually thought to mean ‘Bright Fire’ or, less used now, ‘Bel’s fire’, is an ancient Celtic festival but the roots of celebrating this day are much older and more widespread than the Celtic celebration itself. Bealtaine/ Beltane’s traditional date of May 1st represents the midway point between the vernal equinox and summer solstice. However, because of the gradual change in the earth’s axis of rotation the actual astronomical cross-quarter this year is May 4th and May 5th here in the Northern Hemisphere. FULL POST ON FACEBOOK. 😏😏 ¡Y no! Celtic Knotwork Bracelet With Lobster Clasp This beautiful bracelet showcases 8 links of the classic knotwork pattern, which is commonly seen in various forms of art like the Book of Kells. It is adorned with 8 diamond-shaped Celtic knot links. This is a delicate looking bracelet but I use heavy soldered jump rings to connect the links which also function as part of the overall design. The bracelet is secured with a lobster clasp for added safety. This is truly a very pretty piece of jewellery which can work for anyday wear or for a special occasion. #celticknotwork #celticjewellery #irishcraft #buyirish #newgrange #boynevalley #newgrange

These fabulous drop earrings, included in my ‘celtic knot’ collection, are made up of a hand-carved celtic knot fastened to an ear wire. Three different-length snake chains are linked by jump rings beneath the knot. These earrings are my personal favourite! You wouldn’t believe the design is based on such an ancient artwork due to the lovely modern twist. The knotwork is carved in the traditional craft of wax carving to produce a work of art that is not possible with conventional sheet metal jewellery. The entire earring is .925 sterling silver. #lostwaxcasting #celticknot #celticknotwork #newgrange #irishcreatives #irishcraft #irishdesign #artistsofireland #wintersolstice #solstice

Uncover ancient history in the Megalithic Passage Tomb of Newgrange, Co. Meath! Located about an hour from Dublin in the Boyne River Valley, also known as the Brú na Bóinne area. Built around 3200BC, did you know it’s older than the Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza? ✨ Brú na Bróinne means “place of the Boyne” and it was named because it’s the part of the Boyne River where ancient people of Ireland built these incredible structures. It was a sacred place. ☀️ Newgrange was built to let the light in lot the chamber at sunrise during the winter solstice and the entire tomb lights up. All access for this event is decided by a lottery and people gather inside the tomb every year for this incredible event. 💛 When I visited Newgrange some years ago I remember being amazed to see this ancient piece of history in person and wondering who built it. It’s definitely worth a visit on your Irish adventure!

Triple Spiral or Triskele The ancient origins of Ireland's iconic Triple Spiral (Triskele) Dates back to approximately 3200BC at Newgrange, ( See Special Note Below: on Newgrange) this symbol predates the arrival of the Celts in Ireland. The Triskele appears frequently as jewelry, decor pieces, art work and design pieces from ancient to modern times. While its exact meaning to the Celts remains a mystery due to the oral transmission of their traditions, one theory suggests it represented union, creation, and rebirth. Newgrange, where the first Triple Spirals were found, holds a fascinating hidden significance in that it is aligned with the position of the Winter Solstice, December 21, the site welcomes the first light of the rising sun through a unique opening, illuminating intricate carvings on its walls, including the prominent Triple Spiral. As Christianity spread across Ireland, the Triple Spiral, or triskele, gained new significance as a symbol of the Christian Holy Trinity: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. With such ancient roots and diverse interpretations, the Triple Spiral has become a unifying symbol for Ireland, resonating with people across different cultures and beliefs. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Till next time Saveta Maria Young 🧡 Kindly, share this post 🧡 #irish #newgrange #iteland #symbolism #celts #history #union #wintersolstice #rebirth #triplespiral #triskele #creation Special Note: Newgrange is a Stone Age (Neolithic) monument in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, it is the jewel in the crown of Ireland's Ancient East. Newgrange was constructed about 5,200 years ago (3,200 B.C.) which makes it older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. The mound is ringed by 97 large kerbstones, some of which are engraved with symbols called megalithic art. the mound is 85m (279ft) in diameter and 13m (43ft) high, an area of about 1 acre. A passage measuring 19m (62ft) leads into a chamber with 3 alcoves. The passage and chamber are aligned with the rising sun on the mornings around the Winter Solstice.

Newgrange is a prehistoric monument located in County Meath, Ireland. It is part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other nearby monuments like Knowth and Dowth. Newgrange is a passage tomb constructed during the Neolithic period, around 3200 BCE, making it older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. The monument consists of a large circular mound with a stone passageway and chambers inside. The mound is surrounded by kerbstones, many of which are decorated with intricate megalithic art, including spirals, zigzags, and other geometric patterns. One of the most notable features of Newgrange is its carefully aligned entrance passage, which allows sunlight to penetrate the chamber during the winter solstice. This alignment suggests that the site had astronomical significance to its builders. Newgrange is a significant archaeological site and provides valuable insights into the rituals, beliefs, and technological capabilities of the Neolithic people of Ireland. It continues to attract visitors from around the world who are fascinated by its ancient mysteries and impressive construction. Celtic Ireland has the Newgrange monument, a large burial tomb. 3200 BC, older than the Pyramids. It has spiral Triskele graphic motifs carved into stone around it. This could be the key to Druidism the religion of the Celtic civilization. #Newgrange #Ireland #Druidism #Religion

𖦹 The Gods and Goddesses of the Tuatha Dé Danann 𖦹 The Dagda, ‘The Good God’ was the chief of the Tuatha Dé Danann and a prominent figure in Irish mythology. A god of fertility, agriculture, and wisdom, and was known for his extraordinary powers. Among his many magical possessions were a cauldron of abundance, a staff capable of killing or resurrecting, and a harp that could control the seasons. Manannán mac Lir ‘Son of the Sea’, is a warrior and king of the Otherworld in Irish mythology who is associated with the sea, Tír na nÓg ‘Land of the Young’ and other realms such as Emain Ablach. Manannán had many magical possessions. His white horse, called Énbarr or Aonbharr, could travel over land and sea, or by passing through mists. He uses the mist of invisibility ‘féth fíada’ to cloak the whereabouts of his home as well as the sidhe. Lugh, also known as ‘Lugh of the Long Arm’, was a god of many talents including arts, crafts, and warfare. He was the son of Cian, a member of the Tuatha, and Ethniu, a daughter of the Formorian leader Balor. Lugh played a crucial role in the Second Battle of Magh Tuireadh, where he led the Tuatha Dé Danann to victory over the oppressive Formorians. His expertise in various skills earned him the title ‘Samildánach’ or ‘Master of All Arts’. Brigid, was a goddess of healing, poetry, and smithcraft. She was the daughter of the Dagda and was revered for her wisdom and creativity Brigid was often associated with sacred wells and springs, which were believed to have healing properties. Often depicted as a trio of sisters – Badb, Macha, and Nemain – the Morrigan held significant influence over the outcome of battles and the fate of warriors. She’s also associated with shape-shifting, prophecy, and sovereignty. Others include Aengus or ‘Óengus’, a god associated with youth, love, summer and poetic inspiration . Nuada Airgeadlámh, ‘Silver Hand’ was the first king of the Tuatha & associated with hunting. Dian Cécht was the god of healing, Ogma a god & father of Ogham, and Goibniu was a metal smithing god & is associated with furnishing feasts for the gods.

The Dowth Stone in the Boyne Valley was my reference/inspiration point for the Cloch Ár Sinsear painting from last year. This stone is inside the perimeter fence at Newgrange, although it's not original to the site it was brought there in the 1960's for safe keeping. Its a kerbstone of a now long destroyed but very large passage tomb which originally stood near Dowth. #ancestors #ancientireland #neolitic #newgrange #passagetomb #éire #fuilarsaart #irishartist

Who is excited to watch the total solar eclipse tomorrow? ☀️🌝 ***NOTE - it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing**** Pardon the cheesy song, but I just had to! Here is one of my pieces inspired by the solar eclipse. You may know that many cultures thought the solar eclipse was a bad omen, and myths told of the sun being devoured by celestial monsters. In ancient Ireland, solar eclipses were looked upon favorably, and it is believed that the “Festival of Light” was created to welcome and celebrate the eclipse. This may even indicate that our ancient astronomers predicted the eclipse. The carvings on Cairn L at Loughcrew, Co. Meath, are thought to be the earliest record of a solar eclipse in the world. This carving dates back to over 5,000 years ago. I find this fascinating. Check out the second photo to take a look. 📷@newgrangeandknowthopw Unfortunately, it may be a little overcast in CT tomorrow, but if you want to check it out, I have put the link to NASA’s live stream in my story. The total eclipse phase will only last 4 minutes and 28 seconds. *****Alert - it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.***** Enjoy this piece of history! #solareclipse #solareclipse2024 #celticireland #celticart #celticartist #dublinartist #newgrange #stoneage

𖦹 Irish Mythology 𖦹 Irish mythology is divided into four major cycles: the Mythological Cycle, the Ulster Cycle, the Fenian Cycle, and the King’s (Historical) Cycle. Each cycle delves into the sagas, myths and legends that explore different aspects of ancient Irish history. The Mythological Cycle specifically explores the origins of Ireland and its people, focusing on the divine and supernatural beings who inhabited the land before the arrival of human settlers. This cycle provides a rich tapestry of gods, heroes, and magical creatures, whose stories have shaped the core of Irish mythology. The Tuatha Dé Danann were descendants of the goddess Danu, a primordial figure associated with fertility, wisdom and the land, and they were said to possess extraordinary powers, including the ability to control the weather, shape-shift, and perform incredible feats of magic. They arrived in Ireland after spending time in the northern islands of the world, where they learnt their extraordinary arts. Their arrival is described in the Lebor Gabála Érenn, or the ‘Book of Invasions’, which ancient text recounts how the Tuatha Dé Danann came to Ireland on dark clouds, eventually settling on the island and driving out the previous inhabitants, the Fir Bolg, in the Battle of Magh Tuireadh, a legendary conflict between the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Fir Bolg. Although the Fir Bolg fought bravely, they were eventually defeated by the superior magical powers of the Tuatha Dé Danann. The surviving Fir Bolg were allowed to retreat to the western parts of the island, while the Tuatha Dé Danann established their rule over the rest of Ireland. The mythological cycle is the most ancient, so it is the least preserved. Many of its stories can be found in Metrical Dindshenchas or ‘Lore of Places’ and the Lebor Gabála Érenn. It tells stories of gods and supernatural events, & the history of Ireland, the successful settlements of the early Celtic godlike people in Ireland, Tuatha Dé Danann, the Fir Bolg and the Milesians, and of other popular sagas such as The Children of Lir, The Wooing Of Étain, The Settling of the Manor of Tara, The Taking of the Sidhe, and The Dream of Aengus 𖦹
