Year 2 of our project at @simurghcentre in Khirkee explored the intersection between the self and the world through a doll-making workshop with @gudgudgudiya that led to the creation of dolls as self-portraits. These were made of all kinds of material- paper cups, ice-cream sticks, cloth scraps, wool, plasticine… The dolls then became protagonists in mini-stories set in the neighbourhood. The dolls were then taken to the different locations the neighbourhood and photographed to create mini photo stories. These are now being shared on the Simurgh Centre handle and we are delighted to re-share one of them. A six-year-old #daughter of an entrepreneur who recently #travelled on #Etihad Airways' #business class gave the #airline a 1/10 rating. The daughter provided #feedback on her #flight experience, including the lack of school friends, poor kids' meals, and the lack of hot towel #service. The airline also didn't start IFE on Etihad until airborne, which was not the case on Etihad. Goal 1, Initiative 3 of our 2023-28 Strategic Plan states, “establish a wide range of learning opportunities for students to gain strength of voice and amplify the voice of others.” Recently, an increased interest in superhero and power dynamic play has developed among some of our ECE children. To navigate this imaginative play towards a positive direction for all individuals we began the conversation asking the question, "What do superheroes do?" Responses flowed from children- they use their power, are kind, help people, and fight bad guys. After defining the role of a superhero, it was important to define what kind of words and language do superheroes use- what are safe words and what are unsafe words? Teachers shared their observations of positive play and some not so friendly play. Together, the children voiced their feelings, thoughts, and opinions of powerful “safe” words and phrases to use in play and others that are considered “unsafe” causing hurt feelings or fear. Last week at our Stafford Road setting in our Hedgehogs room the children were able to vote on whether they wanted to go outside and explore the rain 🌧️. The four toddlers who voted that they wanted to go outside, put on their wetsuits and wellies and went outside to explore. We used transparent umbrellas ☔️ for the children to be able to look at the rain without it going into their eyes. They also stood quietly and listened to the noise of the rain. Supporting children’s emotional well-being in their early years is crucial for their development into mentally strong adults. As educators, we aim to help children develop emotional intelligence and become aware young individuals. In our beautiful room, we create a calm atmosphere using low-level lighting and slow, relaxing music. 🎶 We have a dedicated area next to the Family Wall where children can sit, reset, and rest with the support of an adult. Additionally, we provide sensory toys that allow children to express their emotions through squeezing and watching bubbles. This aligns with our ethos of being present in the moment and being aware of what helps us feel calm. 💡 When it comes to teaching children to be assertive yet sensitive, talking and modelling are key. We guide the children through conflicts, suggesting how they can express themselves. Modelling is another effective method to demonstrate perseverance and resilience. 💪 By sharing our own experiences, we show the children that we don’t give up when faced with challenges, finding alternative solutions and being proud of our accomplishments. Validating children’s feelings is incredibly important as it makes them feel acknowledged and heard. 😊 The theme for Children’s Mental Health Week is “My Voice Matters,” which is something we emphasize at the nursery. We consult with the children when planning new areas and activities, value their input, and involve them in decision-making processes.
