With a steady rise in the number of mental health crisis, only 1 out of 6 kids will get the right treatment in Ontario. With the medical system understaffed, lack of services, and a shortage of youth specialists in the system - it leads to the lack of early intervention that is needed with the age group. Families at times end up waiting lists 9 months to get access to care. There is also huge access problem for youth especially in Indigenous populations who are 5 times more likely to die by suicide. Another fun morning atย @baytreecentre โ๏ธ Today was our third Parents in Playmode workshop, with 9 mothers attending. @mikaela_livadiotis taught us new rhythms, and we practised clapping 2 patterns at the same time. Half of the group was clapping in 3/4 and the other half in 4/4! Then,ย @yanaelledanseย led a zumba warm up, combinations of cumbia and salsa steps, stretches, and a short relaxation. I love using a real life doctorโs kit in my play therapy room and is always a very popular choice of play with the children! ๐ฉโโ๏ธ Thereโs so many benefits to having a real life doctorโs kit available as it gives children the opportunity to play out life experiences and explore their feelings accordingly. Having plasters available are essential as they truly are a magical healing tool! We all remember feeling much better after receiving a plaster for a little cut or bump that may not necessarily have โ neededโ a plaster, right? Well really it was knowing that someone was connecting with us in the moment, acknowledging our feelings and affirming we were safe that helped us to feel better! ๐ In Play Therapy children can use the plasters to symbolise acknowledging wounds, finding strength and working towards healing. They may use plasters on the therapist or dolls exploring themes of nurture, symbolising repair, develop empathy, attune to others feelings and it also gives the therapist the opportunity to model appropriate responses to recieving medical care. A collection of children wrote stories for children to support children having a difficult time! ๐๐ฒ๐ผ ๐ฑ๐ช๐น๐น๐ ๐น๐ต๐ช๐ฌ๐ฎโฆ๐๐ This weekend we had a night away at the seaside, we had an amazing time. The beach has always been a happy place for Rory. Itโs a distraction away from life and a place he truly is himself, I love watching him look so relaxed and happy as he jumps the waves, transports water and digs until his heart is content. Heโs really needed this after the past few weeks of being so up and down worrying what the future holds as we still have no school placement for September. Itโs such a big change for him this year as he leaves junior school and he wonโt be continuing school life his friends who have supported him so much over the past few years โฅ๏ธ. Hopefully we will have some clarity soon but at this point Iโm not holding my breath. But I will still be his voice and I will continue to fight for what he deserves! ๐ช

Denial or avoidance only exacerbates the problem, hindering early intervention and support. ๐ง Increase awareness in signs and symptoms. Educating people about the symptoms and warning signs of mental health disorders empowers them to recognize when a child might be struggling.
