Meet Tim Ritchie, the author of the current text on Village Voices. Tim moved to the city in the late 1970s after already starting a radio career at Double J, working mid-dawn while studying economics. He stayed at Triple J until 1990, then ABC Radio National, retiring in 2017. He started photography and film when he left home, but the costs made him shift to radio and music. Tim returned to taking photos a little more than 10 years ago, cycling about town capturing unique urban images as the city awakes. Over a century old, the White Bay Power station stood empty after being decommissioned in 1984. It is now open to the public for the first time. It is currently being used as a venue to display art for the Biennale of Sydney - including the art-after-dark events. The venue has amazing light with windows several stories high, lots of scaffolding electric machinery from a bygone era still remaining; giving it an edgy, gritty, industrial charm - one can see why it was chosen to film parts of, "Matrix Reloaded" and the 'Valley of the Grey Ashes' in the Great Gatsby. It feels as if the power station is slowly waking up from a long slumber and it will be interesting to see both how the space will be transformed in the future and how its heritage is conserved.
