The Ostwald Colour Album Published by Windsor Newton, 1928. Windsor Newton had published a series of Ostwald's colours at that stage and there are still many survivors in good condition. We’re so happy that artist Caroline Popham is returning for our 20 year anniversary show with two incredibly beautiful paintings. Hanging side by side they both appear to flow into each other - here’s a glimpse of one to whet your appetite. Caroline Popham Frost Kissed Horizon, 2024 Acrylic on canvas 150 x 120 cm These paintings are a continuation of Caroline’s paper cuts and collage work and she has such an intuitive sense of colours and forms working together. Her studio is full of sketchbooks where her ideas start and evolve and she’s had a long held love of colour charts which inspire her. Her love of colour and abstraction comes through as she seeks to achieve a sense of calm and serenity in her work. Caroline says about this work Starting life as a small cut paper collage ‘it suggested a landscape, but one thinks of a landscape as a static moment in time. The abstraction of the shapes and the texture suggested movement and velocity to me, as though it were the journey as well as the space that was being represented. This is something I've never done before. Was it worth it? Yes. I've put them in groups according to the maker. Every maker has a subtly different version of a colour. I found colours that I love that I'd completely no idea that I had eg New Gamboge. Now it remains to be seen if these pages come in useful or not. My Carrageen sketchbook page. 😉 I did these small studies as prepwork for a project that I was working on that will be revealed later this year. The colour chart on the lower left hand side was made after I had finished the studies, and showed me exactly what paints I would need, and which order to use them. They read from top to bottom. The squares are the paints on my palette and the circles are mixes. For me, creating a study page and working out my palette is a part of my process, and I really enjoy creating spreads like this. I work with a large range of pigments (I just can’t do a limited palette), but creating a colour chart like this helps me understand what I am doing, so I don’t end up with inconsistent mixes. And yes, I use opaques and transparents. They both work, and to be honest, it’s how you use them that matters. 🌈🎨😜

𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝘼𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙩: Just made it for World Book Day and delighted to introduce this fabulous book Colour Charts - A History - by Anne Varichon (Princeton Press). I always snap up any vintage colour charts when I am out and love old paint ones by artists, ribbon colour charts, silks and cotton colour charts etc - so this book was a must for my library of reference books. “Colour Charts describes the many different methods and ingenious devices developed since the c15th by doctors, naturalists, dyers, and painters to catalog fragments of colours”. And wow there are some stunning examples in this book - in fact nearly 200 examples almost all of them previously unpublished. I wish I owned some of these - swoon. Fabulous book for anyone interested in colour or collecting colour/textile/haberdashery charts. And if you are out and about and spot a gorgeous example- I am your girl! Edit - sorry had chosen 10 lovely pages but ‘these bugs!!’ when posting carousel posts don’t show until it has been posted. It’s such a joy to see the first snowdrops emerging at last! They bring with them the promise of brighter days even though it is still so cold outside. Snowdrops make great painting subjects too. I prefer to paint the petals in soft nuances of colour- delicate mixes of Manganese Hue, Permanent Rose and Winsor Yellow. These washes also make up the first layers of paint in both stems and leaves. Even the bulb starts with pale blues and violets! You can see all the mixes that I used in the colour charts on the study page. The colour charts read from top to bottom in order of how the paint layers are applied. Squares are the paints on the palette (not mixed) and the circles are the mixes. Very often I don’t mix colours on my palette, but use colour layering on the page (e.g. yellow over blue to get the right green). I guess these are ‘colour recipes’ rather than typical colour charts as I always make these at the end, once I have figured out what I am doing!

I painted this based on a smaller, slightly similar one, which was called Rampage. I’m trying to pull up works for an exhibition themed with colors, so I think this one will be called Rampage Red.
