Andean Lodges is a pioneer in eco-adventures in the Cusco region of Peru, with a commitment to environmental protection and community empowerment, in line with our vision of promoting a type of tourism that benefits local communities and the planet. The indigenous communities of Chillca and Osefina decided to improve their livelihoods by sharing their culture and traditional way of life, and were keen to get involved in tourism and trekking experiences. This was the spark that started Andean Lodges, a hiking experience between four tambo-type lodges, where llamas and alpacas from nearby communities serve as โporters,โ and where the Chillca and Osefina people welcome visitors and show their knowledge of these lands. Local people of these highlands are guardians of some of the last llama and alpaca herding cultures in the Cusco region. Therefore, their paths not only follow the impressive Ausangate route, among pristine ecosystems, but are also connected with ancestral traditions and local indigenous knowledge. โ๏ธ The final days of our recent trip to Mataven included paddling through the Mataven channel, one of the largest indigenous reservations in Colombia ๐จ๐ด and a paradise in the Orinoquia region ๐๐ณ. The group also climbed Cerro Mataven ๐ชจ, admiring the petroglyphs, stunning biodiversity and unparalleled landscapes ๐of one of the spectacular tepuis that guard the entrance to the Mataven channel ๐ฏ . Finally, there was a session to learn about the processing of Yuca and the preparation ๐ดof casabe with our Piaroas friends from the La Urbana community deep in the Mataven jungle. What an exciting week we have had here in Shetland! โ๏ธ On Saturday morning Shetland woke up to a bang when a meteor entered the earthโs atmosphere above the south mainland of Shetland. Sadly itโs expected that any meteorites will have fallen into the sea to the north west of the islands. However, it reminded us of a Wild Skies Shetland event held in August 2022 - a giant meteorite treasure hunt all over Unst with the opportunity to win a real meteorite โ๏ธ Wild Skies Shetland had also invited meteorite scientists from France and Belgium and a meteorite hunter from the UK to give talks at the Baltasound Junior High School, Uyeasound Hall and Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick too. Comuna 13/San Javier in Medellin, Colombia was once one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods/favelas in the world. It was prime land for international drug trafficking. The favela was riddled with violence due to the drug wars, paramilitaries and controversial military operations which resulted in loss of lives at a large scale. Nowadays, the area has been gentrified. They run community led tours to share information on the history of the neighbourhood. A lot has been invested into education and rebuilding of the community. It has a fancy escalator to allow easier navigation to the top of the favela. It is a centre of creativity with evidence of various projects such as street performances, graffiti, music projects, amongst others that are visible as you explore the area. They even have their own brewery. This is not to say evidence of the pain of the loss of lives in the area is not visible nor that there is no crime at all in the area. However, the fact that we were there is testament to the improvements. After the tour, I ventured out with a couple of new friends to a local bar. It was such a vibe with the dj playing banger after banger we didnโt realise how quick time flew and had to navigate the alley ways and direct ourselves back to the train station in the dark. No infractions. It was a very enjoyable and enlightening experience for everyone involved ๐ฏ- and thankfully there were no injuries either!
