😭🦠 🥱 CONTAGION 🤣 🤢 😷 Perhaps (undoubtedly) the last year has brought thoughts about the contagious nature of things... I don’t need to name the infectious thoughts, actions or disease at play. But like a newly discovered (or rediscovered) song that seems to pop up with improbable frequency after your first encounter with it, can you also populate your daily life with increased occurrence of happy contagion? Rounding on two weeks of intentional, personal cultivation of creativity in my approach to work and life—because I re-remembered that I had forgotten just how whole and grounded operating in this mindset makes me—small incidents of creative joy seem follow me. Nightly, for nearly a year, dear husband has been leaving a single gummy bear at each boy’s breakfast spot, earning him a new and ludicrous if you know him title of “Gummy Bear Fairy.” It didn’t take long for the boys to determine that the GBF was likely their father, who more than makes up for his lack of sweet tooth in exclusive gummy candy consumption. This tiny, but regular exchange became a sort of anchor for our foggy, monotonous 2020 mornings (and one gummy bear per day won’t rot their teeth ?! I’ve reminded myself now more than 300 times) But as today began like every other—desperate coffee making attempts thwarted no less than 12 times by toddler needs (wants)—the compulsory gummy bear greeting sounded altogether different. Silence>>Confusion>>Recognition>>Appreciation>>hysterical laughter The bears were not merely sat upon the table, which was their established routine, but plucked from their saccharine world into another entirely. Not merely there, but caught in the act of play. Whether the creative energy I am hell-bent on fostering has infected the rooms of my house, or perhaps just made me more receptive to everyday magic, I can’t say. But chicken or egg, I am here for it. ✨What sort of contagion will you start this week? We are all infecting those around us with something.

Why is it that everytime someone yawns nearby, I feel the instant urge to 🥱 myself? Well for this Weeks #whywednesday I discuss just why exactly yawns are so contagious. The likelihood of yawning increases 6 fold after watching someone else 🥱. This is a form of echophenomena, the automatic imitation of anothers words or actions. This occurs in most adults, but interestingly does not start occurring until you are about 4 yrs old. Those on the autism spectrum are also less likely to experience contagious yawning. The exact cause of echophenomena is unknown, but it is suspected to be linked to disinhibition of the human mirror neuron system and hyperexcitability of cortical motor areas in the brain.
